I've been thinking about this game and the more I think about it, the more I like this particular wager. I don't typically play 1st quarters, but I can make a case for doing so here.

One reason for playing this line is that even poor defenses like Hawaii's have their best shot at making a few stops early simply based on emotion of a big game. As this game wears on I sure do not see the Rainbow Warriors swiss cheese D getting stronger. They will wear down for sure and the Broncos will score in bunches, but I think there is more of a chance that Hawaii can hold off the offensive barrage until later in the first half. Also, hoping that Broncos O takes a while to get into a good flow.

The biggest reason for making a first quarter bet on Hawaii is Timmy Chang. If I am not mistaken this is his one and only shot in front of a national TV audience. This guy was actually getting Heisman nods earlier this year and he should be very motivated to show the nation why he is a top NFL prospect. If ever you would expect to see his best effort, this is the game. I see this Hawaii offense flying high right out of the gates tonight. Sure, Boise had an improved defensive effort last week, but that was against a team that is more of a running attack. The Broncos have not had much success this year defending the pass. Chang and Co. should have their way early.

Call it a gut call or whatever, I just see Hawaii jumping on top early and should hang on for the first quarter cover. Even if Hawaii has some early prosperity like I predict, I just can't trust this putrid defense to not wear down in the later parts of the first half, and likewise in the second half. Thus my reasoning for taking the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in the first quarter getting 4.5.

Good Luck to All,

-JC

didn't think it was possible for hawaii to win much of anything in a game they lost 69-3. but dammit if you didnt have a great call in the 1st quarter. and it really played out just like you said. hawaii looked like they had a pulse for the first 15:00. after that, it was one of the worst efforts from a pretty decent team that ive seen in awhile. thats a baylor- or temple-type effort.
