Anaheim closer situation for the weekend:

*****

Following Thursday's game, closer Troy Percival revealed that he is experiencing irritation in his right hip, the Orange County Register reported. Percival's claim came after giving up a grand slam to Orioles' second baseman Brian Roberts. "Troy had a little irritation in his hip," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "It obviously started to have an effect on his pitches...At the very least, we'll probably give him a day or two. Hopefully, it's not going to be an issue."

Scot Shields, Brendan Donnelly, Ben Weber, or Francisco Rodriguez will do it by committee....

The Cubs' longest road trip in 20 years will wind down with an important three-game set at Houston, starting tonight.
After a night game at Pittsburgh, followed by a flight that wasn't scheduled to arrive in Houston until the wee hours of the morning, the Cubs might be a bit on the tired side when they take on their NL Central rivals at Minute Maid Park tonight.

"That's tough," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said after the North Siders' 3-2 victory over the Pirates on Thursday night. "But it's better to go in there with a win than a loss. We will have a couple of fresh bodies we can run out there who didn't play (Thursday). That was by design."

Tonight's starting pitcher, Mark Prior, took a flight to Houston earlier in the day.

The Astros, entering Thursday's home game vs. St. Louis, had won nine of their previous 12 at Minute Maid Park.

Cirillo, Guillen exit early
LARRY LARUE; The News Tribune

By the sixth inning of their 30th victory of the season, the Seattle Mariners were playing without the left side of their infield Thursday.

Oh, there was a third baseman and a shortstop out there at Safeco Field - just not the players who'd started the game at those positions.

And Jeff Cirillo and Carlos Guillen might not play together this weekend.

Shortstop Guillen exited in the third inning after legging out an infield single and having his right hamstring cramp up.

"I felt it right out of the batter's box," Guillen said, "but I think I can play with it."

Manager Bob Melvin replaced Guillen with Mark McLemore as a "precaution," Melvin said - but the manager acknowledged the shortstop might not be in the lineup today.

Cirillo almost certainly won't be.

After a defensive play to end the top of the sixth inning, Cirillo came out with back spasms, a problem he's been fighting close to two weeks.

"It's just been a progression since the Yankees series, and it got worse last week in Cleveland," Cirillo said. "We had terrible beds in Cleveland, then a long rain delay one game.

"There's no pain. I'm fine. It just feels like a two-by-four is strapped to my back. There's no way I can play right now."

Melvin figures Cirillo may miss a few games, possibly the whole weekend series against the Twins.

If Guillen can't go, McLemore likely will start at shortstop. In Cirillo's place, Melvin could start left-handed hitting John Mabry or rookie Willie Bloomquist - or McLemore, if Guillen starts at shortstop.

"We have options," Melvin said, "and we'll just see how those guys feel when they get to the ballpark (tonight)."

Outfielder Mark Kotsay (back) will likely be placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. Kotsay has been battling back problems for over a month. The Padres are expected to call up top prospect Jason Bay, who will start in center. Bay has batted .300 with 10 home runs, 32 RBI, and 10 stolen bases at Triple-A Portland this season. First baseman Ryan Klesko (ankle) is questionable for Friday's game, and he may also find himself on the disabled list soon.

The bloated disabled list of the New York Mets was reduced slightly when outfielder Jeromy Burnitz was activated prior to Friday's game with the Atlanta Braves.

Burnitz has been on the DL since April 23, one day after he suffered a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal bone when he was hit on the left wrist by a fastball thrown by Houston's Billy Wagner.

Last season, Burnitz batted just .215 with a 19 homers and 54 RBI in his first year with the Mets. However, he got off to a decent start this year, batting .279 with two homers and five RBI.

Burnitz suffered a similar injury on his right hand in 1999 that caused him to miss just over a month.

The Mets still have eight players on their disabled list, a group that includes star catcher Mike Piazza, who could miss the rest of the season with a groin injury, and first baseman Mo Vaughn, who is out with a knee injury.

The Mets will make an additional roster move to make room for Burnitz prior to Friday's game.

Cincinnati Reds righthander Ryan Dempster was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with an inflamed nerve in the right side of his neck, an injury that has bothered him since spring training.

Dempster was 0-2 with a 10.64 ERA in his last two outings and missed a start on May 9. He allowed nine runs and a career-high 11 hits in six innings of Thursday's 9-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Overall, Dempster is 1-4 with a 7.62 ERA in nine starts and one relief appearance for the Reds this season.

To take his roster spot, Cincinnati recalled infielder Rainer Olmedo from Class AA Chattanooga of the Southern League.

Olmedo, who turns 22 a week from Saturday, will be making his major league debut. He batted .299 with two homers and 12 RBI in 45 games with Chattanooga.

Dempster is the second Red in as many days to land on the disabled list, joining veteran shortstop Barry Larkin.

The Baltimore Orioles placed outfielder Larry Bigbie on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with a right shoulder strain.

Bigbie was injured while diving for a ball in Wednesday's 7-6 victory over the Anaheim Angels. He is hitting .239 with one homer and five RBI in 22 games.

To take Bigbie's place on the roster, the Orioles recalled outfielder Luis Matos from Ottawa of the Class AAA International League. Matos hit .212 in 120 games over parts of the last three seasons with the Orioles.

The Orioles also announced that ourfielder Gary Matthews Jr. was claimed on waivers by the San Diego Padres. Matthews hit .204 with two homers and 20 RBI in 41 games for the Orioles this season.
