One year ago, Seton Hall turned around its season with a win at Georgetown that sent the Pirates climbing up the Big east standings. Can it happen again for Seton hall, or for that matter, for Georgetown?
The Pirates have dropped four of six since the two teams last played on Jan. 13, Georgetown five of six.
Much like Providence, the Pirates are not a deep team but feature four starters who can take over a game at any time. One that needs to be checked in this game is guard Khadeen Carrington, held to just four points in the earlier game with the Hoyas but averaging 13.4 points per game in the five games since. Carrington is a guard who drives inside and that is a matchup the hoyas' guards have been unable to stop this year. But where Carrington was contained versus the hoyas in January, guard Myles Powell was not, scoring 19 points in the Pirates' win and averaging just under 17 points in the prior six games. Powell has gained confidence from three point range and at 41 percent, cannot be discounted when he gets the opportunity.
Three-guard desi Rodriguez is in mid-season form, and that's good for the Pirates. If Rodriguez is on, so to are the Pirates, whose media notes state that Rodriguez "is averaging a team-best 17.6 points per game, good for eighth in the Big East. He is shooting 50.3 percent (160-for-318) from the field and 37.8 percent (42-for-111) from long range. The Pirates are 10-3 this season when Rodriguez is the team's leading scorer." It's a tough matchup for Kaleb Johnson given Rodriguez's quickness and movement off the ball.
Seton Hall needs more from its front line. Its recent woes have not seen much from forward Michael Nzei, now down to 2.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, while Angel Delgado had only 11 points and seven rebounds in the loss to Marquette. Any early fouls on Jessie Govan could open the floodgates on Delgado inside, but the Pirates need an inside presence to prevail in this one.
Keys to the game :
1. Free Throws: Seton Hall was just 20 of 33 from the line versus Marquette, and lost by three. In its game with Villanova, the Hall was a mere 50 percent from the line.
2. Jonathan Mulmore: A non-factor in Tuesday's game with Providence, Mulmore needs to get points as well as stops versus the Seton Hall backcourt.
3. Second Chance Points: The Hoyas surrendered only six to the Pirates in this season's game at Newark, but 14 to Providence.
Outside of the regular season finale versus Villanova, Georgetown can be competitive in every Big East game this season. The chances are unlikely these two teams will meet again in the Big East tournament, but GU's chances to take the Hall are as promising as was Providence, and perhaps just as elusive.
