Hammel's dead arm "extreme"

Dead arm? At the moment, Jason Hammel's arm feels like it's dead and buried.

"I've had a dead arm, but this is what I'd call an extreme dead arm," Hammel said. "I can't say it's numb because usually with numbness there's tingling. There's no tingling. It's just really, really tired."

Hammel still is scheduled to take his normal turn in the rotation Saturday against the Giants, but nothing is certain at this point. He disclosed Tuesday that his arm, specifically the shoulder area, has bothered him for about a month.

Sure enough, he has struggled in his last three starts, allowing 13 earned runs in 15 innings. The Rockies lost two of the three games. Before that, they had won 16 of Hammel's previous 22 starts.

He wants to believe it's just fatigue, it's just September being September, but Hammel has never been down these roads before. He's never left a game, as he did after four innings in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers, because the spark plugs in his shoulder weren't firing.

"I'm very convinced there's definitely fatigue setting in," he said. "I'm not the guy who would just quit on fatigue. But I was leaving the ball up and not getting guys out again.

"It's baseball. It's a long season, so I fully expect to get fatigued. But for it to kind of shut down in a game like that, where I was getting no feedback out of my shoulder at all . . . it just didn't feel right."

In a perfect world, Hammel's arm issues will prove to be a short-term nuisance. In that world, he would start Saturday and give the Rockies six or seven strong innings against San Francisco.

And if not? Then the dominoes could start falling. If Hammel can't pitch Saturday, it would further tax a rotation already weakened by Aaron Cook's season-ending broken leg. Esmil Rogers would start, which would force newly acquired Octavio Dotel into Rogers' role in the bullpen.

If Hammel tries to go Saturday but lasts only a few innings, it would put more pressure on an already weary bullpen.

Yes, the Rockies have a 12-man bullpen thanks to the expanded rosters. But that doesn't mean Jim Tracy has 12 relievers he trusts. And make no doubt, these final two weeks of the season are all about trust.

It's crucial that Hammel, if he's good to go on Saturday, goes deep into the game. Just like it's crucial that Jeff Francis, Thursday's starter, goes more than the three innings he worked in his last outing. Because don't look now, but the Rockies have had their last off day of 2010.

"We have no days off . . . so you're not really interested in a number of real short starts," Tracy said. "You've got certain guys down there (in the bullpen) who, in certain situations, you're going to go to. You kind of feel like, in the back of your mind, like you've been grinding on the guy for a while. You really don't want to put yourself in that position."

Hammel has no pain, will start against Giants

Rockies pitcher Jason Hammel seemed surprised by the news. His bullpen session Wednesday was pedestrian, noteworthy only because there was no pain.

But when he ran off the field after batting practice, he learned he was starting Saturday. The Rockies will send the right-hander out against the Giants with fingers crossed that his dead arm returns to life.

"I am excited they are giving me the opportunity. Everybody is sore this time of year. It's the first time I have been through this," Hammel said. "I can't be selfish. At this point, we need everyone."

The only way Hammel won't pitch opposite of Barry Zito is if he shows up sore today. That's unlikely.

"That hasn't happened once. There's just been fatigue," Hammel said. "I know the massive importance of this game. I am going to give them everything I have."

Another factor is the lack of options. Esmil Rogers, who will likely piggyback Hammel, has been deconditioned because of his long stretch in the bullpen. Rogers said Wednesday: "You know I will be ready. I will do whatever they ask."

Whither Mr. Smith?

The mysterious journey of Seth Smith into the doghouse continued Wednesday. He lost at-bats to Jay Payton in Los Angeles and was a no-show in Wednesday's lineup with a right-hander starter. What gives?

"It has more to do with (Ryan) Spilborghs than Smith," manager Jim Tracy said.

The reality is that Smith has slumped, failing to adjust to the new approach against him. He's taking first-pitch fastballs for strikes, leaving him behind in the count and vulnerable to breaking pitches. He saw more fastballs as a part-time player and supreme pinch hitter. Smith has just six RBIs since July 30.

Footnotes.

Reliever Matt Belisle has earned $200,000 in incentives and can trigger another $75,000 clause if he reaches 75 games. . . . Ian Stewart will participate in a simulated game today in Tucson after swinging the bat well Wednesday. "Yeah, it went good. I felt great. I hope to play Friday (against the Giants)," Stewart said. . . . The Dodgers flip-flopped their rotation, allowing Clayton Kershaw to face the Rockies next Wednesday. Manager Joe Torre said he purposely did it to try to impact the playoff race. It could backfire. The Rockies shelled Kershaw last Sunday and have enjoyed success against him at Coors Field.

I wanted this game over something fierce.
Ump Bell turned me off it...seems ump news is hurting me more than helping me this season.

4-0 last 2 days and just chillin' pre-playoffs so whathey.
Good sign, maybe, with my brutalness for late August and early September.

Gonna fade the Twins, likely, whatever East team they face.
Might try Rangers over the other East team, depending on healthage.
Not sure on the NL but hard to not like the Phils with the front 3 in the rotation...I think that Halladay is gonna rock, what with his first chance at postseason play; Hamels is on fire currently; Oswalt will contribute as well. Phils face Yanks and I think I'm on the NL...they actually have home-field for a change, which don't hurt.
