Thought I'd throw this up, and see what shakes out. Although I know that each situation and family are different, I'm wondering what to give my son for high school graduation. I know we'll give him some cash, but also want to give him something more special and personal. We have had kind of a rocky relationship the past few years, as we live in different states, and he has never fully forgiven me for that decision. But not to get too deep - just wondering what people think would be appropriate cash-wise and otherwise? What have some of you guys done? Thanks.

In addition to whatever gift you get him, you should buy him the book "The University of hard Knocks" by Ralph Parlette....

I received one from my mother when I graduated high school.... I am now 33 years old and I probably get that book down about once a year and re-read it. Great book!

I am a SR in college and my Dad bought me a laptop. Of course, it didn't really register how much I needed it. I thank him every month or two for it.

Also, I didn't ask for anything because my parents have paid my way through school. IMO, the best gift I have ever received. Keep that in mind. I don't know what his plans are after HS, but whatever the gift is, make it something that will be long term.

I'd probably have to check out #8 before I decide if that's a good present or not. However, honestly, $4k was a little more than I had planned to do, let alone $8k...:142smilie

Some interesting ideas in here - a laptop would be a good idea for him. He is considering journalism school and pursuit of a career in sportswriting - he's a college football freak.

Really proud of him - he has been a soccer player growing up, just decided to try track his senior year. His first meet was two nights ago, he took 1st 2nd and 3rd in his events, two of them solo events. Pretty good for a first meet.
