Will be interesting to see how this one turns out, if a release is granted does it set a precedent:shrug: If they dont release him are they willing to sit on the scholly to prove a point:shrug: My take is straighten your fucking hat and fulfill your commitment!

Matthew Thomas, the five-star linebacker from Booker T. Washington (Miami, Fla.) and star of Florida State's 2013 recruiting class, has asked the Seminoles' coaching staff for a release so he can sign with Georgia or Southern California.

Thomas spoke with the Miami Herald on Monday, revealing that he informed Jimbo Fisher and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt of his decision late last month. According to the highly-touted linebacker, Florida State's coaches are planning to visit the prospect in South Florida to try to talk things over before granting his release.

"What happened on Signing Day [was] I wasn't sure who I wanted to sign with. I had issues with different schools," Thomas explained. "But when I told my mom I didn't want to sign with anybody and wait and give it a few days she said I couldn't do that. She said, 'FSU is a good school -- pick them. It's close to home.' I wasn't agreeing with it. But I felt like I was being disrespectful to her if I didn't sign. So I made her happy."

Thomas says he told the Florida State coaches that the decision was "nothing personal," and now his mother and father are supporting his efforts to play elsewhere. Thomas originally chose the Seminoles over Georgia, USC and Miami, but a transfer to join the hometown Hurricanes could delay his collegiate debut.

"My dad talked to me and gave me some facts about the situation," Thomas said. "If I tried to go to a school in FSU's conference I would have to sit out a couple years. But that's not what I want to do.

"I've been in Miami all my life. Georgia needs linebackers. It's a big program. I have family in Georgia. USC, growing up I never thought I would have an opportunity that big. I just want to go have fun and play football."

Thomas ranked as the No. 14 overall prospect in the nation according to 247Sports.com and considered a top 5 player in the state of Florida in both the 247Sports and 247 Composite rankings. Florida State clearly wants one last word with Thomas on the issue, but it is possible that Georgia and USC could get a second chance at landing one of the most impressive defensive talents from the 2013 recruiting class.

Working in Thomas' favor, regardless of his choice, is the importance of maintaining good relationships with the community at South Florida powerhouses like Booker T. Washington. Thomas may change his mind after speaking to the Florida State coaches, but it will be interesting to see how the situation plays out if the Seminoles do grant him a release before this fall.

How many times do kids get shoved out or forced to transfer before they complete 4 years when the player isn't cracking the 2-deep and the coaches want the available schollies in the next recruiting class? Or examples like Tuberville recently where a new coach doesn't honor prior verbal scholarship offers of the former staff? It's a two way street in my mind. If the kid wants to go play someplace else, let him.

Not honoring a commitment vs not honoring a signed scholarship is much different imo. I will say however that I agree a few changes need to be made, especially when a coach decides to jump for a bigger pay day. In that case the players should be able to transfer without sitting a year imo.

How is it a different? Most schools have the legal aide on their side that a scholarship is only a one year contract. (I know the Big Ten was moving to a 4 year commitment, unsure if any other conference also is doing this.) A kid could be going there for 3 years, and barely above scout team and then pushed aside. This kid isn't even on campus as a student yet and wants to reconsider and go someplace else. Let him, wish him luck and move on.

The shoving kids aside and forcing them to to transfer when they aren't panning out happens quite a bit more in basketball actually.

I'd say release him outside of your conference, but not within. Since kid is leaving the ACC, I'd say let her rip

Maybe I am wrong and I would love to see where coaches pull scholarships from players since they are yearly, but I do not believe that happens. I have no doubt players are "encouraged" to leave, but if there is a list of documented cases where the coach just pulled scholies I would love to see it. I actually have no problem with them giving him and outright release, but the point(at least mine) is that it creates a very slippery slope that others will certainly use as precedent in the future to aid them when trying to do the same thing. Some of those in the future may be legit as well, but some will not. There is a national signing day for a reason. If schools are going to be expected to allow commits to renege, then why even have a National Signing Day?

As a side note on this, one of the local radio guys here has ins at most of the big schools in the South and has said that there is a lot of things about this story that people have not heard. Apparently his mom and dad are split up and have screwed him up. He didn't go into details, just said he felt for the kid. Ironic that the Georgia fan is kinda on the other side of this one as Mark Richt has always said UGA players are free to go as they please with no stipulations, be it Georgia Tech or anywhere in the SEC:lol:

Looking into it more, it does look like technically they can non-renew, but most "help" the kids find somewhere else to play. This is after the year however and not during the time they have a signed scholarship. One place I agree whole heartedly is if they can non-renew, then players should be able to transfer at years end without penalty. I read something that would be really cool, schools getting to decide the length of scholarships. Now not only are the players being competed for, but the length of the guaranteed scholarship would be a selling point. Would be awesome to watch.
