A 7.9 Earthquake :eek: :eek: :eek:

==============================================

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A major earthquake (news - web sites) rocked a sparsely populated area of interior Alaska early Sunday afternoon, cracking highways and roads, knocking over fuel tanks and shaking rural homes.

The magnitude 7.9 quake, centered 90 miles south of Fairbanks, was strongly felt in Anchorage about 270 miles to the south. It hit at 1:13 p.m. Alaska Standard Time, said Bruce Turner of Alaska and Tsunami Warning Center.

The state patrol said no injuries were immediately reported.

"It shook for a good 30 seconds," Turner said. It did not generate a tsunami, he said.

The earthquake occurred on the Denali Fault and had a shallow depth, said John Lahr, geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey (news - web sites)'s National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo. Shallow earthquakes (news - web sites) generally are felt over a wider area.

"We expected this would have surface rupture that geologists could see on the ground and study," he said.

KCAM-radio in Glennallen reported that fuel tanks in the village of Slana were tipped over and nearby highways were damaged.

Paul Whitmore of tsunami warning center said the highway between Anchorage and Fairbanks was damaged and Alaska State Troopers closed the road to one lane. Cracks were reported in roads in the region.

Jill Woster said she was driving between Fairbanks and her home in North Pole when the quake began.

"The car felt like it was going to fall apart," she said. Woster arrived home to find pictures off the walls and on the floor, along with glassware.

Earthquakes above magnitude 7 are considered major ? capable of widespread, heavy damage.

In 1964, the "Good Friday" earthquake left 131 people dead in Alaska. Current measurements put that quake's magnitude at 9.2.

A moderate earthquake shook the central Plains earlier Sunday. The 4.3 quake hit about 2:45 p.m., some 30 miles northwest of O'Neill, Neb., the geological survey said.

There was no doubt that it was a huge one as it took place.I was on the second floor of Steves Sports Bar watching the power and telephone lines sway back and forth as the poles bent to and fro.People were talking about watching trees doing the same thing in their backyards.This hasn't happened during any other earthquake I've experienced in 21 years of living here.Every second seems like an hour.The ground and floor seem to be tilting and surging back and forth.There was another large one a couple of weeks ago that occurred as I was standing in front of the toilet taking a leak at 3:30 am.I groggily wondered why I was having to steady myself by holding the doorway to the bathroom.Only when I came to bed and the female voice asked if I felt the Eartquake did I realize why I was having the balancing problems.Its kinda like being on the point of a gyroscope or on a tiltawhirl at the carnival.The floor or ground sometimes just rolls.During the one they refer to as the great earthquake of '64,the largest one on record,it lasted for five full minutes and mountain range around Anchorage had permanently jumped 30 to 60 feet in altitude by the time it was over,which I find mind boggling.Mother Nature can humble us all with her might,awe us with her beauty.Thats why most of us live here,if you define quality of life by the amount of times Mother Nature takes your breath away.The other reasons are financial opportunity or to get away from your problems(aka the end of the road syndrome.)After it was over everyone went back to their drinking and football.
