McCain, Thompson, Tancredo all take jabs at President Bush
FOX NEWS

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- President Bush drew sporadic, yet startling criticism Tuesday night from Republican presidential hopefuls, many of whom are unhappy with his handling of the Iraq war, his diplomatic style and his approach to immigration reform.

"I would certainly not send him to the United Nations" to represent the United States, said Tommy Thompson, the former Wisconsin governor and one-time member of Bush's Cabinet, midway through a spirited campaign debate.

Arizona Sen. John McCain criticized the administration for its handling of the Iraq War, and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said, "I think we were under-prepared and under-planned for what came after we knocked down Saddam Hussein."

Rep. Duncan Hunter of California said the current administration "has the slows" when it comes to building a security fence along the border with Mexico.

Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado recalled that White House aide Karl Rove had once told him "never darken the door of the White House." The congressman said he'd tell George W. Bush the same thing.

The criticism of Bush was more in keeping of the type of rhetoric that could be expected when Democratic presidential contenders debate.

Its prominence at the GOP event -- while Bush was traveling overseas -- was a reflection of his poor poll ratings and the need of even members of his own party to campaign on platforms of change.

The Republicans sprinkled the criticism of Bush throughout a two-hour debate that ranged over topics from war to immigration legislation pending in Congress to religion. The debate was the third of the accelerated primary campaign.

None of the 10 men on the debate stage raised their hand in agreement when moderator Wolf Blitzer of CNN asked if anyone favored allowing gays to serve openly in the military.

Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas and Hunter both said they would pardon Vice President Dick Cheney's former aide Lewis I. "Scooter" Libby, sentenced to 30 months in prison earlier in the day for lying and obstructing a CIA leak investigation.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a former prosecutor, said the sentence was excessive, which "argues in favor of a pardon."

Pauls remarks on our preemptive war policy made more sense that anything said in this debate.

I like these debates Gregg on both sides of fence--nothing better than to see politicians from same party go after their own.

Only wish they could be on even keel--makes it a little boring on the questions asked when Rebs have no prob getting quized from liberal media (CNN) but the Dems refuse to be grilled any network that isn't of liberal persuasion--don't you think:)

I assume you are talking about so called news organizations like this one who have no shame? How many times would this alleged news organization keep making a mistake like this?

Fox News Apologizes for Tape Goof

NEW YORK - Fox News Channel apologized on-air Tuesday for running tape of a different congressman while reporting Monday on the indictment of Rep. William J. Jefferson on bribery charges.

The network ran footage of House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers of Michigan instead of Jefferson. Both congressmen are black.

Fox blamed the mistake on a 22-year-old production assistant hurriedly grabbing a wrong videotape. Fox's Washington bureau chief, Brian Wilson, said he was mortified by the error.

On Tuesday, Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum said about the Jefferson story: "We mistakenly ran the wrong videotape accompanying that story and we apologize for that error."

The apology apparently wasn't accepted by Conyers.

"Fox News has a history of inappropriate on-air mistakes that are neither fair, nor balanced," he said Tuesday. "This type of disrespect for people of color should no longer be tolerated. I am personally offended by the network's complete disregard for accuracy in reporting and lackluster on-air apology."

Wilson said he called Conyers' office on Tuesday to apologize. He said he spoke to a press secretary and asked what he could do to make amends, including coming to Conyers' office to apologize in person. No one got back to him, he said.

Conyers' press representative, Melanie Roussell, said the congressman was upset that Fox's on-air apology did not say specifically what the mistake was.

Fox News Channel has become a political issue itself recently, with Democratic presidential candidates refusing to appear in a debate sponsored by the network.

Well, I have to give the Republicans who criticized G-Dub some credit...they are smart enough to realize following his policies is political suicide with the people of this country. MOST of them, anyway...there are a handful of diehards that hang out in Internet forums, I hear. ;)

As for Fox there still #1 but 5 quarters now of drops in viewer's is a sign of wrong direction.
This debate with audience asking some question is better.

nobody should be surprised that the candidates tried to distance themselves from bush....this is not complicated...this is how politics is played..candidates distance themselves from a president who has a low approval rating & align themselves with a president who has a high approval rating...

and i wouldn't be suprised if the dems mention bill clinton as many times as they could & the reps mention reagan as many times as they could...

Pauls remarks on our preemptive war policy made more sense that anything said in this debate.
Ron Paul's most eloquent moment may have come when he branded the nation's main moral failure as its new policy of "pre-emptive engagement" which he said has taken the place of the ancient, Christian idea of a "just war."

Paul returned to his anti-war theme again and again, claiming at one point that the United States was spending in the area of $1 trillion a year defending its "empire" around the world - and that the money would be far better spent if repatriated.

Paul also gave an eloquent defense of free markets, damned the Iraq war as being waged on behalf of Big Oil and alluded to America's role in the 1950s in overthrowing a democratically elected leader in Iran.

As long as they make basic mistakes like this, they will remain a joke.

Don't be ridiculous. It's the BASIC mistakes they make that are so amazing. What did they do in this case, just grab footage from a box labeled "Black Congressmen"? Or how about when they had a "D" next to Mark Foley's name for over an hour when reporting on his scandal? Far from an honest or "normal" error. Even you can see that, right pardner?

As for obsession?! Wow, you've seen millions of anti-NYT, anti-Clinton rants from the dynamic duo and have never called them on anything. Whatever I've said about Fox is a drop in the ocean compared to their "obsessions". In fact, I have even conceded some positive things about Fox every now and then. That's something you will NEVER get from the other side.

As much as you claim to be fair and balanced or neutral or whatever, you are as partisan as anyone AR.

that's bullshit and you know it. If nobody ever called them out on their rants, you wouldn't either. Just admit it, you are generally on their side. There's nothing wrong with that. You sound silly when when you pretend otherwise.

nope not true....i'm a pretty argumentative person & will take another side just for the hell of it....ask my wife..

and btw i'm on their side when it comes to the war & immigration....not on their side when it comes to abortion, gays in the military, & other stuff.

but i don't like to pile on people....it's just not my cup of tea...

and for the record i do think dtb is obsessed too much with clinton....but everytime he mentions him....you, chad, kosar, stevie, & others jump on him...don't see much use for me to do it also.

hope that clear it up for you....

The only thing I now understand from my time here is that the NY Times clearly is a mouthpiece for liberal values, because they did not print the picture of John Conyers posing as Jefferson on their front page.

I will again give FauxNews credit, tho...Martha MacCallum is one hot piece of anchorness.

It's really no wonder they continue to be the highest rated cable news show (although CNN has more unique watchers on a daily basis), considering the female "talent" they bring on board, and Rupert paying cable systems to take them on in the early days. You gotta pay to play in the "news" game. Rupert knows that, for should.

It's called proper English. I know they didn't emphasize that very much in your formative Brooklyn neighborhood nor in your present-day Spanglish suburb. If you are going to make it in this world, however, you will need to understand it when presented to you. You may even be asked to write a professional letter or thesis someday.

Sincerely,
Saul
