First, a disclaimer: Ranking schedules in April is an exercise in futility.
Consider the case of the 2008 Colts. Going into last season, they had the NFL's second-toughest schedule, their opponents having combined to go 152-104 in '07. Those same teams wound up finishing an aggregate 127-138-1.
And you think if the Ravens and rookie quarterback Joe Flacco had to go to Dallas in September, things might have been different than they were in December, when Baltimore clobbered the reeling Cowboys.
Probably.
So take that into account. Now that we have that out of the way, here's how the 2009 NFL schedule grades out:
1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Raheem Morris' debut could be unforgiving. The Bucs play all four NFC East teams in the first five weeks and then the Panthers and Patriots before their bye. Oh, and that Week 7 "home" game against New England is in London.
2. Carolina Panthers
They get the two East divisions and a rough finish?Patriots, Vikings, Giants and Saints.
3. Miami Dolphins
By the numbers, this is the toughest schedule. But after opening with the Falcons, Colts and Chargers, the Dolphins won't have consecutive games against playoff teams again.
4. New Orleans Saints
A fast start is a must?and that's with five of first nine games against playoff teams?because they close with the Patriots, Redskins, Falcons, Cowboys, Bucs and Panthers.
NFL 2009 schedule:
Breer: Grading them 1-32
Florio: Falcons have tough climb
Breer: No breeze for Dolphins
Full schedule: Team-by-team list
Fantasy: Blitz breakdown
5. New York Giants
The Giants get three consecutive road games after opening at home, play the Falcons before going to Denver for Thanksgiving and close with three NFC East games?plus the Panthers and Vikings.
6. Dallas Cowboys
Few teams are as bad in December. So here comes bad news after Thanksgiving: the Giants, Chargers, Saints, Redskins and Eagles (three on the road).
7. New England Patriots
The AFC East got a tough draw, but New England got a few breaks: Three of its first four games are at home as Tom Brady moves back into the lineup.
8. Atlanta Falcons
Their retooled defense will be tested right away with the Dolphins, Panthers and Patriots. But the schedule sets up a strong finish, with two road games in the final six weeks.
9. Indianapolis Colts
The Colts go to steamy Miami in Week 2 on a Monday night and then travel cross-country to Arizona. They also play in prime time in Tennessee and close at frigid Buffalo.
10. Tennessee Titans
Opening at Pittsburgh is tough, as will be a Colts-Patriots turnaround in October. The killer a Christmas Night game against the Chargers, six days after playing Miami.
11. Buffalo Bills
The major challenges are spread out, but the Bills' home edge is mitigated since two of the three December guests are from Northern cities.
12. New York Jets
With new coach Rex Ryan on board, having the Pats and Titans back-to-back in Weeks 2 and 3 doesn't make things easy.
13. Kansas City Chiefs
Good luck, Todd Haley. The Chiefs get the Ravens, the Chargers and the entire NFC East before their Week 8 bye.
14. Denver Broncos
Josh McDaniels and his TBD quarterback get a favorable open schedule (Bengals, Browns, Raiders), but a rough stretch from there (Cowboys, Patriots, Chargers, Ravens, Steelers) that could negate a quick start.
15. Philadelphia Eagles
Philly gets a chance to build some equity, with two teams with new coaches and the Raiders, plus a bye, in its first six weeks, before a three-week gauntlet of NFC East foes.
16. Oakland Raiders
The Raiders have three sets of back-to-back road games. The Giants are on the back end of one and the Steelers another.
17. San Diego Chargers
Their annual slow start could be repeated with the Ravens, Dolphins and Steelers in Weeks 2, 3 and 4. A late closing run is likely with one '08 playoff team the final seven weeks.
18. Detroit Lions
An early three-week stretch with trips to Green Bay and Chicago, and a home game against Pittsburgh won't be easy. The middle of the schedule could provide momentum.
19. Washington Redskins
Good news: Things are manageable before the bye. Bad news: The back end is brutal, with four division games and the Saints and Chargers in the final seven weeks.
20. Jacksonville Jaguars
There's a tough start (Colts, Cardinals), but there are no back-to-back road games until Weeks 16-17, and three consecutive home dates lead into that.
21. San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers have the Cardinals, Vikings and Falcons before their Week 6 bye and then a Colts-Titans turn in early November.
22. Seattle Seahawks
A 2-0 start against the Rams and 49ers is possible, but four road games in five weeks after the bye is tough, especially trips to Dallas, Arizona and Minnesota.
23. Cleveland Browns
Already in a physical division, Cleveland gets street fights with the Vikings and Ravens in the first three weeks. But the Browns also play four of their final five at home.
24. Houston Texans
Before a Week 9 game at Indianapolis, Houston plays five teams coming off losing seasons. After that, there's a bye and then three of four at home.
25. Minnesota Vikings
A favorable start with five sub-.500 teams gives way to a Ravens-Steelers gauntlet, followed by a trip to Green Bay. And Minnesota gets consecutive trips to Carolina and Chicago before finishing against the Giants.
26. Arizona Cardinals
They get a soft finish but have three spates of back-to-back road games.
27. Green Bay Packers
Not exactly a murderer's row, but the Packers get two division games before a Week 5 bye, and must play the two Super Bowl teams on the road in the season's final three weeks. That's after playing Baltimore and going to Chicago in the two weeks prior.
28. Cincinnati Bengals
In Week 6, the Bengals start an eight-week stretch with a bye and five home games.
29. St. Louis Rams
It's not an easy start, with road games on opposite coasts. That said, the bye is in Week 9 and three consecutive home games follow.
30. Chicago Bears
There are potholes, but most tough games are surrounded by manageable matchups. The toughest two-game stretch probably is Eagles-Vikings in November.
31. Baltimore Ravens
The Chargers, Patriots and Vikings appear in Weeks 2, 4 and 6, and each is preceded by a team that won four or fewer games in '08. The whole schedule plays out like this, with one laborious two-game stretch?games against the Colts and Steelers, both of which are home.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers
Four non-division playoff teams are here, and they are spread out: Titans in Week 1, Chargers in Week 4, Vikings in Week 7 and Dolphins in Week 17.
