I don't know if things have changed over the last few years, but when I was on a cruise about 5 years ago, the answer was NO.

US customs allows 100 cigars up to $800 in value duty free (excepting illegal cubans, of course). My buddies toss in box or 2 or Cubans and have had few problems. Once in a while they get confiscated if found and tossed in garbage. US customs haven't prosecuted anyone on this for decades.
To be perfectly safe, take the identifying bands off the cigars and put cigars in plain, or other brand, box. Carry the bands separate, or mail back separate....and be very sure to get your cubans from a most reputable dealer--fakes ones are easier to find than genuine ones! And be prepared for some occasional shoddy quality.

Just take the bands off. I did in Punta Cana and the customs agent held them up and told everyone, This is how you import Cubans... The men behind me immediately started to go into their luggage.
Of note, look at the bands. If the label is not perfect, the cigar is fake. Also, before you buy boxes, buy one, and unroll it. If its short tobacco it is fake. Cigars are made with long leaves and are of top quality. Don't buy if they are suspect.
There is no clear box collector's items. If the cigars are in clear cases, it isn't from manufacturer. Cigars are stores to avoid light etc. Common sense. So don't be a sucker with any of these (they were everywhere)

Get my email from Jack if you'd like a direct purchase site online. I'm a member of Cigar Pass (Woodson) and there are several legit ditributors that I would recommend however, would never publically say for obvious reasons...

Thanks for all the good tips. I am leaving next week so I will follow up with this and let you all know how it went.
That is of course unless Pug starts another thread about a guy and his wife getting arrested coming through customs with some cigars.
