Troy Glaus is listed as day-to-day with a mild left ankle sprain.
If Glaus can't play Friday, either Scott Spiezio or Jose Nieves will start at third base.

Seattle's Ryan Franklin was not available Thursday because he has strep throat.
Franklin had been a candidate to start for the Mariners on Sunday, but this could change that.

ATLANTA - Left fielder Moises Alou was not in the Cubs' starting lineup for the second straight game, and it's anybody's guess if he'll start any of the remaining three games before the all-star break.

Alou strained his right calf Tuesday night in Florida. At the time, the Cubs thought he was merely suffering from a cramp, but the injury hasn't responded.

A strained right calf put Alou on the disabled list in early April. Since the beginning of spring training, he has suffered from at least a half-dozen minor injuries.

"It felt the same as yesterday, and I didn't play yesterday," Alou said. "Why take a chance?"

Alou has started to swing the bat better lately. He entered Thursday batting .248 with 6 homers and 23 RBI, but he was 9-for-20 on the road trip and 12-for-29 over his previous seven games.

"It's frustrating even if I (stink) not to be able to play," he said. "I want to play."

How frustrating has it been for Alou?

"I don't even read the papers," he said. "That's how frustrating it's been. I'm always in the top 10 in hitting, and I'm always checking the stats. I don't even know what's going on in baseball, who's leading the league in hits, RBIs."

Injury updates: Starting pitcher Jason Bere's injured right knee is healed. The Cubs will use his remaining time on the disabled list to get his groin healed.

Bere was hit by a line drive off the bat of Cincinnati's Sean Casey on June 26 and put on the DL the next day.

Left-handed reliever Donovan Osborne, who has been on the 60-day DL since May 13 because of a strained muscle in his right side, will head to Arizona next Monday to begin working out. After getting into shape at the Cubs' spring-training facility in Mesa, Osborne will head out on a minor-league rehab stint.

Manager Don Baylor says he doesn't expect Osborne back before the end of July.

Looks like the man: Mark Bellhorn extended his hitting streak to six games Thursday, matching his career best.

For now, the 28-year-old Bellhorn looks to have won the starting job, perhaps at least until Bobby Hill is ready to come back up from Class AAA Iowa.

"I'm not going to rest him," Don Baylor said. "He's made a lot more contact lately. He runs well. I can do some things with him at the bottom of the lineup. It seems like Billy Mueller has found that knack again hitting second. So I'll play Bellhorn. This is a good stretch for him. It's a good test for him, if he can do it on an everyday basis. It's perfect because he's a switch hitter."

NEW YORK (AP) - Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter left Thursday's game after he bruised his left lower leg and sprained his knee on a hard, takeout slide by Cleveland's John McDonald.

"I was scared to look because I didn't want to see if my leg was broken," Jeter said. "I was scared at first."

X-rays were negative and Jeter is day to day. He was to undergo an MRI exam on Friday to make sure there is no ligament damage to his knee. Manager Joe Torre said the five-time All-Star might miss a day or two.

The Twins are 19-9 against Tampa Bay, Detroit and Kansas City - the three worst teams in the AL - and exactly .500 against everybody else.

The Sox are still talking to the Marlins about a possible trade for outfielder Cliff Floyd, who presumably would serve primarily as a designated hitter. They have yet to offer a package that would entice the Marlins. Floyd is batting .294 with 18 homers, 56 RBIs, and an on-base percentage of .418... Sox pitchers combined for the best ERA (3.59) in the league through the first 81 games, but team officials have said they believe they need more pitching to improve their postseason chances. Little said the return of Dustin Hermanson(groin) could help and he cited the possibility of Casey Fossum returning from Triple A Pawtucket as a starter. But if the Sox can land another front-line pitcher, Little wouldn't beef. ''I like our pitching,'' he said. ''It's been doing such a good job for us all year long, but I guess there's always room for improvement. Any time we have a chance to make it better, I'm sure we will.'' Little said he also expects Rolando Arrojo to help in the second half. Arrojo, who went on the 15-day disabled list June 24 with tendinitis in his right shoulder, is home resting in St. Petersburg, Fla. He has not progressed beyond playing toss, and the club has no timetable for his possible return ... Little tapped Sun Woo Kim to start the finale of the 14-game homestand Sunday against Adam Bernero of the Tigers. He said he went with Kim over Tim Wakefield, who was 2-0 with a 2.13 ERA last year against Detroit, largely because he needs the knuckleballer in the bullpen but also because Kim pitched impressively in his last outing. ''He has earned the right to start again,'' Little said. Kim is 0-1 against the Tigers in his career with an 8.64 ERA.

Already a hit

Lefthander Alan Embree, who pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings, has not allowed a hit over 6 1/3 innings in seven appearances since he joined the Sox. He has retired 19 batters and allowed three walks. Embree has gone 24 2/3 innings over 26 relief appearances dating to his time in San Diego without allowing an earned run ... Nomar Garciaparra(2 for 4 with a double, two-run homer, and a sacrifice fly) matched a season high with four RBIs and extended his hitting streak to seven games ... The Sox are 19-0 when Johnny Damon scores two or more runs and are 36-6 when he scores at least one run ... Since Shea Hillenbrand(1 for 5 with a run scored) last drew a walk May 24, he has hit .253 and his average has dropped from .333 to .297. He has hit four homers and driven in 16 runs over the 37 games ... Manny Ramirez(0 for 3 with a run scored) has yet to muster an extra-base hit as he has batted .229 (8 for 35) since he returned from the disabled list. He said he has not been asked to participate in the home run derby during the All-Star festivities ... Lou Merloni said he aggravated a sore right ankle when he was upended by Vernon Wells while turning a double play in the second inning. After he went down hard again when Ken Huckaby took him out in the fourth inning, Merloni was replaced in the fifth by Bryant Nelson. An X-ray on Merloni's ankle was negative. He said his status was day to day

Injury update: Beltran DHs, Sweeney sits
By DICK KAEGEL
The Kansas City Star

OAKLAND, Calif. - Carlos Beltran was in, Mike Sweeney was out of the Royals' lineup on Thursday night.

Beltran, though, was moved from center field to be designated hitter against the Oakland Athletics. He suffered a split nail on his left big toe on Wednesday night in Seattle.

Can he run without difficulty?

"I don't know. I haven't run yet," Beltran said before batting practice. "But I'm DHing. We'll see."

Sweeney was hurt in the same game, sustaining a cut right ring finger. He had two stitches closing the wound on the underside of the finger.

So manager Tony Pena decided not to use his .362 hitter for just the second time this season.

"It's swollen," Sweeney said, "and Tony felt that with that and where the stitches were on the finger that it'd alter my swing."

Sweeney was struck by a pitch from Seattle right-hander Joel Pineiro on a high, tight 3-2 pitch.

A former catcher, Pena said he understood why Pineiro came up and in on a tough right-handed hitter like Sweeney.

"The kid says, `I don't want to give up. So I'll come inside and I don't want to hit him but I don't want to give up,' " Pena said.

Beltran's nail was split when, on a close play at first base, his foot slid under the back end of John Olerud's spikes. When Olerud caught the throw and stepped down on the bag, he stomped Beltran's foot.

Raul Ibanez replaced Sweeney at first base and Michael Tucker played center field. It was Ibanez's first start at first base this season.

Febles at second

Carlos Febles, after missing eight starts because of a strained upper left leg, was back in the lineup at second base, and hit a solo homer in the sixth inning.

Febles played in a reserve role in the previous two games. Luis Alicea replaced Febles in the leadoff spot and hit .257 (nine for 35) in the eight games.
