Taxes on cigs here are going up $1 per pack starting Jan 1st so I decided to give it a try. They priced me out of smoking. I refuse to pay $5 a pack. (smoke 2 packs a day for 30 years).

So 3 weeks ago I went to the Dr and got a script for Chantix. Smoked the 1st week (like your suppose to do). Havent had a ciggarette in the last 2 weeks. Had a few cravings in the beginning of week 2 but nothing real bad. Been able to drink beer without falling off the non-smoking wagon. Go back to the Dr next week to get another script for 1 more months supply. Shouldnt have to take them after that.

I will list the good and bad sides I had with Chantix.

Good
It actually takes away the craving for cigs.
Great dreams.
Best thing since sliced bread.

Bad..for me anyways
Makes me tired after I take a pill. Going to talk to the Dr about that next week.
Personality has changed...dont get happy or sad..(even when drinking beer)its like Im just in a neutral state.
Get irritated with the wife over stupid shit. (never happened before)
Eat like a pig now..will work on that after the holidays.
Stool goes completely soft...not a good thing when you think its air coming out.

Even with the bad things for me.. I wouldnt change a thing. For me the pills are working.

Wife and I talked about the personality and irritation thing. Decided to stick with it because it will only be for about another month. Everything should go back to normal after I stop taking the pills.

The wife is happy that Im quitting (she has never nagged me about it). Not for health reasons...she is figuring that the $300 a month that I dont spend in smokes can be used as a payment on a bigger bike for her.

I dont smoke but I never understood the tax on cigarettes. This debate might be too heavy for some of the people here, so i wont delve into the oxi moron of it.

Congrats!!!!

Just please be careful. Heard bad things about that drug. There has been a ton of talk about that drug in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. The guy in this story was a roomate of a guy on a local sports talk station that I listen to. He was shocked at the behavior it caused in his friend. Once again I am very proud of anyone who kicks this habit, but please be careful.

Keep up the good work. I smoked for over 10 years and now have been smoke free for almost 8 years. Tooth picks saved me.

Thanks for the congrats.

Tried the patch a couple of years ago and lasted exactly 1 day. Still have them up in the cupboard. Went with Chantix this time because it dosent put nicotine in your system like the patches do. Different things work better for different folks.

I read as much as I could find on the internet before talking to my Dr. I can see how it can change how people act. Like I said for me it puts me in a neutral zone. Not happy..not sad.... just there. (if that makes any sense) Havent had any really bad nightmares. I dream just about everytime I go to sleep and remember what the dreams were when I wake up. That dosent bother me.

Old School..I am figuring its the Chantix that makes me tired. Never had the problem until I started taking them. If it still keeps up after I am off them I will definatly get my thyroid checked.

I'm past the 3 month period on chantix and did not renew the prescription.

That neutral state goes away. I was back to cursing on my drive to work about 6 weeks into it.

I never felt like the drug made me tired. I did feel nauseous when I took the morning pill. I never ate breakfast so that might be why. I added 20 lbs from constant eating but have since given back 10.

Personally, I feel like the Chantix helped me quite a bit, especially through the early period where the cravings would have been bad.

Good Luck

When I make it through these holidays without smoking, esp. at 'in-laws', I will be able to stop...cold turkery..

NOT given up my Coors Lights though...

Jack...huge decrease in coughing. Toughest part was giving up the repetition of smoking. I always smoked at certain times during the day. It took 2 days to get over that part. GL to you.

Joshnaudi...Did you stop taking the pills all at once or did you wean yourself off them?

If you can quit for 2 weeks you can quit forever. You will not regret it. I quit cold turkey 15 years ago and never looked back.
Good luck Bubbas1!
