HSF Plays:
South Fayette -7 Montour (52')
Two WPIAL foes go at it Fri night... South Fayette is 9-0 and looking to close the season out undefeated... In 2016, they were 10-1 (got bounced in the playoffs to conference opponent New Castle in a wild shootout 51-43)(this loss stung more as the Lions defeated New Castle by 24 a few weeks earlier)... So Fayette is back on top looking to get the W and insure the opening rounds playoff home field... HC Joe Rossi (133-41) is in 11th year with the Lions but has a deep resume throughout the Pennsylvania high school gridiron.... He likes his teams chances as he likes the depth on this team with Senior leadership abounds.....The offense is firing on all cylinders and averaging 44 ppg while holding serve at 10.4 ppg..... Running the offense is 3rd year starter Sr QB (6'1" 195 lbs) Drew Saxton, last year he threw for 2,638 yards w/30 TDs.... This season he ranks 3rd in WPIAL, with 2,368 yards (completing 64%)...Saxton has 6,564 total career yards and is 9 yards short of Andrew Didonato, a S Fayette alum on the all time career yards... As a Sophomore, he set a WPIAL game record of 435 yards in one game as a Soph... South Fayette has a long history of producing accurate and long armed QB talent that since 2010, 3 different gun-slingers have thrown for over 2,00p yards each season....
The Lions did lose 22 Seniors and 14 starters to replace.... The Lions last won State crowns in 2014 & 2013, but have owned the League Titles from 2012-2016...and 2009 & 2010.....Last year, Lions shut out the Montour Spartans 36-0....Saxton has some very athletic help... TE/LB Sr (6'2" 205 lbs) Noah Plack caught 35 passes last year (679 yards w/10 TDs) is getting a lot of attention as this year's #1 Receiver averaging 19.4 yards on 35 receptions (looks like heading to Delaware to play)....RB Sr Johnny Beck is leading the Rushing yardage as only had 320 yards w/7 TDs, but has been a much pleasant surprise... Olineman, Sr (6'4" 250 lbs) Ray Eldredge, heading to Richmond on full ride, he anchors both O/D Line... The offense is really clicking and last week against Highlands, Saxton threw for 185 yards w/4 TDs... WR Mike Trimbur caught 2 TDs (5 receptions for 106 yards)... RB J Beck rushed for 102 yards w/3 TDs.... The score was 42-7 at half....
Montour has its share of athletes too... The offense averages 35.3 ppg while allowing 10.6 (nearly identical to So Fayette... Spartans are 7-1 and are ranked #12 in Div 4A (while Lions are #4) they are #90 in PA, while Lions are #34.... HC Lou Cerro is in his 13th season at Montour (81-41 record) he is well respected and has had some very good skill players returning this year... Spartans returns 6 offensive starters and 6 Defensive starters from a rebuilding year last.... His returning starting QB is Sr (6'2" 200 lbs) Kavon Morman, who had 980 yards w/9 TDs passing and rushed for 452 yards w/5 TDs (a dual threat).... RB Braydon Jones returns after a 563 yards on 102 carries w/13 TDs... He's described as a "bruising runner" that carries Defenders with him if you hit high (he has rushed for over 600 yards thus far
(offers to WMU and Temple)... WR Ronnie Stevenson (6'5" 210 lbs) averaged 19.7 yards on 18 receptions last year.... Transfer WR Brandon Lipford, led his high school, W Allegheny ly with 751 yards w/11TDs..This year he leads all WRs with 15 catches for over 300 yards... Also, Sr Wide-out, Jaxon Schrenker is high on the list... In last week's, 35-7 rout, QB K Morman had collected 219 yards of total offense (9 of 18 for 189 yards w/3 TDs.... Opening holes is OL Sr George Padezanin (6'4" 255 lbs).
Montour was bounced early from the playoffs last year... HC Cerro believes this team is much improved from last year's rebuild... The Spartans are very affective on the ground averaging 199.8 rush yards per game.... South Fayette knows that this game is very important as it means the League Crown by itself and at least a first round home playoff game.. After winning the Class 4A Northwest Nine Conference and finishing undefeated doesn't mean anything unless you follow it up with State success... A loss means sharing the Crown... Also, Lions have a 55 game win streak in Conference....
I really like both of these teams to get after it tonight.... A lot of skill players on both sides of the ball... Fairly young Defenses may struggle... Both teams play a lot of two way, so can't rule out exhausted players in the 2nd half, which is good for the offenses.....
Played 3 Units on the OVER 52'....WIN if I had to take a side, I lean South Fayette here as the better team, however, in this Rivalry anything can happen..... Gl
