Yes, I do realize that a few, such as azbob, would rather celebrate their "free will" and the "ability to independently make a decision that is best for them," but I just can't bring myself to be as callous.
Instead, I tend to focus on the desperation, loneliness and utter despair that they must have felt - so much so that it resulted in these actions.
Truly heartbreaking.
