Any suggestions? Just learning the game and to swing, really enjoying it, any specific set of irons that you'd recommend for a novice?

I see a lot of used clubs on Craigslist.

Me too, and was hoping I could narrow it down. From what I've read/have been told, irons can be geared to do many things, and I am just looking for something that I would be comfortable learning a consistent swing.

we need to play one day. I am a legit hacker though. You are probably already better than me. Once coaching is done (this week) we need to hit all the county courses. email me

I would recommend Pings. Try to find someone who has used irons. Maybe the G5's. I think these are the ones that have the bigger head and wider sole. If you have any questions, get my email from Jack.

My first suggestion would be to get some knockoffs and save a lot of money while getting about the same performance for starters. I would also think that for beginners a callaway type knockoff or even something heavier would be easier. Simply avoid blades and get something large and forgiving, the more you improve begin improving your clubs. GL

before you do anything i would go to a store and hit a few different sets to see what you are comfortable with. i would say this though, i would stay away from "knockoffs" or a cheaper set bc chances are you will play more and more and the better you get the better club you will want. if you go the knockoff route, you'll end up spending a few hundred there and then eventually pay for the better clubs. knockoffs would be for the real hack, the 2muchchalks out there who play a handful of times a year. if you plan on playing once a week or even every two weeks, you'll want the better clubs. as long as you are athletic there is no reason you shouldn't get good clubs.
with that said though, there are good clubs out there for beginner type players that are quality. i would go with the normal name brands.
nike slingshots are one of the most forgiving clubs out there and are solid.
i personally like titleist clubs, pings are always good, taylor mades are up there too.
also, hybrid woods are more and more popular these days, forgiving and easier to hit than some of your longer irons.
2muchchalk should stay away from the golf course for the course's sake. the last time i played with chalk he hit a golf ball backwards, and that was on the 2nd hole. it was a long day for him.

I agree if he is going to stick with it for the long haul and plans on getting significantly better then go ahead and get the "Name Brand". However if he is johny knocker and only plans on scareing the shit out of squirrels 5 or 6 times a year then there is no need in spending an extra 700 bucks. It always makes me laugh when I see someone with a $1000 worth of clubs and $1 worth of game:mj07: Guess if you got the money it doesnt matter, I personally think you would get a lot better with knock-offs and using the saved money for lessons:shrug: GL whatever you decide

Thanks for the opinions guys, JP that is what I'm looking for, what clubs you'd recommend, and UGA I didn't even realize they make knockoffs, which makes sense as well. I'm trying to avoid the picture you painted, the guy who shows up with million dollar clubs and a two cent game, and just looking for a reasonable club to learn with. Was going to go the used route, but will look at the knockoffs as well.

LTW great post as always. I guess part of my problem is I don't know what type of golfer I am or will ever be, right now I'm as novice as they come and would like to give the game a shot. I enjoy hitting at the range, have hacked around a few courses before, and want to really learn. As far as how much I'll play, I'm not too sure.

2much I'll shoot you an email about playing, based on LTW2's description, we'd be a good match on the course. :mj07:

Hey Blackman - good to see you around.

I would suggest a brand name club, and for the stage you're at, you can get a good used set for a real resonable price. Golf shops are full of clubs that have been used only a few times - basically brand new.

Callaway makes a nice game improvement iron, and Ping is pretty much as good as you can get.
Another one you would be suprised with is Cobra. They make a real quality set for a very reasonable price.

Good Luck!

Blackman, good to see you take up the game. I would highly suggest buying a used set of name brand clubs. Callaway is the brand I play and recomend. The first thing I would do then is have them regripped. Once done you practictilly have a new set. Good luck and keep us informed.

blackman,
i know of only a hanful of people who have started playing the game and not taking a liking to it where they play a decent bit during the year.

ebay, although maybe not for the first set, is a great route to go with the used club route. a good way to save money on clubs that are only a few years old. i have a R5 driver that was bought on ebay for 80 bucks and i hit it just as good as the best drivers out there.

also, the club shaft is just as important. if you go to a store or a range and have someone look at your swing, you want to know if you are going to need a regular - for your slower swing type or up to stiff or x - stiff or tour stiff for your faster swings.

good luck and let me know if you need any further info. also, i'll pbly play with chalk a few times this summer - reluctantly, we should get a foursome together or something. i heard that m. baz. can move the ball around the course a little bit too, a southpaw from what i hear.

Sounds good. I'm trying to get as much info I can and visiting some shops to see what feel I like best. Would be up for a round this summer, and yes Baz does play from the south side.
