honolulu, Hi, USA
GW, FYI - the UH receiver was blocked out of bounds by UAB so he is still eligible if he comes back into the field of play. Also, he caught the ball in bounds so all the more it was the right call. Now, had he caught the ball out of bounds, it would have been ruled incomplete. No homer here. Besides, all the refs were from the PAC-10.

all due respect grid...he didn`t establish himself back in bounds....in other words,he jumped in the air "from out of bounds" before putting a foot "in bounds".......and reestablishing himself back in the field of play...

if that were the case, guys getting pushed out of bounds could run 20 yards down the field and jump back into the air to catch a pass from out of bounds....

i think you have to reestablish yourself in bounds to catch the ball....by that i mean step back onto the field of play before touching the ball...which the hawaii receiver did not do....

honolulu, Hi, USA
I was under the impression he had one foot down but will take your word that the ruling would be otherwise had it been caught in mid air. I do not know the what the rule book says. Anyways, was a terrific game from my viewpoint and my pocket book.

grid...i`m guseeing that that`s the rule in college....i know it`s the case in the nfl.....

i`d be surprised if it wasn`t,but,i don`t have personal knowledge of the rule.....

whatever...hawaii played very well yesterday....and clearly deserved the win...i was glad...i was finally on the right side of a rainbow game.......

i hope that owens gets his chance in the nfl...a few more pounds of muscle, and the guy might be a dangerous little weapon...

honolulu, Hi, USA
I'm with you on Owens - that guy really plays with "heart". Word is that he will probably go undrafted due to size and no flat out speed despite being shifty as hell. Most folks believe that would be in the best interest for him as a free agency contract would help him to "choose" the team he wants to play for. I think he can certainly play in the NFL depending if he goes to the right team. For my money, I'd favor Indianapolis as he would be ideal indoors and be a terror on punt returns as well as on kickoffs. And since he does run precise routes, I'd think Manning would love to have him as a receiver.

As for the rule on the catch, Rivers was pushed out of bounds, and he did try to get back in bounds as soon as he could, therefore it was a good call by the officials. He did not run 5+ more yards down the field, therefore it is a legal catch. Just for your info. and no there was no bad calls by the refs this time, Hawaii plain out beat them, esp. n the second half. Like I said in my previous post, UAB had too much fun in the sun, and in the night as well, wish you guys would have taken my word for that as I did see some of them in the clubs nights prior to the game, but all wells, no one wants to listen to me. As for Owens, he is the man of the football team. He's small but tough as hell. He never fair catches footballs and always tries to make plays. I feel he and Chang will go to the NFL. Not only that, but there's also some other UH players NFL scouts are looking at. Elimimian was finally heathly that game, and it showed as he shut down Roddy White for the most part. The only reason White got that touchdown was because Elimimian was on the other side of the field. And FYI, WHite is an All American and projected first round pick. There's also Keliipiki, the 6-1 280 pouind brusing RB. Hawaii coach June Jones feels he will also play in the NFL as a FB. And normally Junes Jones is right as he has sent at least one player from Hawaii to the NFL each year. Not bad for a small name team.
Watch out, I know people always say teams are gonna be better next year, I I really feel Hawaii is gonna have a better year. They will have all their defensive players coming back, 2 of their DE have a shot at the NFL. They will also be helped out by a weaker WAC schedule. Rivers will fill Owens place nicely as he is much taller at 6-1 and quicker as well. Slotback Nate Ilaoa will be healthy as they say he will move to RB next year. Trust me on this one this guy is bigger and better than Owens and almost has the same style. He has really good hands, and has alot more power. To fill in the void at QB Jack Rolovitch will probably emerge outta the large pool of QBs they have waiting to replace Chang.

The ruling

The ruling

In the pro game once a reciever steps out or is pushed out he can't come back in. In the College game he has to come back in the field of play first. That should have been an illegal catch.

I think you are mistaken, he can come back in if he is PUSHED OUT OF BOUNDS. But he must come back in as soon as possible. And anyways it would not have made a difference. UH still would have scored on that drive and beaten the spread. Stop being a sore loser and suck it up. You must have been one of the many that was crying when UH beat Northwestern and Michigan State. I'll tell you a secret, don't bet against Hawaii at home, shit happens here. But don't worry, I know that half of the gamblers in Hawaii bet on Hawaii while the other half bet on UAB

i actually reseached this stupid rule....sifted through yards of internet copy.......on the day after christmas....my family wasn`t happy....

but it appears that you can,if pushed out of bounds, jump from out of bounds, catch the ball in mid-air without establishing yourself in bounds, and it is considered a legal catch....

sounds stupid.....in the pro`s you have to establish yourself back in bounds...

i`ve never heard of anything sillier...but,that`s how i interpreted it...i was mistaken...i was thinking nfl...

and i agree that hawaii won fair and square vs uab....because they weren`t ever really pressed.....they didn`t need help from the refs....

as opposed to the mich st game...which was reffed horribly in favor of hawaii...even the announcers were joking about it....hawaii got a gift vs mich st....

not so vs uab......they didn`t need help vs uab...

I do agree with you on the ref's juicing the game on Michigan state. However, in some ways they did earn that victory. Refs may have gotten paid off because if Hawaii didn't win, no one would go to the Hawaii Bowl and that equates to a lot of dollars lost in this bowl, almost like the same kind of thing that happened when Iowa State played Texas and should have won. That was a bigger mistake than the Mich State /Hawaii game. Its funny that when it comes down to things its all about the money.
