But dogs are domesticated. I'm assuming this deer (or at least it's parents) were captured.

I have much more sympathy for someone who gets killed by their domesticated pet dog than someone who captures a wolf and tries to keep it. ...Then again, do any dogs other than pit bulls ever kill their owners?

Speaking of which a woman in FLA was just killed last week in FLA by her 2 pits.

65, you seem extremely knowledgeable in this area. I would imagine people like yourself hold a great disdain for these people that "HUNT", for animals basically cornered in large cages. Every time I hear something about this ridiculous practice, it enrages me. Why is there not more of a public outcry for this "sport". Is there just not enough publicity? Seems not far from dog fighting which we all now see brought to light with vick. Obviously you hunt, and are very knowledgeable about it. I myself was never a hunter, even before my injury. But certainly don't have any ill feelings for those that go out and hunt, and eat what they kill, or whatever.

However these obviously rich individuals that pay thousands to hunt enclosed animals, basically nearly domesticated wildlife really piss me off, maybe I'm way off, but I can't imagine someone like yourself, of which there are probably thousands and thousands of,has much use for this practice. How does it remain legal? Just low publicity like the dog Fighting thing?

I have the exact same feelings and disdain for this, shamrock. You are not way off base.

Actually, this is a huge issue in the hunting community, and the great majority of hunters are against this.

Legally, this is seen no different than raising cattle. I guess if people would pay, a farmer could charge x amount of dollars to shoot cows. Cows don't have antlers, though!

Terrible Ted Nugent is often portrayed as the Hollywood hunter and campaigning for those rights, etc., but truth be told, he's hunted quite a few high-fence ranches.

smurphy, these deer/elk ARE domesticated. These animals go back many generations in pens. Their great, great, great, great, great, etc.. grandbuck and grand-does were all in captivity too. Compare them to cattle or horses, seriously.

This looks like the dog from my nightmares.

They are very intimidating dogs. Physically imposing & very protective dogs. Not quite the loose cannon pits are, but this is not a dog you want to tempt.

A-1 Guard Dogs. 150 pounds of protection.

Above the Clouds....
We have many car/deer incidents around here. Several years back a deer that came through a windshield ended up in the backseat. The deer killed a toddler in a carseat, very sad situation. Not sure how that fits in but deer can be dangerous in tight areas.

Horrible & sad no doubt....

But is that the deer's fault? Could the driver have been driving too fast? Or does it go deeper in that we as humans have so invaded their habit & left them with so little that in fact we are to blame? Same can be said about cougar attacks in Cali & Bear encounters all over the country....

Just something to think about...

They should have been humane about it and just given the buck some ketamine. I hope others in the cervid family don't suffer the same fate.

Nobody's fault. Just a freak accident that turned out really sad. There is alot of farmland and a National park where they live but also a lot of 65mph highways where they wander. This is not a big developed area by any means. The fact that the are not hunted as in the past has caused an over population. It is not uncommon to see 25-30 deer standing along the road. At nite when you can't see them coming is why they are hit.
