A Holy Cross brother that has been a friend of our family for many years got me two tickets to the Oct 20th BYU-Notre Dame game.....my best friend will fly in from Maryland and meet me in Chicago.....we are going to rent a car and drive out to South bend.....I did this back in 2006 and saw the Purdue-ND game....last time we stayed in Valpariso because their were no hotels near South Bend...I forgot how far it was? Any ideas where we should stay closer to ND...also we have early flights out of Chicago on Sunday AM....maybe just stay in chicago and drive early sat am to south bend and come back late after the game....the game is a 3.30 game...just looking for some suggestions from some of you that live out there....how far is the chicago to south bend drive??? I remember getting off the highway and getting lost in a detour..we had to drive thru Gary,Ind....that was unreal..unless we hit a bad section, the South Bronx looked better...
Would appreciate any suggestions....think we might fly into Chicago on thur and spend the day there....last time we did this in 2006 we got to see the Cubs play the Rockies at Wrigly Field...that was great....

Yesterday school started in NY....it was the 1st day I didn't go to work in 38 years.....was kind of down since my family is down in Austin.....but got 15 text messages from teachers complaining about their new schedules, etc...two texts from 2 crazy high profile parents complaining about their kids and another from the athletic director about scheduling problems......the teachers all planned this to try to make me feel good and see I'm not missing this part of the retirement....it was nice and made me laugh...then last nite got another 10 calls from other teachers asking me how my 1st day of retirement was...that is the part I'll miss ..the people....everyone have a good week......." everyday is a snow day for me".....Bohawk and Hawkeye can attest to that.....

Valpo is about an hour away from South Bend. The drive from/to Chicago on game day will be about 2.5 - 3 hours.

If you are flying in a day early, might as well stay in Chicago in my mind as opposed to keep checking in and out of hotels on such a short trip.

checked some other schedules if you are coming in early. Blackhawks have a home game that Thursday and the Bulls have a preseason home game that Friday.

Poon....thanks for the idea...will love to see the Blackhawks..going to see if I can get tickets for the Friday night game...didn't realize Chicago is that far from ND...I'll figure something out...maybe stay just outside of Chicago on the South bend side...think its on the east end..I'll check it out on a map...hawkeye..like your suggestion....these guys are just busting my chops...do miss it though...I think its going to take awhile...was going to go to Vegas this week to get away from here...3 houses down from me another teacher Gene just retired. He taught 7th-8th history for 36 years....he was loading his van yesterday and we both starting laughing at each other...his wife was in the front seat...his off to Maine for 10 days going camping...and I'll be capping the Army-San Diego St game...take care

Box - you can make it to South Bend in 2 hours or a little less w/ no traffic. With a 3:30 game you could leave mid-morning to beat any traffic but coming back after the game you will hit a little regardless it would seem. You flying into O'Hare or Midway? Would probably be easier to do Midway if you are focussing on staying near the Southside to make your trip to and from South Bend easier.
