DEKALB, Ill. - A gunman opened fire in a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University on Thursday, injuring as many as 15 people, authorities said. "Campus police report that the immediate danger has passed. The gunman is no longer a threat," the school reported on its Web site at 4:14 p.m.

Kishwaukee Community Hospital said on its Web site up to 15 victims were arriving, including three to four with head wounds.

The shooting took place around 3 p.m. in Cole Hall near the King Commons, a central gathering place on the 25,000-student campus, according to the Web site.

All classes were canceled Thursday night and the campus was closed on Friday. Students were urged to call their parents "as soon as possible" and were offered counseling at any residence hall, according to the school Web site.

The Associated Press left messages for university police and police in DeKalb, located about 65 miles west of Chicago.

WOW just heard about it myself. I went to Northern in the late 80's. I loved the campus and had some good times there.

I would say when I went there it was probably 80% Chicago or burbs. My first roommate was from Elmwood Park (you can probably guess what nationality he was if you are just a little bit familair with the burbs). Great guy and great family. His family got me a job in construction with my roommate one summer, but we didn't seem to do much if you know what I mean. My second roommate was from South Holland. He lived about a block down from ex-Cub Steve Trout. His brother was good friends with him. Trout was a kind of wierd dude sometimes. Most of the guys that we partied with on our floors were from Downers Grove, Oaklawn, Oakbrook, Oakwhatever. We spent more time in the city then we did in DeKalb. Had a great time with those guys and had my first slider with them. I grew up in a smaller town at the time and was clueless about alot of things but did that ever change. Man were those some times and hardly ever had any problems. We even played some pickup bball games with Kenny Battle before he transferred to Illinois. I am really biased and have been to a number of cities but Chicago is by far the best of them. I just love being there.
