'This scares everybody ? the fact that we can't make this well stop flowing,' an official says. Some hope lies with a new maneuver to cap the leak.

By Margot Roosevelt and Louis Sahagun, Los Angeles Times

BP acknowledged the failure Saturday of its latest "top kill" operation to tamp down oil gushing from its blown-out well, and launched a new interim effort to contain the flow.

"After three full days, we have been unable to overcome the flow from the well, so we now believe it is time to move on to another option," said BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles at a news conference with federal officials in Robert, La.

On the course!
I have asked this question for weeks:

"When will the government freeze BPs assests, and step in to fix this mess?"

If your house was on fire, and you were trying to put it out but failing in a huge fashion, and then other houses started to catch on fire, but you told the fire department, "No, no.....we'll get this thing under control"........I'm pretty sure that would never stand.

jindal wants to build some berms to block the oil from reaching the wetlands...and wants some tankers allowed in the area to lay booms and start vacuuming the oil...maybe even burn some off...

but the feds won`t give him the thumbs up....it`s their call...it happened so far offshore,it`s the federal govt`s jurisdiction, from what i`m reading....

better get moving before it`s too late...

very sad...

Odd vibe down here.........undertones of helplessness are running through the area. I am curious what Ageecee is seeing out west.

We do not hear the truth from BP, we here same ole chit from O. BP adds unskilled labor pools on the run to areas that are about to be toured. Even then, there is virtually no activity. Google Carville's last trip out there.... it's a travesty.

Local politicians are unable to hold back tears..... Jindal, who is bought & paid for in his own right, is simply asking for more state/ local authority to get this rolling.....

Here
Starting to look more and more that it won't be stopped until a second well is drilled.

The gov step in and fix mess???---When has gov fixed anything?

I would imagine BP along with other oil companies have collectivly put their heads together and have more knowledge in this field than all others put together.

I can tell what Gov solution will be-not a fix of problem--but a tax they can reap from it.

I certainly believe BP and oil companies should be held responsible--but 100% of pay go directly to "their" cleaning up mess and compensating those affected--and not be dilluted by huge % of funds going to gov to be squandered in clean up and attorneys lining their pockets.

hopefully after this oil co will be reluctantant to drill at such depths they have so little control--and instead be allowed to drill in places (like alaska) where such consequences are nill.

Hopefully, they will go to jail along with everyone who allowed them to drill without a working worst case back up plan. This is a disgrace.

BP had warning signs before Gulf blast: panel
WASHINGTON

CORRECTED - BP chose riskier, cheaper casing for well-NYT
Thu, May 27 2010

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - BP Plc told congressional investigators on Tuesday that pressure tests on a drill pipe showed a fundamental mistake hours before the deadly explosion that caused the Gulf of Mexico oil leak, a memo released by two congressmen showed.

Gulf Oil Spill

The memo by Representatives Henry Waxman and Bart Stupak, who were briefed by BP about the progress of its internal investigation, also said problems were found in equipment meant to provide fail-safe protection against a blow out.

A BP investigator indicated to the lawmakers that the fundamental mistake may have been made because heavy pressure on the drill line of 1,400 pounds per square inch (98 kg per square cm) was an "indicator of a very large abnormality."

The memo did not indicate who made decisions after the problem was found. BP and Transocean, the owner and operator of the rig, had supervisors on the rig when it exploded.

About two hours before the explosion that killed 11 workers and caused the leak that is still gushing oil, the rig team was satisfied a test on another line was successful, the BP investigator said.

BP would not comment on the memo.

A Transocean spokesman blamed BP for the disaster, saying, "A well is constructed and completed the same way a house is built -- at the direction of the owner and the architect. And in this case, that's BP."

The congressional memo said BP data showed there were numerous problems with production equipment. Nearly five hours before the explosion, an unexpected loss of fluid was observed in the well's riser pipe. That suggests "there were leaks in the annual preventer," a rubber gasket in the blowout preventer, the memo said.

Waxman and Stupak chair the House Energy and Commerce Committee's investigative subcommittee, which has reviewed over 105,000 pages of internal documents from BP, rig owner Transocean Ltd, Halliburton Co, and blowout preventer manufacturer Cameron.

The memo said the BP investigation has also raised concerns about the maintenance history, modification, and inspection of the blowout preventer.

Officials from BP and Transocean are scheduled to testify before congressional panels on Thursday.

According to BP, there also were three warning signs of problems with unwanted flow in the well starting 51 minutes before the explosion. About 18 minutes before the explosion abnormal pressure leaks of the fluids known as mud meant to keep oil and gas capped were observed and the pump was shut down.

"The data suggests that the crew may have attempted mechanical interventions at that point to control the pressure, but soon after, the flow out and pressure increased dramatically and the explosion took place," the memo said.

BP probably knew this was a probem a year ago.

They tried to take the cheap way out :scared

now that the cat`s outta` the bag, how`s bout we start doing something to mitigate the damage?....

platitudes won`t do it...keeping "our boot`s on b.p.`s neck" won`t do it...

maybe start containment operations while they`re figuring out a way to stop the leak?...how zat for thinking outside the box?..

it happened outside the state`s territorial waters..it`s the fed`s responsibility to take the lead...

they had no problem doing it with every other damned "crisis"...the banks..the auto copanies..healthcare...

why the hands off appraoch until the media finally got off their asses and embarrassed them?...

what did emanuel say?..."never waste a good crisis"....

stop playing basketball...stop the memorial day vacation...stop with the gays in the military stuff..get your fricking priorities in order...at least .until the oil spill is being dealt with...

wow they sure did know

the ironic part is the day of the explosion they had BP officials there to celebrate 7 years of safety.

Then bam

That guy on the rig is a living hero to be able to relate that story.

BP is chit.

Yes you can, and in fact that is what we are hoping to accomplish now.

They might contain some of it but it will eventually just overwhelm any containment efforts.

Like the guy in the 60 min interview said

Stop think and dont do anything stupid

I say start on the relief well now, and contain what you can while we wait 2 months for the relief well to be completed.
