Brent Johnson, St. Louis Blues - Johnson will be the starter for Thursday's game against the Canucks, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The St. Louis goalie situation will be one worth watching over the rest of the regular season as Johnson and Chris Osgood will battle evenly for playing time. Whoever performs better will probably be appointed as the team's #1 goalie for the playoffs. What makes it interesting is that Johnson plays more or less like a younger version of Osgood.

Miikka Kiprusoff, San Jose Sharks - Kiprusoff will be the starter for Thursday's game against the Mighty Ducks, reports the San Jose Mercury.

Martin Gerber, Anaheim Mighty Ducks - Gerber is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Sharks.

Pasi Nurminen, Atlanta Thrashers - Nurminen is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Canadiens.

Jeff Hackett, Boston Bruins - Hackett is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Devils.

Roman Turek, Calgary Flames - Turek is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Maple Leafs.

Kevin Weekes, Carolina Hurricanes - Weekes is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Flyers.

Patrick Roy, Colorado Avalanche - Roy is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Blue Jackets.

Marc Denis, Columbus Blue Jackets - Denis is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Avalanche.

Tommy Salo, Edmonton Oilers - Salo is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Islanders.

Jose Theodore, Montreal Canadiens - Theodore is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Thrashers.

Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils - Brodeur is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Bruins.

Garth Snow, New York Islanders - Snow is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Oilers.

Mike Dunham, New York Rangers - Dunham is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Senators.

Patrick Lalime, Ottawa Senators - Lalime is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Rangers.

Roman Cechmanek, Philadelphia Flyers - Cechmanek is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Hurricanes.

Ed Belfour, Toronto Maple Leafs - Belfour is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Flames.

Peter Skudra, Vancouver Canucks - Skudra is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Blues.

Cristobal Huet, Los Angeles Kings - Huet will get his first NHL start sometime this weekend, reports the LA Times. Coach Andy Murray said he is not sure which game Huet will start, but check back later and hopefully we will have a more concrete answer.

Dan Cloutier, Vancouver Canucks - Cloutier, out with a sprained knee, only practiced for 15 minutes yesterday and is still several days away from returning. He was able to go down on his knees to test the butterfly style he plays and hopes to go through a full practice within the next two days. If he does and suffers no setbacks, he could return soon thereafter.

Evgeni Nabokov, San Jose Sharks - Nabokov is suffering from a chest injury which has been giving him problems for a while now. He won't dress for Thursday's game against the Mighty Ducks with Vesa Toskala being called up as a replacement. At least now we know why Nabokov hasn't been starting many of the Sharks' games lately; we thought he was in coach Ron Wilson's doghouse.

Reinhard Divis, St. Louis Blues - Okay, this really has no fantasy implications but hear this one out: Divis, who if you remember was the Blues third string goalie who got injured at the beginning of the year and consequently missed almost the entire year with an abdominal injury, finally made it back onto the ice earlier this month. But the good news didn't last as he's back on the shelf with the Blues' minor league affiliate team after getting bit by a spider of all things. We kid you not.

slam.canoe.ca sez:

"General manager/coach Pat Quinn indicated that former Calgary Flame Trevor Kidd likely will get the start tonight. "

also this note: "Toronto tough guy Tie Domi has completed serving his three-game suspension for his March 4 mugging of Ottawa's Magnus Arvedson and is eligible to return to duty. Fellow ruffian Darcy Tucker has two games to go on his sentence.........Tuesday's deadline trades give the Leafs a whopping seven former Flames as Doug Gilmour and Phil Housley join Robert Reichel, Jonas Hoglund, Gary Roberts, Wade Belak and Trevor Kidd. "

Tony Amonte, Philadelphia Flyers - Amonte practiced with his new teammates on Wednesday and will be in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Hurricanes. He will play alongside long time friend Jeremy Roenick and Marty Murray as part of the team's #1 line.

John LeClair, Philadelphia Flyers - LeClair has been upgraded to questionable and will be a game-time decision for Wednesday's game against the Hurricanes. If he gets official medical clearance and feels good, he will be in the lineup and will play on a line with Mark Recchi and Michal Handzus. We assume that means Sami Kapanen will play with Keith Primeau and this is all with Simon Gagne and Justin Williams still out. If you don't see where we're going with this - it's pretty obvious the Flyers will have a scary looking offensive lineup when healthy.

Anson Carter, New York Rangers - Even though he has yet to meet his new team, Carter will be in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Senators. The New York Newsday reports that he will probably play on a line with Petr Nedved. The Rangers other prominent pairings will be as follows: Bobby Holik will play with Eric Lindros and Jamie Lundmark and Mark Messier will center Russians Alexei Kovalev and Pavel Bure in what could be a highly productive line.

Gary Roberts, Toronto Maple Leafs - Roberts tweaked his groin during Monday's game against the Oilers and will not play on Thursday against the Flames. He did say that he expects to be fully recovered for Tuesday's game against the Canucks.

Mikael Renberg, Toronto Maple Leafs - Renberg suffered a strained shoulder in an "off-ice workout" on Tuesday and is listed as doubtful for Thursday's game against the Flames. He is going to take the morning skate and hopes to be in the lineup so if you really need his services, perhaps keep him active just in case.

Jaromir Jagr, Washington Capitals - Jagr was back on the ice Wednesday but his problematic wrist was still an issue, preventing him from taking part in any shooting drills. The pain has subsided though and Jagr will practice today, with hopes that he can return over the weekend but according to coach Bruce Cassidy, he probably won't be back until early next week.

Scott Young, Dallas Stars - The NHL suspended Young for two games for an "attempt-to-injure" crosscheck during Tuesday's win against the Blue Jackets. It was the first suspension of the veteran winger's 15-year career but he will be eligible to return for games starting next week.

Bill Muckalt, Minnesota Wild - Muckalt told the Minneapolis Star-Tribine that his dislocated and surgically repaired shoulder is at about 40% healed, but he nonetheless is shooting to return by the end of the regular season. Muckalt is thus far only able to participate in non-contact drills with his teammates because he experiences pain doing certain shoulder movements.

Jozef Stumpel, Boston Bruins - Stumpel got "dinged" in Tuesday's loss to the Senators and left practice early yesterday as a result. However, he plans on playing in Thursday's game against the Devils, according to the Boston Herald.

Scott Gomez, New Jersey Devils - Gomez, a healthy scratch for the Devils last game on Tuesday, will be in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Bruins according to the New Jersey Star-Ledger.

Oleg Tverdovsky, New Jersey Devils - Tverdovsky, a healthy scratch for the Devils last game on Tuesday, will be back in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Bruins according to the New Jersey Star Ledger.

The Tipster

For games on Thursday, March 13, 2003

By PHILIPPE DOUCET -- SLAM! Sports

RECORD:
OVERALL RECORD: 276-200-54
AGAINST SPREAD: 304-222-4

NY RANGERS @ OTTAWA
The Rangers acquired Edmonton Oilers leading scorer Anson Carter in a four-player trade March 11. New York also got rookie defenseman Ales Pisa, and sent forward Radek Dvorak and defenceman Cory Cross to Edmonton in a swap completed shortly before the NHL trading deadline. New York has won three of their last five games. Mike Dunham is 0-2-0 against the Sens this season and has allowed nine goals. The Senators are all set for the playoffs. They have won four straight games. Daniel Alfredsson has seven points in only three games versus the Rangers this season. Patrick Lalime is 3-0-0 against the Manhattan boys, who are 2-1-1 in their last four visits to the Corel Centre. Nobody controls money more than a bunch of politicians, not even the Rangers.
SENS 3, RANGERS 2

MONTREAL @ ATLANTA
In their first game after Tuesday's trade deadline, the Canadiens shut out the Panthers 4-0. Montreal sits only three points back of the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. Jose Theodore is 1-2-0 against the Thrashers and is only 3-9-1 since the All-Star Break. The Thrashers actually won a game on Tuesday, shocking the Devils 3-2. Dany Heatley has four goals in his last four games and has three points against Montreal this season. Pasi Nurminen gets the start in net and is a perfect 2-0-0 versus the Habs. Pick the determined Montreal Canadiens to serve some fren...uh...freedom fries.
HABS 4, THRASHERS 3

TORONTO @ CALGARY
There is not one team in the league that can say they improved their lineups more than the Maple Leafs did at deadline time. Not only did they add Owen Nolan and Glen Wesley earlier this week, but they went as far as re-acquiring fan favourite Doug Gilmour from Montreal. 'Killer' has 116 goals with the Leafs. Trevor Kidd will start tonight and is 1-0-0 versus the Flames this season. The Flames traded veteran center Rob Niedermayer to the Mighty Ducks on March 11, for some minor-leaguers. Calgary had its four-game win streak halted on Tuesday as they lost to a depleted Edmonton squad. Roman Turek is 0-2-0 versus the Leafs this season and has not beaten them since the 2000-2001 season. Now is the time to 'Be-Leaf' as Yonge Street is already closing down for the parade.
LEAFS 5, FLAMES 1

NY ISLANDERS @ EDMONTON
The Islanders made two moves at the March 11 trade deadline, acquiring center Justin Papineau from the Blues for goaltender Chris Osgood and landing defenceman Janne Niinimaa from the Oilers for forward Brad Isbister. Niinimaa, 27, has four goals and 24 assists in 63 games this season with Edmonton. The Islanders have put their playoff spot in jeopardy by losing four in a row. Garth Snow is 3-3-1 and Thursday nights. The Oilers, despite losing leading scorer Anson Carter, still managed to beat Calgary on Tuesday. They have now won four of their last five games. Tommy Salo is 4-1-0 in his last five and has allowed eight goals. Go with the rip-off artists in this one.
ISLES 3, OILERS 2

ST. LOUIS @ VANCOUVER
The Blues' seemingly endless search for a goalie ended March 11 when they acquired veteran Chris Osgood from the Islanders. In 37 games this season, Osgood was 17-14-4 with a 2.92 goals-against average and .894 save percentage. He has missed much of the season with an ankle injury but returned last week. St. Louis has won five of its last six games. Vancouver snapped their three game winless streak on Tuesday, beating the Islanders 4-3. Todd Bertuzzi has nine points in five games. Dan Cloutier is expected back tonight after being out with a leg injury. He is 7-0-1 since the All-Star break. Unless the Blues play the right tune, hand the 'Nucks a guitar and let them rock n' roll.
CANUCKS 4, BLUES 2

NEW JERSEY @ BOSTON
The Devils were shocked 3-2 by the Thrashers on Tuesday. New Jersey has now lost three of its last four games. Pat Burns chose to bench Scott Gomez, who has only 10 goals all season. Thanks God the Devils have Martin Brodeur, who is 2-0-0 versus the Bruins this season and has allowed only two goals. The Bruins have lost two straight games for the ninth time this season. However, Joe Thornton has seven points in five games and has scored twice against the Devils this season. New Jersey is 3-2 in their last five games played Bobby Orr land. One can only imagine when Burns and his crew will raise some hell.
DEVILS 5, BRUINS 4

CAROLINA @ PHILADELPHIA
Someone stop the Canes, they are on FIRE! Carolina has won four straight games after going winless in their previous nine games. Kevin Weekes is back in net tonight and is 3-2-0 in his last five games. In three games versus the Flyers this season, Weekes is 0-1-2. The Flyers acquired three-time 40-goal scorer Tony Amonte from the Coyotes on March 10. He has 13 goals and 23 assists in his first season with Phoenix. Philadelphia has lost three straight games. Roman Cechmanek has allowed only four goals in three games versus Carolina. Eat your heart out 'Beezer'; Cechmanek and Weekes will always be respected.
FLYERS 3, CANES 2

COLORADO @ COLUMBUS
The Avalanche look ready to take the Stanley Cup back from Detroit. They have won nine of their last 14 games and have added Bates Battaglia to their lineup. Patrick Roy is 2-0-1 against the Jackets this season and has allowed only six goals. The future Hall of Famer is 12-2-1 since the All-Star Break. Columbus might as well pack it in for the season as they have lost 10 of their last 13 games. Ray Whitney leads the team in scoring but has been held pointless against the Avs this season. Marc Denis has allowed 12 goals to Colorado in three games. Easily pick the Avalanche to trample Columbus.
AVS 4, JACKETS 1

SAN JOSE @ ANAHEIM
San Jose is looking for its first victory since trading Owen Nolan and Bryan Marchment away earlier this week. They have lost three straight games and five of their last six. Teemu Selanne has agreed to stay with the team but was clearly disrupted by all the rumours, recording only two points in seven games. He has two goals against Anaheim this season. The Mighty Ducks got an immediate contribution by newly acquired Steve Thomas last night, as he scored twice to beat the Hawks 5-2. Jean-Sebastien Giguere is 1-2-0 against the Sharks this season and 5-2-0 on Thursday nights. Question remains, is he 'hot or not'? Definitely NOT hot enough to move on.
