This kid pitching for Tampa Bay tonight can throw. We went to school together at MTSU. I can't believe he got called up tonight for his debut. I watched him pitch in a few games at MTSU last year and he's got great stuff. Don't know how he'll do but best of luck to him.

Rays' Brazelton to make debut

MLB.com

TORONTO -- Dewon Brazelton will make his Major League debut Friday night when he pitches for Devil Rays against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Brazelton, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-hander, was Tampa Bay's No. 1 pick in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft -- the third player taken overall -- after a stellar career at Middle Tennessee State University.

Brazelton started the season at Double-A Orlando, where he won his last four starts to finish 5-9 with a 3.33 ERA. He was promoted to Triple-A Durham two weeks ago and won his only regular season start and one game in the playoffs, helping Durham to the Governors Cup championship.

Despite being drafted in early June last year, it took until Aug. 25 for Brazelton to be signed. He was with the Devil Rays from September until the end of the season, but didn't pitch, although he dressed for games and worked out with the team. He pitched briefly in the Instructional League last fall.

A native of Tullahoma, Tenn., Brazelton was 13-2 with a 1.42 ERA as a junior in college before signing with the Devil Rays. He struck out a school-record 154 batters with only 24 walks in 127 innings that season. A first-team All-America selection by Baseball America last year, Brazelton, who had 335 strikeouts in 310 collegiate innings, is Middle Tennessee State's all-time strikeout leader.

He also was a finalist in 2001 for the Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the top amateur player in the nation.

Rays' Brazelton Slated For Debut

9/13/02 6:06:31 PM

TORONTO - The Tampa Bay Devil Rays recalled right-handed pitchers Dewon Brazelton, Delvin James and Jesus Colome from Triple-A Durham on Friday.

Brazelton, the third overall selection in the 2001 amateur draft, was scheduled to make his major league debut tonight against Toronto.

The 22-year-old went a combined 6-9 with a 3.21 ERA in his first professional season with Double-A Orlando and Durham. He was added to the major league roster last September after signing on Aug. 25, but he didn't pitch.

He replaced Jorge Sosa in the rotation. Sosa will pitch out of the bullpen.
