I went back and reviewed the Furman -3' @ CITADEL matchup and it was merely a poor call on my part.
Furman's last game loss/no cover (-13 ATS) @ Georgia Southern and their loss/no cover in the role of a home favorite vs Davidson were red flags which I seemed to ignore.
My handicapping showed this to be a play against the dog rather than a play on the favorite, but review showed I forced the play rather than have a decided advantage. All of the clues were shouting "No Play" and I tried to get cute.
With my handicapping method, road favorites (in most cases) need to have pretty good credentials in order to cover in this difficult role.
In review, Furman didn't have the portfolio strength and the no cover should not have been a surprise.
