Sony's President Kunitake Ando has said that Xbox will change the traditional five-year console lifecycle and could force Sony to release PlayStation 3 sooner than it would have liked.
Xbox could change the economics of the $20bn games console business, warned Kunitake Ando, Sony's president and chief operating officer, in an FT report. "The biggest threat to PlayStation 2 is that the Xbox changes the industry's lifecycle. It is unclear how long we can keep this business model."
Ando said Xbox could radically shorten that five-year lifecycle. "If it reduces it to three years we are okay," he explained, adding that the company might have to shift to PlayStation 3 earlier than it intended.
