GAME NOTES: Already with four wins in Western Athletic Conference play this season, the Warriors of Hawaii take aim at their fifth victory against a league opponent when they take on the Fresno State Bulldogs from Bulldog Stadium this Friday night in front of a national TV audience. The Warriors had little trouble in dispensing with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, the team with the longest losing streak in Division I-A football at the moment, last Saturday night, 37-14. The win was the second in a row for Hawaii and the fourth in the last five outings overall. The only setback during that stretch came against league-leading Boise State, which captured a 58-31 win on the blue field in Idaho. As for the Bulldogs, they have certainly had their share of ups and downs in 2002 after being a nationally-ranked power only a year ago. This year the team began with three losses in the first four games and although the Bulldogs won three straight against the likes of Rice, Colorado State and SMU, the squad was dumped hard by that pesky Boise State team again last Friday night, 67-21. Hawaii was one of the two teams that handed Fresno State a regular season loss last year, a 38-34 victory out on the island in 2001. The series, which dates back to 1938, is led by FSU, 18-15-1. The two teams have alternated wins over the last eight meetings.

Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang passed for 403 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Warriors to a 37-14 victory over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in WAC action from Aloha Stadium last Saturday night. Chang completed 34-of-49 passes in the victory for Hawaii and in the process, became the school's all-time leader in passing yards and total offense. Britton Komine led the Warriors with nine catches for 140 yards as the team produced 579 yards of total offense, but was also penalized 15 times for a loss of 128 yards along the way. Hawaii's running game, which has been a bit more respectable this year, fell back into its old habits in gaining just 66 yards on 11 attempts against the Golden Hurricane. John West currently leads a stable of runners for the Warriors with 193 yards and four scores, which ties him with Thero Mitchell for the most rushing touchdowns. Chang has been the primary passer for the squad, posting 2,126 yards and 12 touchdowns in seven games. His 303.7 ypg lead the conference, but his 127.7 quarterback rating is just 50th in the nation. With nearly 512 ypg in total offense, the Warriors are tops in the WAC and second in the nation behind only Marshall.

Hawaii's defense didn't have a whole lot to worry about last weekend as it had to do little more than keep the team with the longest losing streak in the country to respectable numbers. By giving up just 14 points to Tulsa, Hawaii lowered its average points allowed this season to 27.6 ppg, third lowest in the conference. The squad did bend a bit in giving up 257 yards through the air to the Golden Hurricane, a significant amount more than the 208.6 ypg allowed on the average, which leads the league. While the unit has had moments of brilliance, it has struggled when defending inside the red zone. Opposing teams have been inside the 20-yard line on 32 occasions and have scored points 28 times, including 17 touchdowns. Pisa Tinoisamoa currently leads a balanced tackling effort for the Warriors with 58 stops. Hyrum Peters, a two-time WAC Defensive Player of the Week this season alone, and Chris Brown have 51 stops apiece, while Peters leads the team with four interceptions. Houston Ala has just 25 tackles but leads the unit with seven TFLs and four quarterback sacks.

The Fresno State offense didn't register a first down until midway through the second quarter, and didn't get on the scoreboard until just before the end of the half. With that being said, it should come as little surprise that the Bulldogs fell hard to conference rival Boise State a week ago, 67-21. Starting quarterback Paul Pinegar completed 27-of-53 passes for 371 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions for FSU, while Jermaine Jamison had seven catches for 81 yards and two TDs in the losing effort. Fresno State as a unit finished with just 36 yards rushing on 17 attempts and was flagged 10 times for a loss of 75 yards as well. The Bulldogs are averaging just 100 ypg on the ground this season -- third worst in the conference. Running back Rodney Davis, who went into the contest averaging better than 100 ypg, finished with just 30 yards on nine carries. The team has just five rushing touchdowns this season while it has registered 15 scores through the air thanks to Pinegar and former starter Jeff Grady. Off the field, wide receiver and return man Bernard Berrian, injured in the first game of the season, has decided to redshirt and return for another go in 2003.

The Bulldog defense was nearly nonexistent versus the Broncos, allowing the home squad to put up 212 yards rushing and another 476 yards passing between a couple of signal callers. The 688 yards of total offense for Boise State turned out to be a new school record, coming in front of the largest crowd ever to watch a sporting event in the state of Idaho. Fresno State is now giving up 32 ppg to opponents in 2002, with much of that coming on the ground.

Teams have posted 17 rushing touchdowns against the Bulldogs and a hefty 195.4 ypg rushing overall. The squad has been a little tougher to get past through the air, permitting only 12 scores. Opponents have also found it easier to score points as the game wears on, scoring a collective 51 points in the first quarter and building up to 83 by the game's final period. Cameron Worrell leads the unit in tackles after eight games with 65, while James Sanders ranks second with 62. All-America candidate Nick Burley (41 tackles) has been slowed by all the attention that he's been getting but still leads the squad with eight TFLs and has a team-high four sacks.

This could be a very tricky game for the Warriors because, while they have a lot riding on this contest, Fresno State is more or less throwing up its hands and going all out because it has nothing to lose. Expect the Bulldogs to have a decent showing in front of the home crowd, but not one strong enough to stop a Hawaii offense that is averaging nearly 42 ppg this season.
