Bruins' Girard recovering from surgery following accident
July 28, 2003
BOSTON (AP) -- Boston Bruins defenseman Jonathan Girard was recuperating at a hospital in Montreal on Monday, a day after having surgery on a fractured pelvis injured in an automobile accident.
His agent, Bob Sauve, and Ryan Nadeau, a Bruins spokesman, said Girard was in the intensive care unit at Hospital Sacre Coeur. Nadeau said Girard also had fluid removed from his lungs.
Girard also suffered blood loss and has been hospitalized since the accident Thursday near his hometown of Rawdon, Quebec.
``He seemed to be doing good, from what I saw,'' said Sauve, who visited Girard on Monday. The 23-year-old defenseman was still recuperating and didn't speak, Sauve said.
Sauve said Girard lost control of his car around near a curve and the car flipped. Two other passengers in the car were injured, but not as seriously, he said.
Le Journal de Montreal reported that Girard was trapped in the car for about 45 minutes before being freed by an emergency crew.
Girard had six goals and 16 assists in 73 games with the Bruins last season and signed a one-year contract earlier this year. In 150 career NHL games, all with Boston, he has 10 goals and 34 assists.
