Has Spygate tainted previous Patriots titles?

Pini says NO ! :mj07:

GLENDALE, Ariz. ? The New England Patriots were caught videotaping the New York Jets' sideline ? a violation of NFL rules ? in the first half of the first quarter of the first game in this perfect season.

NFL security immediately confiscated the tape of the Jets' defensive signals. The Patriots never viewed, never studied and never benefited from it. While they were strongly punished for the action ? a couple of big fines and the loss of a first-round draft pick ? one thing Patriots owner Robert Kraft said this week about the lasting impact of the scandal is true.

"We all know it had no impact on any game this season," Kraft said Tuesday.

Presuming the Patriots didn't continue to spy ? and there is no indication they did ? then all talk about asterisks or tainted titles should they defeat the New York Giants on Sunday in Super Bowl XLII is off-base.

It might be a stroke of good luck to their legacy that they were caught early in the season (if it was in October, it would be different), but it's a fact. Logic dictates that all 18 victories this season are clean.

But what Kraft was uninterested in addressing or applying the same standard of logic to was all those victories from prior seasons, including the three Super Bowl titles of the Bill Belichick era.

Unless you're na?ve enough to believe the first time Belichick tried this stunt was the one he got caught (not to mention ignore multiple specific charges), the sanctity of past glory has to come into doubt.

"We're here this week celebrating," Kraft said, offering a non-answer to the questions about the previous seasons. "I try to talk about something I know something about."

Here's what we do know about the past: After New England was caught in September, stories emerged of at least four previous spying incidents from seasons past being brought to the league's attention. That likely played a part in commissioner Roger Goddell sending out a summer memo specifically reminding teams of the filming rule.

Included was a reported charge that the Patriots filmed the sideline of the Detroit Lions during a regular-season game in 2006. That begs the common sense question: If Belichick would employ such tactics to beat a pathetic Lions team that finished the season 3-13, then why wouldn't he use it in a Super Bowl?

The Patriots beat the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21 in Super Bowl XXXIX and Eagles players have now expressed questions about how that game played out. Cornerback Sheldon Brown specifically wondered if it was just a coincidence that every time the Eagles blitzed Tom Brady on the decisive fourth-quarter drive, New England called the perfect antidote, a screen pass. Or did the Patriots, indeed, know the Eagles' defensive signals?

"I was like, 'Man, I never saw that many screens,' " Brown told the Associated Press. "Something's not right about that."

Said safety Brian Dawkins, "Now there's always going to be questions about the situation; was it great adjustments at halftime or what?"

Pittsburgh's Hines Ward brought up questions about the Patriots' two AFC championship game victories over the Steelers this decade. Others have complained about other games.

The Patriots' players have always insisted that they knew nothing about the filming and that is certainly believable. If Belichick was doing it, there would be no reason for him to have told them.

Understandably, the players resent the implication that any of their Super Bowls are tainted and considering there is no NFL investigation, not to mention the near impossibility of proving a negative, they can only shrug their shoulders in frustration.

One man that would know, Belichick, has said little to nothing about previous seasons.

"That's all been discussed," he said this week, even if it hasn't.

Kraft casually mentioned a New England talking point that there was more to the story than has been reported ? the unspecified, muddy-the-water assertion that suggests it was really just the result of a rule misinterpretation not malicious intent.

"I'm not sure all the facts are out on that," Kraft said without giving them.

But if New England isn't willing ? or able under NFL authority ? to get "all the facts" out, then what are fans operating in the court of public opinion supposed to do? They can only go with what we know.

Besides, are people really to believe New England was willing to accept such a harsh penalty from the league ? not to mention the shot at its legacy ? if there are facts that somehow support its innocence?

Retroactive questions about unspecified charges are, almost by definition, unfair. Maybe New England did, coincidentally, call the right plays against the Eagles. Maybe this was just a misunderstanding. One thing this season has proven is the Patriots don't need to resort to nefarious means to be historically great.

But the reason the debate has been raised is because of what Belichick did in September. This situation is his creation.

While in New England there is near lock-step, group-think rejecting the notion that anything is amiss, for many fans across the country the debate (and hate) remain.

This is the bed the Patriots made for themselves, these are the doubts, fair or unfair, that will always linger.

Win Sunday and New England should be considered the undisputed, just and worthy Super Bowl champion; for some fans, though, it will be for the first time.

there should be an asterisk in the record books if they win the Superbowl. They obviously have been cheating for years. CLASSLESS SCUMBAGS...

From the coach to the quarterback to defensive backs taking cheap shots. The coach and quarterback are scumbags off the field, Belicheat cheated on his wife and bought his mistress an apartment in New York and baby daddy does not even care about his bastard kid he fathered. How could anyone pull for these guys to win anything.

Hopefully the former camera guy they made sign a confidentiality agreement with hangs their ass out to dry and confirms what I have been saying about them for years, Belichick may be an average coach, but he is definitely the best cheater in the game.

I know we all make mistakes, I damn sure have but these guys take it to another level and one day they will have to pay the piper.

IMHO that kind of crap goes on all the time and by all teams. Come-on now, for how long have you seen the coaches talking on the side-lines holding up something to hid their lips moving....

Don't tell me you have never seen players on the sidelines looking at Photos of the current game plays to identify weaknesses on the other team...

They got caught, but everyone does it, or some form of it....so big deal...:142smilie

I believe that is why they went on to kick every teams ass throughout the season and the majority of them by big margins....:mj07:

:iagree:

I am waiting for them to be stripped of a Super Bowl title & bare the shame of being the embarrased franchise in the 4 major sports.

that's not obvious at all...they were caught once & paid a fine...let's see what transpires from the accusations from this former employee before we brand them perpetual cheaters..

Hey AR, I agree we should wait....but he isnt the only other person making accusations.

The Jags have previously filed a complaint with the NFL about 'communication malfuctions' w/ the league, as have the Green Bay Packers. One team, I forget which one, has stated they believe that NE actually listened in on thier play calling by intercepting thier signal at Foxboro.

There are just too many accusations from completely different sources for SOMETHING wrong not to be going on...

I think it is more the extent & how deep this goes rather than IF something else is there....

Patriots, NFL deny allegation New England taped Rams' final walkthrough before 2002 Super Bowl

February 2, 2008

PHOENIX (AP) -- A member of the New England Patriots' video staff taped the St. Louis Rams' last walkthrough before the 2002 Super Bowl, a Boston newspaper reported Saturday.

The NFL, however, said it was satisfied this was not another Spygate.

"We were aware of the rumor months ago and looked into it. There was no evidence of it on the tapes or in the notes produced by the Patriots, and the Patriots told us it was not true," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told The Associated Press.

Citing an unidentified source, the Boston Herald reported that a Patriots employee recorded the Rams' walkthrough at the Superdome in the New Orleans a day before the Super Bowl. New England beat the heavily favored Rams 20-17 its first NFL title.

The Herald reported that a source close to the Patriots in the 2001 season said the team held a walkthrough at the Superdome in New Orleans before the game on Feb. 3, 2002. After the Patriots took a team picture, a member of their video department stayed inside the stadium and taped the Rams' session.

It was not known whether the cameraman was told by the Patriots to film the practice or what he did with the tape, the Herald said. The Rams were two-touchdown favorites, but lost on Adam Vinatieri's last-second field goal.

"The suggestion that the New England Patriots recorded the St. Louis Rams' walkthrough on the day before Super Bowl XXXVI is absolutely false. Any suggestion to the contrary is untrue," Patriots spokesman Stacey James told the AP.

Rams spokesman Rick Smith, reading a statement from team president John Shaw, said, "At this point, we have no comment."

The unbeaten Patriots will try to win their fourth Super Bowl in seven seasons Sunday when they play the New York Giants.

Early this season, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell fined New England coach Bill Belichick $500,000 and docked the team $250,000 and a first-round draft pick after the Spygate scandal. The Patriots were accused of videotaping New York Jets defensive coaches as they signaled to players.

New England did not have a walkthrough Saturday. The Giants held one at the Arizona Cardinals' practice facility.

A walkthrough is done without pads or helmets, giving teams a chance to practice their formations.

Goodell spent much of his state of the game address Friday talking about that episode. He said he did not think the Patriots used such tapes to win previous titles.

"There was no indication that it benefited them in any of the Super Bowl victories," he said.

Goodell also defended his decision to destroy notes and videotapes linked to the Spygate, saying "there was no purpose for them."

Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., who sent Goodell a letter asking for explanation, said Goodell's response "didn't make any sense at all."

I think a lot of people have there head in the sand if they think there is not more to this..........

Look at some of the close games the Pats have played on there way to their superbowl titles.......

Wonder what Jeff Fischer thinks about the Pats 17-14 win over Tennessee in that playoff game that was in freezing temps...........

Wonder what Jon Gruden thinks about the Pats win over the Raiders in the tuck game.........

Wonder what Andy Reid, John Foxx and Mike Martz........think about their 3 pt superbowl losses......

Pats beat Bill Cohwer twice in Pitts on way to SB,s

I would like to hear some public comments from these coaches on these close losses..........

Also one simple fact even if you believe the Pats only did it once.........

ITS AN EMBARASSMENT THE WAY BELICHEK HAS ADRESSED THIS ISSUE...........HE WONT ANSWER ANY QUESTION AND IS REALLY JUST IGNORING THE ISSUE..........

And whats funny is that I like the Patriots but this whole thing is troubling to me and I cant help but wonder about past playoff games..........

It says a lot to me that other coaches have not spoken out on this..........maybe because they are cheating too..........who knows........

I've been bitching about the Pats for literally 6+ years and most people just called me a crybaby for doing it.

Not only is all this stuff coming out now, but over these last several years, they get away with murder on the field.

Defense has gotten away with severe holding of receivers for years. How much bigger of an example than Bruschi holding on 2nd and Goal against the Chargers...NOT CALLED. Yet it was twice as bad as Ravens holding on 4th down that saved the Pats perfect season.

This team is a FRAUD and has tainted the NFL. Its hard to have anything close to a dynasty in this day and age, but it gets a lot easier when you constantly cheat to gain several small advantages over every other team.

Well now according to ESPN & other sources...

A Rams coach spoke out and wonders how the Pats perfectly anticipated a play they ran on their 3, in the red zone, that they have not ran once this year.

Oh yeah, the Pats have now been accused of taping the Rams walkthrough which just happen to be their red zone plays....

Kurt Warner spoke out & said the NFL didnt really investigate too well....

Could former players possibly be ready to burst the bubble too...

A former Patriots quarterback, who spoke to ESPN.com on condition of anonymity, says that New England pushes the envelope further than most teams and that the Patriots were doing so long before they were caught in September.

NOTHING BUNCH A CHEATERS to me...they still have ZERO SB titles. I should have realized this when the "tuck" rule was magically put in play for them.

I dont ever remember seeing that rule applied before that play....

The thing folks must remember is all of NE's SB wins were nailbiters. STL was a huge upset - if they did this it probably was the difference in the game.

And it's the tip of the iceberg-long time rumors of stealing radio signals and other misconduct as well. The NFL has no desire to dig into this as what is the remedy? It just taints many years.
