Thanks Mags. The cable box is Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4250 HDC.

You're right the connection is optical video out. I was getting confused last nite.

In order to get surround do I connect the optical video out to the reciever? Where does it connect on the reciever.

I think you mean optical AUDIO out (you said video). It would connect to an optical audio input on the receiver that corresponds to the receiver's input you'll be using to listen to the sound (probably one marked "TV" or "Cable" or "Satellite").

I just checked the back of your box, and it offers both optical audio out AND coax audio out.... use the optical one (requires a special cord - and be careful when plugging them in - they need to be lined up correctly).

Good Luck!

Above the Clouds....
You're right I did it again. It is AUDIO. I'll have to get the cable.

Is it correct that without that cable I won't get surround?

Thanks!

To get Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, YES, you need to have the digital optical cable going to your receiver (For programs that broadcast DD 5.1 - which is 99% of the primetime shows that are in HD today).

The rest of the time, when watching SD, your audio receiver will show something like "Pro Logic" - which is a Dolby product that produces a surround sound effect through your home theater speaker setup. But it doesn't do a very good job - and is nothing like DD 5.1.

The thing is, with DD 5.1, 6 separate channels of sound are sent through that little cord - 1 for each speaker (5) and a separate one for the powered subwoofer.

Having this, at a minimum, will make watching TV and movies on TV (and even sports as you will hear the crowd behind you during HD games) a much more pleasurable experience.
