Gonzaga and Pepperdine will renew their rivalry on Wednesday night when the Waves host the Bulldogs in a West Coast Conference (WCC) game at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu beginning at 9 p.m.

The contest will be televised live nationally on ESPN with Terry Gannon and Doug Gottlieb calling the action. It marks the first ESPN telecast from Firestone Fieldhouse since Pepperdine played host to Houston back in December of 1982.

The game will be broadcast in Southern California on KPLS-AM 830 on a delayed basis beginning at 9:30 p.m. and live on the internet via the Pepperdine Athletics website with Al Epstein handling the play-by-play.

Pepperdine fans are encouraged to "Splash Firestone Fieldhouse Orange" for the game by wearing orange clothing, and more than 1,500 orange t-shirts will be distributed at the game.

Head coach Paul Westphal?s injury-riddled ballclub is currently 11-9 overall and 3-4 in WCC play. The Waves have lost four of their last six games beginning with a 92-72 loss to Gonzaga at the Martin Centre in Spokane on January 12. Pepperdine owns a sub-.500 league record for the first time since owning a 1-2 mark back in 1998.

Meanwhile, Gonzaga rolls into Malibu riding an eight-game winning streak. The Bulldogs are 16-5 overall and 7-0 in league play. Gonzaga holds a two and one-half game lead over both St. Mary?s (11-8 / 4-2) and San Diego (10-9 / 4-2) in the WCC standings.

Gonzaga has won 21 consecutive games against league opponents dating back to an 88-79 loss at Pepperdine last January. The streak includes three games at last year?s WCC Tournament in San Diego.

As a result of the winning streak, Gonzaga is inching its way back toward the national Top 25 polls. The Bulldogs are tied for the No. 31 spot in this week?s Associated Press listing and is No. 39 in the ESPN/USA Today poll.

Pepperdine completes its week-long Homecoming activities on Saturday night when the Waves host Portland at Firestone Fieldhouse beginning at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on a regional basis by Fox Sports West 2 with Bill Macdonald and Reggie Theus courtside.

Portland, 9-11 overall and 2-5 in league play, arrives in the Southland on Thursday night for a game at Loyola Marymount.

In addition to the injury-related problems, Pepperdine has also been plagued by poor defense. After 20 games, opponents are shooting 48.3 percent from the field. Last year, Pepperdine limited its opponents to 41.4 percent shooting, including a 38.8 percent mark during regular season league play.

Senior forward Jimmy Miggins continues to lead the Waves in scoring at 15.5 points a game. Sophomore guard Terrance Johnson adds 13.3 points a contest, followed by freshman guard Alex Acker (13.0) and senior forward Boomer Brazzle (12.8).

With last week?s sweep, Gonzaga head coach Mark
Few moved into the Top 10 for wins by a NCAA
fourth-year head coach. His 97 wins tie him for
seventh on the all-time chart with Dick Hunsaker of
Ball State (1990-93). Few needs one more victory to
tie Denny Crum of Louisville (1972-75) for sixth.
Everett Case of North Carolina State University
(1947-50) heads the list with 107 wins. Few is
currently 97-25 in his fourth year with the Bulldogs,
and is the all-time NCAA leader for wins by a thirdyear
head coach with 81.

Gonzaga has won 19 straight West Coast Conference
games in The Kennel, and since 1996 the Bulldogs are
49-4 in WCC home games. The last time Gonzaga lost two WCC home games in a season
was 1995 when the Bulldogs dropped back-to-back games to Santa Clara (73-68 in OT)
and Saint Mary?s (68-63). Santa Clara and San Diego are the only teams to beat the
Bulldogs more than once in The Kennel since 1995, each accomplishing the feat twice.

Junior guard Blake Stepp turned in perhaps the finest all-around weekend of the
season this year for a Bulldog with his performance last week against San Diego
and Santa Clara. He went 14-for-28 from the field, 12-of-21 from 3-point range (.571),
grabbed 9 rebounds, dished out 10 assists, had 2 turnovers and 6 steals while
scoring 47 points in 63 minutes. His assist/turnover ratio was 5:1.

Junior guard Tony Skinner is listed as doubtful for Wednesday after re-spraining his left
ankle Saturday against Santa Clara. Skinner, who sprained the ankle Jan. 12 against
Pepperdine, slightly re-injured it Jan. 19 at San Francisco after sitting out the previous
game at Saint Mary?s. He was rounding back into full shape and was having one of his
best games of the season when he got hurt with 14:00 to go against SCU. He had 15
points and was 5-for-8 from the field, including 4-for-5 from long range, when he left the
game. If Skinner can?t play, he?ll be replaced in the starting lineup by Kyle Bankhead, who
returned to action last weekend after missing the Portland game with back spasms

What reasoning can you back the waves??? They are a HORIDE 0-6 ATS in there last 6, 4-8 ATS this year including 0-3 ATS at home. The zags are playing great! Winning 8 in a row and 4-2 ATS. Unless people see something I'm not I seriously cant see any reason why NOT the zags.

They have split the series in 5 out of the last 6 years and i believe Pepperdine has never lost back to back conf games at home.....someone might want to check that last figure but i think that is correct.....

Teddy -

I'm with ya on Gonzaga. That might be reason enough to bet on Pepperdine. Like you, my record has sucked this year (something like 11-12 posted). However, based on numbers alone I don't see any reason to bet on Pepperdine. And that doesn't include the fact that Gonzaga won by 20 point earlier this year.

My numbers come out at about 8 points. Not enough for a large play but enough for a medium sized play on . . .

Gonzaga -5

GL :)

Teddy KGB,

I agree with you. Everything I have comes up with the Zags in this spot. They are playing good ball right now and Peperdine's defense has been nonexistent. The Zags will put up the points against them and the Waves will have to try and keed up and I don't think they can.

Yep, Pepperdine's defense (or lack there of) is the biggest factor in the game. They don't play any. Good offensive teams are almost a lock to score 80 on them. Zags have gone over 90 pts their last 3 meetings. Zags also have a huge rebounding edge. Revenge+homecourt+points on national TV looks appetizing, but I think Gonzaga is the far superior team with too many advantages to overlook.

Ok, I'll jump on the bandwagon:

Zags laying 2.5 for the first half. . . everything said in this thread is basically true. . . Zags have a huge rebounding edge and Pepperdine focuses more on the offensive end. With the rebounding edge, Pepperdine will have to shoot the ball extremely well to say in contention. May adjust at the half and go the other way if I see something that shows Pepperdine is motivated on defense, but the Zags look pretty solid in this spot.
