Surging fuel costs are about to inflict more pain on consumers, this time in the form of rapidly rising electricity bills.

Power prices are being pushed up across the U.S., with increases sometimes soaring into double digits, due to costlier coal and natural gas, the fuels used to make 70% of the nation's electricity.

...

Proposed electricity-rate increases are cropping up all over the country. Potomac Edison Co., a unit of Allegheny Energy Inc., is asking Virginia regulators for permission to raise rates in July by 29%. In its rate request, the utility cited higher fuel and purchased-power costs.

...

The impact of higher fossil fuel prices is felt beyond just the price of electricity. It is also provoking states to explore expansion of nuclear power plants and renewable energy, such as wind and solar power, to break the grip of fossil fuels.

Last week, Ohio became the latest state to take a tentative step away from fossil fuels. Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland signed legislation requiring electric utilities to satisfy one quarter of their customers' energy needs, by 2025, through such means as renewable energy, new nuclear reactors and energy efficiency measures.

We all complain about high gas prices. But those still heating there homes with oil take it double. Nat Gas is better but on the rise also. They just said this morning world demand is now down 1%. And supply at all time high. But prices keep going up. Today our stations gave us kick with 10 cents
jump from 3.60 to 3.70. There is no way that is on level. So it's up to you how to get around the cost. Park one car, Ride a bike, take a bus, turn heat down and air up in home. It's like voting if you don't vote don't complain.

I'd think you'd be pretty warmed up to a country with no checks and balances after the antics of the current administration...but I can see why you'd be concerned about a democratic administration getting a crack at all the new stuff they can pull off thanks to the currents.

I am intrigued about seeing the responses of a few around here when Obama and Hillary together get to run roughshod over the system with no fear of recourse...much like Dubbya and Dick have enjoyed - but with even more leeway (you are correct about that...).

The only problem for Obama or Hillary will be that people will probably be able to read and understand their signing statements, unlike G-Dub...:mj07:

You might have added what caused cost to process coal to increased--increased cost of gas (why its higher in CA)-caused diesal fuel -which was much less than gas years ago--to jump higher than gas.

Its called emision standards and regs--then you might put up who introduced these bills and now who's complaining at the results and laying blame elsewhere.

I am certainly not against keeping environment clean--just don't harp about cost after the fact and take responsibilty for it than trying to point finger at someone else.

So now you at least admit that prices are high, but are blaming it on emission standards?

Frankly, I want more standards in California. That's money well spent. The air is still too polluted here.

But again - this state has now made two strong attempts to require an aggressively progressive amount of electric vehicles - both times squashed by the oil and auto lobby with the help of the federal government. We are trying to make this situation better for ourselves. If not for Bush 1, California would be using probably 20% less oil now.
