Anyone know the answer to this? (Not a guess, but know for sure?)
My mother's cousin just died. I am trying to figure out her relationship to me. Family tree looks like this:
Generation 1: My great-grandparents
Generation 2: Ray and Vera, brother and sister. Vera was my grandmother.
Generation 3a: Lois (this is the person who died). She was the daughter of Ray.
Generation 3b: Claire (my mother). She is the daughter of Vera.
Generation 4b: Me.
I looked up the following definitions...
cousin Person with whom one has ancestors in common
cousin, first Person with whom one has in common two grandparents and their ancestors
cousin, removed Person descended from a common ancestor, but by a different number of generations; one generation would be ?once removed,? two generations would be ?twice removed?
cousin, second Person with whom one has in common two great-grandparents and their ancestors
Now, initially I thought this meant I was Lois' second cousin once removed, since we share great-grandparents, but not grandparents. But then I realized...we only share my great-grandparents, but to her those were her grandparents.
Is it possible that to ME, she is my second-cousin once removed, and that to HER, I am her first-cousin once removed? These definitions are not complete enough I think.
Anyways, I'm confused. Trying to sign her online guestbook but I want to get the relationship right. Any help is appreciated!
(Also, I find it odd that by the definition of "cousin" here, everyone in my family, including my parents and even my sister, would technically be considered my "cousin". All that is required is common ancestors. That is strange...and surely not correct).
