Restaurant open, but Vick not

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 03/15/07

Falcons quarterback Michael Vick said he will speak about his infamous postseason water-bottle incident at Miami International Airport sometime soon, but a special media gathering at his new restaurant in East Point on Wednesday was not the place. Nor was it the time.

Vick, in his first public appearance since Atlanta's season-ending loss to Philadelphia on Dec. 31, declined to answer a question from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about being investigated for trying to carry a gimmick water bottle through a security checkpoint at the airport.

His side of the incident, which drew a rebuke from team leadership, is forthcoming, Vick said. For now, though, he acknowledged he was trying to change perceptions about him, with his first business venture in metro Atlanta after six NFL seasons being a start.

"Maybe this will offset some of that attention I've been getting, whether positive or negative," Vick said while sitting in a crowded wine-tasting area at The Tasting Room, the restaurant of which he is the main shareholder of three investors. "It's good for people to see that I'm giving back to the community, where people can see me trying to do something that's positive. There's a lot of people speculating about things I do that are not so positive."

Despite being one of the most recognized players in the NFL, Vick has drawn criticism for not building much of a bridge to the local populace, criticism that grew louder last season when he made an obscene gesture to fans following a loss to the New Orleans Saints at the Georgia Dome.

The negative attention grew worse in January when police reported that Vick tried to carry a water bottle with a secret compartment ? containing a "dark particulant" that police said smelled like marijuana ? through a security stop at Miami airport. He was never charged, and police later said no drugs were in the bottle, but the public backlash was stinging.

Owner Arthur Blank, new coach Bobby Petrino and president Rich McKay, while not pleased with the airport incident, have voiced their support for Vick. They have said they are optimistic that Vick has learned to stay out of the news for reasons other than football and community-based ventures.

Opening this restaurant and an adjoining wine store with business partners Earnest Greer and Frank Jenkins, in an area Vick deemed as "underserved," is part of a plan to establish a better relationship with the local community. Four similar restaurants are planned in different parts of the metro area, as are a handful of more civic enterprises, Vick said.

"I'm looking to expand and take it to a different level," Vick said. "This is my seventh year in the league, I'm growing older, and I need to take some things in a new direction.

"I can't play football forever. I'm going to have to become an entrepreneur and make my money grow. This is a step in a different direction. I'm trying to do some things differently."

Opening a business, trying to make money is not giving back to the fawking community.

Wine seems to be a hot commodity though. Especially wine tasting rooms in rough neighborhoods.

Geez Louise , it never ends.

Hope he is aleady reading his new playbook. Take him a few months to get through it once.

I agree but it looks like Schaub is gone as we speak.

It has taken many years for me to build up the dislike I feel for the Falcons.

They just continuously piss me off.

Vick: Water bottle place to keep jewelry

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 03/22/07

Flowery Branch ? Falcons quarterback Michael Vick said he was carrying jewelry in the 'stash box' of a gimmick water bottle through a security checkpoint at Miami International Airport in January and not anything potentially illegal, including drugs.

In his first remarks regarding the incident in which he was investigated and cleared for any wrongdoing regarding the incident, Vick said he had the bottle with a secret compartment for years to carry his jewelry and that he did not know why airport authorities and police suggested there was the scent or remnants of marijuana in the bottle.

"It was a stash box from my jewelry," Vick said Thursday about the bottle and why he had it. "That's what I told everybody but that wasn't written. Everything else was written about the smell and all that. I sat in the airport for another hour and 30 minutes so if there was something they thought was wrong then they could have come and got me and we could have handled the situation accordingly right on the spot."

..............................................................

Took Vick a few months to come up with that one :142smilie :142smilie :142smilie

Vick's water bottle claim disputed by police

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 03/22/07

Falcons quarterback Michael Vick said Thursday the hidden compartment in the water bottle he tried to get through a Miami International Airport security checkpoint contained jewelry. His claim was later disputed by the police department that investigated the incident.

"I had earrings in it and I had jewelry in it," Vick said of the 20 oz. Aquafina water bottle, which was red flagged at the security checkpoint because liquid containers of that size are banned from airport travel. "They took the bottle. I don't know what they did with the bottle. I guess they were trying to, I don't want to say frame me, but at the same time look at what I had to go through."

"That's the first we've heard of that," Det. Nelda Fonticella, spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Police Department, said when asked if Vick was carrying jewelry in the bottle. "If he has any kind of problem with the way things were handled then he needs to talk to internal affairs.":nono:

When asked if there was any mention of jewelry during the investigation, Fonticella said: "Not that we know of at all or it would have been in the report.":142smilie :nono:

There is no mention of jewelry in the police report, in the statements provided by both security agents involved, in the case disposition memo from the Florida state attorney or any of the other documents obtained by the Journal-Constitution regarding the incident.:SIB

Falcons president and general manager Rich McKay said Thursday he has never spoken to Vick about the contents of the water bottle.

Thursday, Vick said new head coach Bobby Petrino "brushed it off" when the water bottle incident was discussed in the initial meeting.

One day after the incident, McKay described a 'stressful' meeting by saying, "I met with Michael this morning, the coach did, we clearly expressed our displeasure, had a pretty frank discussion about it."

In his first comments on the Jan. 18 incident, which prompted the police investigation, Vick denied he was carrying anything illegal. A police incident report claimed security agents detected a "dark particulant" and the odor of marijuana from the bottle, which Vick was reluctant to surrender.

"Nobody came out and said there were earrings inside the bottle, jewelry in the bottle. I was cordial. I gave the bottle to the lady [TSA security agent] and said 'If you want to keep it you can keep it.' The only reason I went through all that was because there was water at the top of [the bottle]. It was a stash box for my jewelry. That's what I told everybody but that wasn't written.

"Everything else was written about the smell and all that. I sat in the airport for another hour and 30 minutes, so if there was something they thought was wrong then they could have come and got me and we could have handled the situation accordingly right on the spot."

Vick did not say there was jewelry in the bottle until Thursday. McKay, who addressed the incident the next day, never said there was jewelry in the hidden compartment.

Vick was not charged in the incident after the Metro-Dade Crime Lab tested the particulant and reported "no drug found." The crime lab refused to reveal the method of testing. When asked for a copy of the airport surveillance video of the incident under the state's public records law, the Miami-Dade Police Department claimed its copy of the video was destroyed. TSA would not release its copy of the video, citing national security concerns.

Though Vick spoke of not having his side of the story told, he refused multiple interview requests by the Journal-Constitution. He was asked about it last week by the Journal-Constitution and he refused to say what was in the hidden compartment.

"There really wasn't anything I could say," Vick said. "When it first happened nobody waited for the results to come back. Everybody just said this, wrote that. 'He's a thug. He does this. He does that. He's not right. He shouldn't be in Atlanta.'

"How do you think that made me feel? That was tough on me. That was tough on my family and friends because we knew those accusations weren't right. I said to myself why even say anything? At the time people were not going to believe me. I just wanted to wait for the results to come back and let the smoke clear :142smilie and get my head together and enjoy my offseason. It's over. I was cleared and I was happy about that.

"I'm not stupid. I'm not crazy. I would never do anything like that."

Vick said he laughed at jokes made of the incident by television comics. The outpouring of support he received, especially from Petrino, helped him get through some of the backlash, he said.

"It's funny because that was the first day I had to meet him and I had to go through that with him," said Vick, who was catching a flight from Miami to Atlanta to meet Petrino when the incident occurred. "He brushed it off. He talked about my family and football and what he thought I needed to do. That was uplifting for me because he didn't harp about what I was going through."

Vick also said the public reaction has been far more positive than negative.

"It has me under the microscope a little bit more even though I was cleared of everything," Vick said. "People treat me the same way. It's almost like people love me even more. They embrace me even more because I went through a situation where I didn't do anything wrong."
............................................................

Now the cops are calling him a stone faced lie:142smilie

I thought Petrino would be able to make Vick just keep his lips closed, but looks luck he makes his own way with public opinion.

I ate at Vicks restaurant and it gave me the runs.

Now that Mike will be able to audible at the line and call his own plays here?s one that he may feel comfortable with. Joe runs a post to the basketball goal, Michael runs a square-out at the back of the Chevy, White and Finn just go deeeeep, the rest of the guys block and as soon as the defense counts to 10 Mississippi Mike runs!!
