I didn't think it was a difficult concept. Sorry if it's over your head.

Yea I guess it is over my head. Who in their right mind wouldnt want a FG instead of a TD. FSU had to play for the TD no matter what so UNC was going to play the same defense no matter the score at that point at least if they were up 8 they knew the worse they could come out of the drive would be tied. Where if memory serves me correct that would lead to OT with a chance to win.

I hope and pray you have never coached or played football because with that thinking im sure you wouldnt have lasted long. :sadwave:

So. Cal
butch davis is a genious

nice punt with 4+ left and down 3 points on 4th and 4 from the fsu 45......god forbid you go for it and, you know, convert and keep the ball.

nahhhh

lets punt and rely on that defense that's been shredded the last 15 mins!

we can pin em deep! wrong, another punt that flys into the endzone

we've got timeouts left! big deal

we're gonna stop em! wrong again butchy baby

we're gonna get the ball back and score? has he seen his pass offense???

a total fuking moronic decision by another stupid coach that probably proudly proclaims that he and his staff put in 100 hours per week of work.

You just proved my point in your post. That's exactly what I said in my last post. There's a HUGE difference in mindset between thinking "hey, even if we give up a TD and the 2-pointer we will still be tied" and "we're only up 4, if we give up a TD we'll be down and we could lose the game." That's my whole point. There's a much bigger sense of urgency to close things out on D when you're up 4 than there is when you're up 8. I highly doubt that they would play the same D in both scenarios. You would probably see much more aggressive play from a defense that MUST get a stop to win the game than you would a team who could give up 8 points and still be tied.

My whole argument was based on a betting standpoint, by the way. I assumed you saw that in the first post. As a bettor, I want my team to feel like they have to get a stop on D, not know that they can give up 8 points and still have a chance to win in OT. Personally, I've lost multiple games over the years where a team was up 8, gave up the TD but then stopped the 2-pointer, so they won the game. Trust me, they didn't give a shit that they gave up the TD. If you haven't had any bad beats like that, consider yourself lucky.
