All Madjackers:
Well this friday i am making my yearly excursion to the Iruna region of Espana for the San Fermin Fiesta to run with the bulls. Made extremely popular around the world by Ernest Hemingway, this is a party that should not be missed. This will be my 3rd straight year going and believe me; it never gets old.
The actual town of Pamplona is not all that big; although every bar and place to get a drink is packed with partygoers of all ages. Hotels are tough to come by, cleanliness is at an all time low but this doesnt take away from the atmosphere at all. People go to this town to party and have fun, and thats exactly what you get.
The running of the bulls takes place at 8am in the morning, the route is primarily uphill through the very narrow streets of the center of the city and it ends up when the bulls run into the ring. The entire run time varies, they blow off a rocket at 8am which symbolizes that the first bull is out of the corral at the bottom of the route, followed by a second rocket that tells the crowd that all 6 bulls are in the streets on their way up. Following the bulls are 6-8 steer that help guide the bulls along and keep them moving, this is done in case one of the bulls goes sh*tzo and finds himself alone, which still happens, and that is when it gets dangerous. Bulls are herd animals and they get scared when they are seperated from the rest of the pack. The bulls then get extra aggressive and look to take out any one of the drunk runners in the streets.
Finally when the last of the toros are in the bullring, they are guided into the pens where they are seperated; later on in the afternoon will be fought in front of the packed ring. After these bulls are secure in their pens, they release baby bulls into the ring where the crowd of runners gathered after the run can test their bravery against these bulls. They are not as dangerous as the tips of their horns are padded and they are not nearly as big.
By now its a little bit after 9am and the streets are once again packed with people looking for that next sangria or cerveza. This goes on from July 6th-July14th; everyday, nonstop........believe me the party is NON-stop. Depending on how you feel about bullfights, during the fiesta, in total some 50 bulls are slaughtered at the hands of matadors and rojeanadores (think i got that right).
if you are interested in watching this go down on tv, i know the OLN network will have all the days runnings and happenings airing later on this month when its actually over and when Lance Armstrong hopefully gets his 6th in a row. You can follow this on the web at www.sanfermin.com, there is an english icon you can click if you like.

In all i believe there have been 15 deaths, several Americans in the encierro. There are several rules, most notably no woman can run, although none of these rules are much paid attention to. The attitude is if you are brave or stupid enough to get in those streets by around 7:45, then you are responsible for the consequences.

hope everyone had a safe and fun holiday weekend, my fun is just about to begin........
wish me luck

yes the person from Roselle Park was seriously injured during the 2003 Running, she was laid up in bed for quite a while and it is my understanding that she was gored pretty good.

ltw2, have fun but be careful. can't say I would be brave enough to try that. four knee surgeries in 7 years have slowed me up a little. make sure you let us know all about it when you get back.

good luck, :wall:

hey guys, ill be heading out of here in two days to catch up with the fiesta but it looks like the running got off to a great start with minor injuries

Blows and more blows

Eight injured suffering contussion taken to hospital

The first running of the bulls of Sanfermin 2004, with bulls from the Cadiz breeder, Torrestrella, turned out to be a fast clean run. There were no injuries caused by gorings. The streets were still very wet when the rocket went off, due to the heavy downpour of rain which lasted through most of the night and the slippery pavement was expected to make the run more hazardous. However, only eight people have suffered concussion at different stretches of the run, and none of them is seriously hurt.

The run started rather slowly as the bell-oxen were slow to react to the rocket and the opening of the pen gates, but then they galloped out into Santo Domingo street with the bulls running close behind them. Very quickly a black-colored bull got in front of the bunch and he led them along, making lunges to its left side with its horns, but except for causing some concussion to a runner it seems that nobody was caught by its horns. In total only five bulls ran (instead of the usual six) and the other four stayed in a compact group behind the bell-oxen. A lot of runners slipped up on the wet ground over this stretch.

The bunch of animals entered the Ayuntamiento square and Mercaderes still in a fairly compact pack. The leading black bull crashed into the fencing at Marcaderes and Estafeta corner and slipped to the ground and got left somewhat behind the others. The only dun-colored bull in the pack now took the lead in front of the bunch while another of the black bulls behind slipped and knocked down some runners in its path. On this first stretch of Estafeta street a lot of runners slipped and fell, but without suffering any serious harm, it would seem. Here, the leading dun-colored bull slipped and a runner coming behind stumbled right over the animal and sprawled in front of it. But the bull did not pay much attention to the fallen body and it got up and continued on its way. From here on, the animals now ran somewhat more dispersed, with a black bull leading the way accompanied by a couple of bell oxen. Then came three other black bulls behind them and the dun-colored bull brought up the rear along with the remaining bell-oxen. Some good running was seen in Estafeta from the runners who managed to get close in to the horns of the bulls. Meanwhile many runners continued to slip and fall along the stretch.

At the final stretch leading into the bull ring, the bunch continued to run somewhat disbanded, but the animals all ran directly into the bullring and headed quickly for the pens. The whole run took just 2min. 32sec.

This run took a relatively short time period from my experience. hopefully the luck continues. i will be on the cobblestones in pamplona on sunday the 11th thru the 14th.

PAMPLONA, Spain ? Several people were trampled but not seriously hurt Wednesday as thousands took part in the first bull run of the San Fermin festival, dashing along the slippery cobblestone streets of this ancient city in northern Spain.

"Running ahead of bulls is life and I wanted to feel alive," said Ray Sabbatini, 36, of Wisconsin, who suffers from multiple sclerosis and was accompanied by his friend Dennis Rodman, the retired National Basketball League star.

"I wasn't afraid," said Rodman, wearing sunglasses and still looking muscular, tattooed and larger than life as he ate ox tail stew at a cafe following the two-minute run. "I like strong emotions."

None of the runners was gored, and only four injuries were serious enough to require treatment. Two bulls skidded and fell, as did some runners after a night of rain left the streets slick.

"So far there aren't serious injuries, but there's a lot of people with little experience and we have a lot of work," said Mikel Eusa of the Red Cross.

Policeman Jose Ramon said he prevented two Australians from taking part out of concern for their safety: "They had a lot to drink and I didn't let them by."

For all the hype, the actual run is just 900 yards and lasts little more than two minutes from the starting corral to the finish in the bull ring.

But for many of the thousands of tourists from all over the world, it's the sprint of their lives.

"I didn't sleep all night," said Tom Langhurst, 20, a student from Swisher, Iowa. "I was very nervous but now I feel I'm on top of the world."

Runners dressed in the traditional white shirts and trousers with red scarves. Many ran ahead of the five bulls from the Torrestrella ranch, staying as close as possible without risking getting gored.

"It's pure Adrenalin. I can't live without it," said Pascual Rubert, a car mechanic from Castellon, Spain.

Others ran alongside, sometimes with a hand on the bull's rump for balance. Then there were those who stayed safely behind, sharing the thrill if not the actual danger.

The bull runs continue daily, starting at 8 a.m., through July 14.

The San Fermin festival, renowned for its all-night street parties, dates back to the late 16th century. But it gained worldwide fame from Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel, "The Sun Also Rises."

The bulls were originally run through town to get them to the ring for bullfights held each afternoon of the festival. But over the years, it has become popular to run in front of the beasts.

Overcrowding has increased the danger of the event. Since record-keeping began in 1924, 13 people have been killed at the festival. The last fatality was an American killed in 1995.

looks like today's running was similar to yesterdays.

Thrilling fast run

Nobody was gored at the second bull running

The second running of the bulls of this year?s Sanfermin fiestas, with bulls from the Cebada Gago ranch, provided a thrilling fast run. There were a higher number of runners than at yesterday?s event. None of them received any gorings from the bulls although there were several close calls. This breed of bull from the province of Cadiz has a name for being one of the most dangerous bull breeds brought to Pamplona for the fiestas. The bulls ran the whole course of almost 900 meters in 2:28.

The bunch came out at a fast pace from the pens in Santo Domingo and four of the bulls quickly led the rest of the animals forward as they lunged at the runners with their horns on both the right and left side. The fast pace continued into the City Hall Square and here three bulls charged ahead and two of them slipped up just as they approached the curve at Mercaderes, causing some moments of tension. The other bull that had moved ahead charged and fell at the fencing on the corner of Mercaderes and the rest of the pack coming behind did likewise. This bull got left behind from the others and once back on his feet it shaped up as if to charge a pile of runners who had gathered on the corner of Estafeta Street. But luckily, it was distracted by one of the bell-oxen and it continued up Estafeta running behind the bell-oxen.

In Estafeta the bunch ran a bit more separated, with three bulls leading the field together and the others running behind one by one. Luckily, none of the bulls charged any of the many fallen runners along the length of this street.

At the entrance to the stretch leading down to the bullring, the fifth bull running alone made to gore a runner who had fallen on the right side. But luckily, it did not seem to get him and it charged into the fencing without any further consequences.

The bulls ran into the bullring one by one and were quickly led away to the pens without creating any further moments of tension.

A side note, retired NBA player Dennis Rodman is participating in this years runs to help raise money for charity. Ill try to meet up with him and pound down some of that good sangria when i get there this weekend.

from the third day runnings' notes........looks like the bulls didnt get enough sleep or werent fed in the morning because they came out raging!!!! like i said, it gets real bad when they seperate themselves.....

Panic at the callej?n

Four gored and five runners more taken off to hospital

The third running of the bulls of this year?s Sanfermin fiestas, with bulls from the Nu?ez de Cuvillo breed, has been the most thrilling and dangerous so far and it ended up with four runners wounded by the horns of the bulls and another five also taken off to hospital.

The bulls kept together in the initial stages of the first stretch of the run in Santo Domingo Street, but the gap between the bulls gradually lengthened as they moved along this stretch. There were many dangerous moments as the separated bulls made several lunges with their horns along the left stretch of the street. Many runners tripped and fell along the stretch.

At the City Hall stretch and into Mercaderes any semblance of the bulls staying in a bunch was completely broken. The dun-colored bull in front slipped and fell at the corner of Mercaderes and he charged into the fencing as did another three bulls coming up behind. Here the most dangerous incident took place as the same runner was hit three times by three different bulls. After receiving a goring to his leg from the first bull, the runner attempted to get up and was knocked over by another bull coming fast from behind. The same runner once again attempted to get up and was charged from behind by yet another bull. He was taken off to hospital with a goring of some 15 centimeters to his right thigh.

In Estafeta Street the bulls all ran loose and separated and there were several moments of high tension, with the bulls lunging with their horns along both sides of this street. Many runners were tripping up and falling over. Some runners managed to get close in front of the horns of the bulls and some fine running could be appreciated. At the stretch leading down into the entrance to the ring the two bulls bringing up the rear, a dun-colored bull and a black colored one, both halted and shaped up to turn back the way they had come, creating some moments of real panic. The dun-colored bull charged the fencing on its right side before turning back into the entrance to the bullring. On the left side of the entrance to the ring there was a bit of a pile-up of runners but, luckily, the bulls did not directly charge into these runners who had fallen.

Once within the ring, these same final two bulls created difficulties as they did not want to enter the pens. After several attempts they were successfully led to their pens by the keepers who used their capes to entice the animals to enter. The whole run was completed in 4:42 seconds.

this is my last post in the states, i dont know how many people are following the runnings, but i will keep you in the loop when i am over there. ill give you the first hand scoop from sunday to at least tuesdays' runs, and maybe wednesday(the last day of the fiesta)

Pamplona, Spain --
people -- including two Americans, one from Dunwoody, Ga. -- were gored Friday during the running for the bulls at this year's San Fermin festival, officials said.

The third day's run also was marred by injuries to at least five other participants. In the two previous days of the popular festival, there have been no serious injuries.

John Doyle, 22, of Dunwoody, was gored in the groin and would probably be hospitalized for a day or two, said Dr. Wilfredo Soler of Virgen del Camino Hospital.

The other injured American was a 22-year-old man from Louisiana who was gored in the left knee, Soler said. The American requested that his name not be disclosed.

The worst injured was Juan Vallbona Serra, 23, of Sabadell, Spain, who was struck by a bull, which then fell on him. As he struggled free, two other bulls hit him in the back and side, lifting him into the air.

He suffered a 6-inch gash in his right thigh, said Begona Lopez, a spokeswoman for Pamplona City Hall.

A 58-year-old Spaniard was gored in the left forearm, according to news reports.

Runners were knocked off their feet, trampled or pushed against barricades all along the 900-yard route on narrow cobblestone streets from a corral to a bullring.

The bulls -- one weighing 1,300 pounds -- charged out of the corral faster Friday than on preceding days, with several going off on their own rather than lumbering along as a pack.

There were so many runners that it seemed impossible for the bulls to squeeze through the crowd. But the mass of people -- moving just a little faster than the bulls -- repeatedly parted just in time to let the animals pass safely through.

About a dozen bulls -- some docile, some bred for fighting -- tried to avoid hitting the runners and appeared to concentrate on staying upright as their hooves clattered along the uneven, slippery cobblestone.

Most made it to the bullring about 2 1/2 minutes after the start of the run. But two had to be coaxed into the ring and the run didn't officially end until about four minutes after the beasts charged out of the corral.

The festival is dedicated to Pamplona's patron saint.
...............................................................................................................

After much consideration I do not believe that this is something I would
care to ever participate in. Might be ok to go and watch though.
