ooh rah,

Went and saw a Midnight showing of Jarhead last night too just to begin my b-day celebration early. Wow, that flick hit the nail pretty much right on the head in all sorts of ways.

saw the movie as well yesterday. mind you i'm not a marine, nor can i run a mile in less than 10 minutes probably without coughing up a lung.

mucho props to all marines and the rest of the military for that matter. i couldn't make it through a boot camp if my life depended on it.

with that said, i likened the movie to full metal jacket. in the sense that the first hour was great. really good stuff. but then much like jacket when they go to vietnam it gets boring (here they go to kuwait). I still would recommend it as it was interesting and entertaining i just thought it kind of waned at the end. I also think not being a marine or in the military I might have missed some of the jokes or rituals.

Saw Jarhead-not even close to what it was like over there-well, some things were okay but most of it was too hollywood--much worse in battle in Iraq as well as border of kuwait-I will admit i had some small 'flashbacks"-that made me uncomfortable.....some day i will write up a story about my first run to drop 6 rangers in Iraq.....A day I will never forget.....

The Marine stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, Marine,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"

The Marine squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the Marine waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, you Marine,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

BleedDodgerBlue - yes, the whole movie was chocked full of snide comments and references that only a jarhead could catch and laugh about. Luckily Iwas the only person in the entire theatre, because I was laughing pretty hard at some of the stuff in there... how damn true it was, and remembering when I was doing the same.

worm,

Remember "Hurry up and wait?" That was the point of the whole movie why they never showed them making contact with the Royal Guard.
The movie was written about life in the eyes of a E-3's and down in the squad and fire team level. Hurry up and wait is perfect material for it.

My opinion, the movie was masterfully written to show a bottom view up reflection on life in the Corps. Unfortunately, I think a lot of the little nuances, and sidebar comments are going to be lost on non-marine folks.

the wall of shame
the jerking it in the stall
the "sassiness" they give the Staff Sgt about their gear being broke right in front of the reporter

all pretty much what goes on.

I'm probably going to end up going to see it again and again to see how much more stuff I can pick up on . But I tell ya, even some of the references to "jodey banging your girl"... oh man... word for word I used to say/hear the same lines 10 years ago.
