Friday's Tip Sheet

Fans and players alike aren?t real keen on the preseason as a whole. How can anyone be excited about seeing your favorite stars playing a total of two series? And you can?t forget about how real the injuries can be in these games that don?t count in earnest.

Week 3 is different than the other exhibition contests. This is the dress rehearsal game for many of the teams in the NFL. That means we?ll get to see the starters last at least the first half.

While that is good information to know, bettors want something geared towards their needs. They want to be able to focus on a trend that can fatten their bankroll in preparation for the regular season.

One trend that is apparent is that home teams are doing quite well during the preseason as evidenced by a 22-10 straight up record. As dominant as they?ve been on home turf, they?re only 17-14-1 against the spread after two weeks of play.

Will the home teams be able to cover the spread on Friday? Let?s take a look at both games on the schedule.

New England at Washington ? 8:00 p.m. EDT, CBS

The preseason normally means next to nothing for the Patriots. However, this year was different because of Tom Brady and how he would fare since having a year off. Brady was solid in his first outing, completing 10 of 15 passes for 100 yards and a pair of scores in just over a quarter of playing time in Philadelphia. He was roughed up by the Bengals last week with just four completions on eight attempts for 57 yards and was sacked once.

It would appear that Brady is going to be getting the brunt of the work on Friday night, playing at least the first and second quarters. Kevin O?Connell looks like he?s won the backup job over Andrew Walter after playing the majority of Week 2 against Cincinnati.

Washington hasn?t given us too much insight as to what we can expect in this tilt. The Redskins couldn?t attempt a field goal, let alone find the endzone, in a 23-0 decision in Baltimore. Their defense didn?t do all that much to impress in letting the Ravens rack up 500 total yards.

Jim Zorn has said that all four QBs on the roster (Jason Campbell, Todd Collins, Colt Brennan, Chase Daniel), but Campbell will handle the entire first half of play. The real battle here is between Brennan and Daniel, who are in a dogfight for the No. 3 spot.

Most sportsbooks have listed the Patriots as 3 ?-point road favorites with a total of 37 ? for this contest.

Bill Belichick has never cared much for the preseason portion of the schedule. However, his teams do play up to the moment for the dress rehearsals. New England is 5-2 SU and 5-1-1 ATS in its last seven preseason Week 3 battles they?ve had since 2002.

Washington is 2-1 SU, but 1-2 ATS in its three home games under Jim Zorn?s tutelage.

Green Bay at Arizona ? 10:00 p.m. EDT

The betting shops have installed Arizona as a 3 ?-point home ?chalk? with a total of 41. Pretty standard line for a preseason game, but the total certainly points to us having a high scoring affair.

Arizona gave up the most passing touchdowns last season (36), which is more than a little odd for a Super Bowl participant. The Cards have held their own against the pass during the preseason though as they?ve given up just one touchdown through the air. They have surrendered 390 total passing yards so far.

Aaron Rodgers could have a field day against the Cards? secondary on Friday. He?s completed 13 of 19 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns during the postseason.

It also helps that the Packers have seen the ?over? go 10-4 during Mike McCarthy?s tenure as head coach.

New England Patriots at Washington Redskins (+3.5, 37.5)

Starter/injury Report

The Redskins will be without several big-name starters due to injuries.

Cornerback Carlos Rodgers will not play because of a lingering calf injury and will be replaced in the starting lineup by Fred Smoot.

Running back/kick returner Rock Cartwright is still suffering from a groin injury that has plagued him most of training camp, and isn?t expected to play. Devin Thomas, a second-year pro who returned kicks at Michigan State, will replace Cartwright on special teams.

Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and wide receiver Santana Moss are both listed as questionable and will be game-time decisions.

The first-team offense continues to be a big concern for the Skins. The unit has yet to score a touchdown through two preseason games and quarterback Jason Campbell has looked particularly awful. He was just 1-of-7 for 10 yards in last week?s 17-13 win over Pittsburgh.

Zorn said the plan is to play the first-unit as long as it takes for them to find a consistent rhythm.

Chase Daniel and Colt Brennan, who are in a heated battle for third-string quarterback, will come in after Campbell.

The Patriots have gone into regular season mode and are expected to have close to their full complement of players, according to head coach Bill Belichick. He said his players are ?getting used to the scouting report?the different ways we break down our opponents and get into more of a weekly preparations schedule, as opposed to a training camp practice routine.?

Tight end Ben Watson, who had been out with an undisclosed injury, returned to practice this week and is expected to play.

Line movement

The Patriots have remained 3.5-point road favorites at Legends.com and the total has dipped slightly from 38 to 37.5.

Trends

The Redskins are 3-4 ATS and the over/under is 2-5 in preseason games under Jim Zorn. The Patriots are 19-17-3 ATS in the preseason and their over/under record is 16-26 with Belichick on the sidelines.

Green Bay Packers at Arizona Cardinals (-3, 42.5)

Starter/injury report

It?s been a near picture-perfect preseason so far for the undefeated Packers and the news on the injury front is limited. The biggest question mark surrounds backup quarterback Matt Flynn. The second-year signal caller suffered a bruised shoulder in the Packers win over Buffalo last week and is listed as questionable.

Starter Aaron Rodgers is expected to play the entire first half and if Flynn is unable to go, Brian Brohm will take over under center.

The Packers defense, which seems to be adjusting well to the 3-4 scheme installed by new defensive coordinator Dom Capers, could gain the services of linebacker Nick Barnett for the first time this preseason. Barnett returned to the practice field this week for the first time since having ACL surgery last November.

The Packers will be without first-round rookie pass rusher Clay Mathews (hamstring) and defensive tackle Justin Harrel also appears unlikely to play.

The high-octane offense that led the Cardinals to last year?s NFC championship has been M.I.A so far this August. The Cardinals have just 16 points and one touchdown so far and the first-team offense has yet to reach the end zone.

The Cardinals offense is trying to get on track possibly without the services of a pair of productive receivers. Anquan Boldin is questionable (hamstring pull) and Steve Breaston also might not play because of a knee injury.

Arizona first-round pick Beanie Wells is expected to make his long-awaited debut after showing no ill effects from an injured ankle this week at practice. Reports out of Arizona have described the running back?s performance this week at practice as ?explosive.?

Line movement

The Cards opened as 3-point favorites and have been bet to -3.5 at Legends.com. The over/under opened at 42 and has been bet down to 41 points.

Trends

The Cardinals are 3-7 ATS in preseason games under Ken Whisenhunt with a 5-5 over/under mark. The Packers have gone 7-7 ATS under Mike McCarthy and the over/under is 10-4.

NFL Preseason Preview - New England (1-1) at Washington (1-1)

NFL Preseason Preview - New England (1-1) at Washington (1-1)

NFL Preseason Preview - New England (1-1) at Washington (1-1)

- Fans at FedEx Field will be eager to see some progress from their first-string offense on Friday night, when the Washington Redskins play host to the New England Patriots in the third preseason warm-up for both teams.

Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell has played poorly in his team's first two preseason games, completing just 4-of-13 passes for 48 yards, including 1-of-7 for 10 yards in last Saturday's 17-13 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Washington first-string offense has yet to score a touchdown during the exhibition period.

Campbell and the Redskins number ones should see their most extensive action of the preseason on Friday night, in keeping with third-game-of-preseason tradition, and the offense will be better off if that group includes veteran wideout Santana Moss.

Moss played against the Steelers after missing the team's preseason opener against the Ravens, but does not have a catch during the tune-up period to date.

The work of Washington's reserve quarterbacks should bear watching as well, as rookie Chase Daniel and second-year-pro Colt Brennan are believed to be battling for the third QB job behind Campbell and veteran Todd Collins.

Daniel, the undrafted ex-Missouri star, improved his case last week by completing 6-of-8 passes for 52 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Brennan, meanwhile, was 3-of-5 for 42 yards and threw his second interception in as many games.

The story for the Patriots, meanwhile, as it was in the club's first two August matchups, will be the work of quarterback Tom Brady.

Brady, recovering from a knee injury that sidelined him for the final 15 weeks of the 2008 season, was 4-of-8 for 57 yards in last week's 7-6 loss to the Bengals, and took a hard shot from Cincinnati defensive end Robert Geathers after dropping back to pass in that contest.

The offense should have a better chance for success if tight end Benjamin Watson, who has been absent during the preseason with an undisclosed injury, is able to return on Friday. Watson returned to practice earlier this week.

Also having a chance to play for the first time as a Patriots is linebacker Paris Lenon, who has also yet to play in the preseason to date.

New England owns a 12-7 advantage in its all-time preseason series with Washington, including a 41-0 home rout in the last such meeting, prior to the 2006 season.

NFL Preseason Preview - Green Bay (2-0) at Arizona (0-2)

NFL Preseason Preview - Green Bay (2-0) at Arizona (0-2)

NFL Preseason Preview - Green Bay (2-0) at Arizona (0-2)

The Green Bay Packers will try to build on an encouraging preseason to date on Friday night, when they travel to meet the Arizona Cardinals in the third preseason tune-up for both teams.

After beginning the preseason with a 17-0 blanking of the Cleveland Browns, the Packers took a 24-0 lead into halftime against the Buffalo Bills last Saturday, in a game they would eventually win, 31-21.

The team's new 3-4 defensive scheme, installed by first-year defensive coordinator Dom Capers in the offseason, has thus far played to strong reviews but will face a stiff test from the Cardinals and their top-notch attack.

Arizona should display particular urgency on offense after dropping to 0-2 in the preseason with last Saturday's 17-6 loss to the San Diego Chargers. The Cardinals have just 16 points and one touchdown during the preseason to date, and the first-team offense has yet to reach the end zone.

Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner, wide receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, and the rest of Arizona's No. 1 attack should play the majority of the first half against the Packers before yielding to backups.

Whether any of the Cardinals' personnel groups includes first-round running back Chris "Beanie" Wells remains to be seen. Wells has missed Arizona's first two preseason outings with an ankle injury, but returned to practice this week and will have a chance to play, barring any setbacks.

Elsewhere on the injury front for Arizona, cornerback Bryant McFadden (ankle), wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) and quarterback Brian St. Pierre (back) are questionable, but second-round rookie pass rusher Cody Brown (UConn) was shut down for the season earlier this week due to a dislocated wrist

Packers starting QB Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the first-string should play the entire first half on Saturday, though who will succeed Rodgers in the lineup is a mystery. Backup Matt Flynn left the Buffalo win with a right shoulder injury, and is considered questionable for the Arizona contest.

Second-round disappointment Brian Brohm will be the next quarterback in if Flynn is unavailable.

For the Green Bay defense, linebacker Nick Barnett (knee) has a chance to see his first action of the preseason on Friday, though first-round rookie pass rusher Clay Matthews (hamstring) and defensive tackle Justin Harrell (back) appear unlikely to play.

The Packers hold a 4-1 edge in their all-time preseason series with the Cardinals, including a 29-21 road victory in the last such meeting, prior to the 2002 campaign.

The teams will also play a meaningful contest in 2009, when they square off on Jan. 3rd for the regular season finale from Glendale.

Arizona favored to give sharp effort

Arizona favored to give sharp effort

Arizona favored to give sharp effort

The Arizona Cardinals are the defending NFC champions and are winless in the preseason, no big deal right? None of the top three quarterbacks have generated an offensive touchdown, no big deal right? Kurt Warner had off-season hip surgery and hasn?t looked like the quarterback that took his team to Super Bowl last season, no big deal right? This needs to be the week the Cardinals put it all together, to erase any doubts about them, especially playing at home. Also, we?ll preview the Patriots at the Redskins.

Green Bay at Arizona

The Cardinals are 3.5-point favorites at Sportsbook.com and want this to start building confidence for the upcoming season. Arizona ALMOST won the Super Bowl, yet the fact remains they were 9-7 in the regular season in 2008 and were not considered elite team when the playoffs began. In this contest, Warner and the first team offense want to put up points and will face Green Bay?s new 3-4 defensive scheme, which features a great deal of blitzing. The could mean check downs to Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald, along with some long passes facing one on one coverage.

The Packers have rebuilt their offensive line and though talk out of Green Bay is coach Mike McCarthy is satisfied with progress, the Cards generated four sacks last week. Aaron Rodgers and the first team offense have been crisp. Last week the Pack built 24-0 halftime lead over Buffalo before cruising to 31-21 triumph. However, this is first road game which will alter dynamics. Arizona has thrived in this situation with 6-0 ATS record in Week 3 and is 9-0 against the number if off a SU loss and opponent is off double digit win.

Tim Hightower has been outstanding for Arizona, nevertheless, they didn?t pay top draft pick Beanie Wells to sit on the sidelines and be injured. Watch the total in this contest, which presently is 41 points. The Redbirds are 10-2 OVER after scoring seven points or less in the first half in two straight games and Green Bay is 8-1 OVER when playing with six or less days rest.

New England at Washington

Washington entertained the idea of chasing Jay Cutler who wanted out of Denver and gave serious consideration to drafting Mark Sanchez. Neither of those things happened and Redskins fans are starting to wonder if the Washington front office made an error in not following thru. Jason Campbell was believed to a work in progress when he was drafted and it well documented his head has been filled with new offensive schemes annually, dating back to Auburn days. Campbell is no longer a kid quarterback (27 years old) and he is 5 for 20 passing in the preseason, for a whopping 58 yards. This has to be the time he elevates his game. The Redskins are 3.5-point home underdogs, with total of 37.5 and they are 2-12 ATS as an underdog of 3.5 to 9.5 points.

If one reads into comments made by coaches, New England could be edged this week. Coach Bill Belichick was unusually critical of his team?s 7-6 loss at home to Cincinnati as a touchdown favorite. Belichick said ?We just generally had too many mistakes, too many errors in every phase of the game with every unit pretty much in every area.? It has been a different atmosphere in Patriots training camp, more hitting, longer practices and more double sessions. New England is 17-8 ATS in third game of the preseason, including 5-1 ATS since 2003. Tom Brady and his teammates might be in the mood to set an example in this contest.
