Why would they even bring this stuff up during the middle of the NCAA tournament?

The agent for Maryland coach Gary Williams flew to Las Vegas on Monday to meet with UNLV president Carol Harter and athletic director Charles Cavagnaro and receive a lucrative multiyear contract offer for Williams to coach the Rebels, a source close to the school's search said.

Rob Ades, the Washington-based agent for Williams, will leave Las Vegas with a contract offer that would pay Williams in excess of $1 million per year. The agent and the school, the source said, have been in contact for at least a week.

The source said Williams has not decided to accept the offer, but is open to considering it.

He took over a losing program on NCAA probation and has delivered eight consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, eight upper-division Atlantic Coast Conference finishes and five Sweet 16s

During a midseason losing streak, Williams and his team were treated to boos at Cole Field House.

Jack, do you happen to know what his current compensation is from the University???

I am in Maryland and they just had Williams on local news, he emphatically denied the report and stated that he has no interest in Vegas at all. His contract runs thru 2008 at Maryland.

They also said the UNLV website is denying that they have had any contact regarding Gary Williams.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- With his basketball team ranked No. 2 in the nation, Maryland coach Gary Williams now has a contract that could keep him at the university until 2008.

The new contract includes a base salary of more than $156,000 with numerous bonuses tied to the team's performance. If the Terrapins reach the NCAA Final Four, Williams would make about $800,000, sources told The (Baltimore) Sun. An NCAA title could earn him as much as $900,000, according to the newspaper.

That represents an increase of $300,000 from Williams' old contract. In 1994, Williams signed a seven-year deal with a three-year rollover option.

Under the terms of the contract announced Monday, Williams would remain coach through May 2005, with an option for three additional years.

Williams, 53, will continue to be compensated for radio and television appearances, a shoe and apparel deal with Nike, and basketball camps.

The school will also pay annual premiums on a $1 million disability insurance policy.

``I really wanted it done before the season started but it didn't work out that way,'' Williams told The Washington Post. ``But it's great to have it done now. I don't have to worry about it anymore.''

Maryland is enjoying its best season in years with a 7-0 record and a No. 2 ranking in The Associated Press poll. The Terps has been in the 64-team NCAA tournament for the past five years and reached the Sweet 16 last year.

As a Maryland resident and local fan, I say let UNLV have him. Maybe Maryland will hire Rick Pitino (I know ...wishful thinking).

Well then why in the world would he send his agent to Vegas to check out the situation? I guarantee ya his agent didn't go out there without confering with Williams first.

Every coaching contract in America has some sort of escape clause, and I'm sure Williams is no different.
