I didnt follow Gators close enough to remember each game but he ran it up plenty. I specifiaclly remember the game against Kentucky where they threw about a 60 yd td on the last play - ahead 22 at the time -

First of all I hate it when teams start looking like Miami Canes.
Leach is wrong running a flea flicker. And TT players looked liked fools with there end zone skit.
But lets not forget Navy last yr vs my Army boys.I know its a rivalry but Navy ran it up 58-12.Candeto scored 5 td's.Now of course they didn't pass but thats not part of their attack.
Johnson could of pulled Candeto midway thru the 3rd qrt.I think he scored his 5th with a few minuts to go in the 3rd qrt.
Johnson did call off the "dogs" in the 4th.
I'm not trying to compare what Leach did to Johnson.Just making a note of it that Navy is no innocent victim. They also beat Eastern Mich or Western Mich this yr and scored 64 or 65 pts.Not sure if the game was competive or not.
Navy did run it up lyr because Berry had made some comments about the midshipman.
Maybe Bobby Knight told Leach to lay it on them.Knight is still close to Army and his buddy Jimmy Crews is the b-ball coach here.
Again not justifying what TT did but Navy been on the other isde of it too.Ask any Army cadet...lyr

i'd say Leech competes pretty well in his conference.....Lubbock isn't exactly the place where powerhouses are built

as far as running it up, who cares...this isn't junior high girls basketball.....let the guys have fun and if you can't compete and cry about it, then don't show up

I agree with you totally in regards to running it up.

OK so maybe my name indicates that I'm a tad biased, but everytime you say that Tech cant compete in the Big 12 tells me your not very familiar with the Big 12. They competed mightily againt Texas, Missouri and Oklaoma St. All games they lost, but certainly could have won.

Those games were some of the most exciting games I've ever seen. Why? because they did compete and quite well. Just a little bit of defense would have won all three.

The comentators were pulling for navy the entire game. I think they were hoping for a feel good story, and when it was obvious that it wasnt gonna happen they were looking for reasons to bitch. They blew this way out of proportion and kept on and on....

I didn't think the flea flicker was called for and yes the end zone celebration was a bit much, but it wasnt worth the 10 minutes of lip service the gave it....

Oh well.... I personally find all the hoopla great. People are talking about tech :D :D :D

I do not agree with the flea-flicker. However,........................Why is football the ONLY sport where you are expected to "give up" if you have a late lead??

In basketball, if you are up 20 with 2 minutes to go, are you expected to throw up bricks, as to not run up the score??

In baseball, if you are up 6 runs in the top of the 9th, do you just swing at every pitch, just to get the game over??

It seems odd that football players are asked "not to play" the entire 60 minutes, when they are leading big. I don't agree with the flea-flicker, but if you are a "spread offense" team, up by 2 scores in the 4th quarter, RUN YOUR OFFENSE!

It's not your job to "shut down" the offense, IT'S THE OPPONENTS!!

This has always been one of my pet peeves! Run the offense, but DON'T use the trick plays!!:)

Why should Tech give up and stop playing when Navy clearly had not?

The real reason gman had a problem with the play calling...

12/30/03 houston bowl 4:30pm EST
PASS
add: 1 unit...2h navy (+3) (+100) over tech

Play every play to the whistle and play a full 60 minutes. If you don't like what the other team is doing, stop them from doing it. Also Leach was as offended by the endzone celebration as much as the Navy coach was.

School in the summer time........

Lots of chirpin this a.m!!!!!!

For Mr Hockey, what if that boolshit had happened in a hockey game???? Not the TD, but the grenade crap. There would've been teeth all over the grass, thats what.

Running it up isn't the issue, using the gadget and rubbing it in like you're somebody is.

Here's to you Mike Leach, BJ Symons, and all you Red Raider football fans.....:thefinger

For the record, in basketball you put in your bench players or run the shot clock down by passing the ball around...in baseball, you might not swing at every pitch but you do swing at close pitches and try to put the ball in play, you also don't steal, take extra bases, etc, etc.....all sports have unwritten rules that classy players/coaches abide by...you may run up the score in any sport if you wish, but in the end you just look like a jerk....there are plenty of jerks in sports....just my opinion

onetrickpony:

props for being extremely ignorant. im up like 30 units in college football, having a great bowl season and you think im worried about a small 2h navy play? lmfao. thats some funny sh1t. texas tech was the right side in the game. obviously you missed the whole point of my post. when youre moving the ball AT WILL like tech was. when EVERY SINGLE PLAY YOURE CALLING is working. do you need to run a flea-flicker with 4:00 to go against an overmatched team? you should be embarrassed for posting that about a 2h bet and missing the point of the post. tech was going to score anyway.

im actually amazed some very intelligent people here are missing the point.

i dont know if i can express my point with any more lucidity:

tech was GOING TO SCORE. every play in their playbook was going to work.

its not about "giving up" or "being nice". its about making your (texas tech) program look like a junior high team.

nobody is saying dont score. im not even saying they shouldnt pass. but to run flea-flickers is a joke when they are moving the ball any way they want all day long

ezcarzamd is correct, that sh1t wouldnt fly in hockey (and mr.hockey knows this).

for comparison:

when youre up 30 in hoops, you arent running backscreens to get guys alley-oop dunks.

you score the ball by simply taking the open shot or lay-up.

if you get that backscreen alley-oop dunk in hoops to increase your lead to 32, what does it prove?

im actually surprised this thread went on this long and elicited so many responses.

also surprised that a lot of missing the point. has nothing to do with passing the ball. has nothing to do with calling the dogs off.

it simply has to do with a flea-flicker being something a junior high coach would call, and the subsequent endzone dance being a joke. celebrate when youre up 7 or 10. not when its obvious you outclass a team late in the game

onetrickpony- im still laughing at your post, and quite honestly, thats disappointing because youre a much more intelligent guy than is reflected by what you posted. shame on you.

the backscreen for a lob dunk in hoops when youre up 30 is really the best comparison i can make.

if you can argue that the lob dunk off a backscreen when youre up 30 is "just playing the game", then id love to hear it.

like i said, it has nothing to do with "sportsmanship". its about making your program look foolish.

score the way youve been scoring the whole game. you dont need to call trick sh1t when your basic stuff is dominating a team

and then to dance and drop like monkeys makes it look worse. did i see endzone dances against oklahoma by tech? (correct me if im wrong. i dont know  )

Im glad he kept the heat on Navy eliminating the backdoor, Navy has no room for bitching Johnson has run it up not only at Navy but at his previous coaching gigs.

I disagree gman. When I see blowouts in hoops, I tend to see more flashier play.
