Health Insurance Cost

Mulling around this afternoon reading various news pieces, I came across this:

The average cost of a family health insurance policy in 2009: $13,375. To put that number in context, if you are an employer, you can hire an employee at the minimum wage for about $15,000 per year.

I assume this number is close to accurate from what I have read before. Most people who get there insurance through work need to know this. I assume some here don't.

What does this say? Appreciate the benefit you have and do a gut check if you lose your job. Will your next employer insure you if you have pre-existing conditions. Some employers won't.

Ask the person who lost there job the next time you say you are satisfied with the insurance you have.

That's one of the points I have in retort to the "I'm happy with my current insurance" folks. I'm sure most of them are, that don't pay much and have most of it paid for them, in lieu of a higher salary. But their employers are getting killed with these numbers, and it's having a very detrimental affect on their businesses - the businesses and people that present these people with these good plans.

More of the I don't care what happens to other people, as long as I'm fine, crap.

Agree Chadman.

On a side note, wish you the best in your new career. Curious if you were able to get good deals on tuition. Hear there is money out there for change of careers?

Right behind you
Insure everyone, eliminate the cost-shifting, and the cost per person/family drops by nearly half. Take out insurance company profits and overhead, and the cost per person/family drops by 2/3.

That's affordable.

Or...listen to the Insurance companies and their paid whores in Congress, and their paid shills on talk radio and bankrupt many.

Thanks, wolf. You're acquainted with Captain Crunch, right? Thought he mentioned that. I was able to spend a Chiefs game with him and his parents last year (or year before - can't remember now), first time I'd met him in person. Had a great day, they are really nice people.

I didn't get any deals on tuition, although I possibly could have had I gone into some kind of retraining, one or two year type of thing, which didn't interest me at all. I'm very employable in the field I'm in (when the economy and advertising come back), and a couple others... just thought it was time to move into something I could unconditionally like doing (so I think).

I've benefited to a degree from the economic conditions we are in these days, and have taken advantage of what was out there. It's against my nature to take things from others, but in this case, I decided to get what I could while I went to school, while working as much as they would allow me to. Partial unemployment for quite a while, while working, plus employer paying a good percent of my COBRA insurance. This will end before too long, and we'll be in tougher straights, but my wife does very well, and we're in good shape, emotionally and financially. Mainly because we've made good choices and ALWAYS paid down (or paid off) debt. We could have been in tough shape had we not lived the way we had.

Are you still in KC? Maybe we can hook up for a couple pops some time, when I go back to Missouri to visit my kids.

Thanks for the reply. I'm in Iowa City now. Thought about you whem we went up for a Twins game in July. Was going to come for the PGA as I get free tickets to all PGA events if I want them. Wasn't feeling up to it then. I use to manage golf courses and evaluate courses for purchase before retiring.

HR 676 single payer

No co-pays or deductibles-- what's the catch? Will I actually pay less for health care?

There is no catch. Both families and employers will pay significantly less for health care.
Currently, the average family of four covered by an employer-provided health care plan spends roughly $4,225 on health care each year, including premiums, services, prescription drugs and supplies. This figure does not include the annual Medicare payroll tax, currently at 1.45%. Under the plan created by H.R. 676, a family of four making the median income of $56,200 would pay about $2,700 ($225.00 a month) in payroll tax for all health care costs. No deductibles, no co-pays, no worrying about catastrophic coverage.
Employers who provide health insurance currently pay, on average, 74% of employee health premiums. For a family of four, the average employer share is $8,510 per year. Under H.R. 676, the employer pays a 4.75% payroll tax, not a premium to health insurance companies. For an employee making the median family income of $56,200 annually, the employer would pay roughly $2,700.
Estimates taken from: Employer Health Benefits 2006 Annual Survey, Kaiser Family Foundation and Health Research and Educational Trust; Consumer Expenditure Survey, U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics; and Study by the Center for Economic Research and Policy.

To answer your question you and Da Base will pay the same as before --nothing--only diff you will expand those on the free lunch wagon by bout 10 million--

Only prob is someone will have to foot the bill as they do for current welfare recipiants--that would be the tax payor--

oh I forgot--fines -fees-taxes on corps passed on to consumer--won't raise "the middle class" output--one penny--according to Gumby.

--at least he finally defines "his" definition of middle class--as only ones not effected are those I pointed out above.-and even the lowest on the pole will be hit on raise in consumer prices.

You will pay less under single payer HR 676. It will cost 600 billion to cover everyone. The US now pays 2.4 trillion a year for health care, do the math.

No co-pays, no deductibles, no premiums. Vision, dental and drugs included. Go to any doctor/hospital, never see a bill. Lose your job, move across the country, get cancer, you're covered.

Worried about people on welfare getting treatment, you pay for that now with high premiums. You're not worried about welfare that Haliburton and Blackwater is getting.

I can see why insurance companies are against single payer, a single payer system kills them. The only reason that most republicans are against it is that they are stupid.

Tammy Baldwin, congresswoman D-WI, introduced a resolution that states, if states want to enact a single payer health care system they can. Will be included in any health bill.

So blue states will have medicare for all and the red states will have what they have now or whatever the insurance companies can think up.

Well we can't ask Greg Missman that question KC. He re-enlisted in the Army so his family would have healthcare coverage after losing his job as a computer consultant. Unfortunately, he was killed only one month after his deployment to Afghanistan. You have to wonder how many more Greg Missman's have enlisted for the same reason. The failure of this country to provide healthcare coverage for all is a national disgrace.

So you're accusing his father of lying when he says his son's primary reason for re-enlisting was so that his family would have healthcare coverage? What kind of a person would accuse a grieving father of that?

You're offended by this post? Who gives a fuck? I'm offended by every single Republican and Blue Dog Democrat who doesn't give a shit about 47 million uninsured Americans and the millions more who are under-insured.

You gotta problem with this video? Take it up with CNN, Einstein.

But really Rusty, save your phony outrage for someone who gives a shit. It's a disgrace that our country's so rich it can spend $1 trillion waging illegal wars and $500 billion a year on "defense", yet it can't even provide basic healthcare coverage to its own citizens. It's a national disgrace.
