whats up bud-
been capping the mac for years now with great results in both hoops and football. on a real good run in mac ball again this year. just wanted to kind of "compare notes" with you, as you seem to have a grasp on the conference as well.

regardless of conference subdivision, and assuming every key player is healthy, whats your order for the top 5 in the whole conference? from time to time, i like to do this to see where each team progresses from prior years, as well as in season.

thx

gman

ahhh a fellow MACster. Iam so glad you came around.....I have to put up with the Anti-MAC people in here.....

Iam sure youve seen the arguments between me and the help of TCSN against allllllll the Big Ten lovers.

My Top 5 in the MAC right now...

said it last week....and I stand by my word...

1) Northern Illinois <~~ Great D
2) Miami(OH) <~~ They are!
3) Marshall <~~ Even with Leftwich
4) BG <~~ Too many holes
5) Toledo <~~ Young

For us MAC fans...the last few weeks are gonna be soo good. Especailly in the West. Toledo wins out...then we are in baby!! I think we beat BG at home...but going to Dekalb is GONNA BE SO TOUGH!!!!!

I like our chances though...

thanks for reply. interesting rankings. i see it this way:

1) marshall.....how can you not have them number one when they have as strong a hold on this conference as florida state has on the acc?...until someone knocks them off, theres no way they cant be #1...period...miami was beaten pretty soundly by marshall without leftwich...and marshall ripped niu a new ass in dekalb last year when both teams had virtually the same personel as they have this year...this team is the best until proven otherwise...the receiving corps they have, when healthy, is sick...marriott, watts, davis as a 3-wideout set? thats unfair.

2) bowling green....niu caught bgsu at the right time...niu wouldnt have beaten bgsu a month ago, but the scheduling worked out for em...turner is a freakin truck...kid runs hard as hell and chunks out 5 yards a pop with ease...meyer is doing an amazing job at bowling green...robert redd is right on the level of darius watts, just without the hype...that kid can ball...was amazing in high school, and is having a great year this year as well...harris is why that team is so good...he's joshua cribbs with a more accurate arm....not sure if you saw the niu/bgsu game, but bgsu didnt play poorly at all...game was pretty tight, and harris put the ball on the money damn near every time..never seen bgsu drop so many balls...credit niu- theyre solid, but i dont think bgsu is inferior to them

3) northern illinois....their strength is obvious as you know...they come right at you with the run, and make you stop it...theyve been like that for the last few years...their qb does just enough to get it done, and they have good receivers even though their backs get most of the attention...hell, mccareins was damn good for them a few yrs ago...im still not convinced this is an "elite" team yet, but theyre climing the ladder quickly

4) toledo....well coached team....theyre a program that as you know just pumps out quality running backs...theyre getting good production from their backs even w/taylor gone...their receivers are REALLY underrated...jones is efficient- hes no bolden, but he doesnt have to be...he doesnt make a ton of mistakes...just a good team...and theyre only gonna get better....well coached team now just like they were when pinkel was there...the gotta find a kicker though... that kid they got now freaking blows

5) miami.....yep, miami #5....i just cant see why people are sold on this team...turner absolutely destroyed their run defense a few weeks ago....marshall owns this team....they are just so inconsistent...they always have respectable showing in the non-conference....almost beat ohio state a few yrs ago...good showing vs iowa this year...good showing vs michigan last year... but then once they get into conference play- they are a potential upset victim waiting to happen....they never hammer teams like they should...roethlisberger is a solid quarterback, and hes only gonna get better...eventually by the time hes a senior, miami will really "contend" but theyre still not in marshall's league yet....they have no defense and that continues to hurt them

outside looking in:

if akron had ANY DEFENSE, they could make noise, but owens just tries to outscore teams, and it aint working.

central florida could EASILY be in the top 3 in the league, but they just never "settled in" this year. that offense is the real deal, and they should be in the mix in the coming years

western michigan wont be down long. too good a program to struggle like this. theyll be back

thanks for your thoughts hellah. have seen some of your posts in the past and theyre on point. mac is a solid league. the upper echelon teams are as good as the middle to bottom of the power conferences. only problem with the mac is the bottom feeders of the mac shouldnt even be in D-1. eastern michigan and buffalo are an embarrassment. both teams are a joke. central is pathetic too, and ohio is lame. they gotta get more balanced before they get the respect they deserve

gman - appreciate talking to a MAC person....and I love having these kind of discussions with other MACsters.....

Now that I have a bit more time...I`ll enlighten my reasons on my picks....not that Iam saying yours are bad, because you have excellent reasons on why they are there...and I agree on those points made....

Northern Illinois - Iam sold on this defense. Vince Thompson and Larry Williams are going to the NFL no doubt. Ive said this before, and will say it again..Vince Thompson is the best DB I have ever seen in the MAC....better then Blaine Bishop. They play hard nose defense...and they have GREAT speed. Wisconsin got a taste of that speed when NIU recorded 10 sacks on them :eek: I was even more impressed with the D when they played Wake early in the year and on a crucial 2 point conversion play...they stopped Wake from winning the game...despite giving up all those points. As for the Western Illinois game...Williams nor Thompson was playing due to injuries from chop blocks :mad: from the Wake game

As for the offense...I was worried when Josh Halbi was the new QB. And they didnt have "The Thrill" Hill at WR anymore. But I thought I would be good with Thomas Hammock...and to see him go down killed me. But Micheal Turner...I mean wow this guy is a Corey Dillion type of back...hard nose, strong, hits the holes fast type of player. And the WRs have been overachieving in my eyes.

==============================================

Miami(OH) - Terry Hep....well sometimes you stratch your head and wonder...WTF is he doing?!?! I`ll never understand but I got to start with Ben Rothlisberger. Ive said before..I played against Big Ben in high school in JV and Varisty....and he burned us both times. I had to cover Mike Iritii who is also at Miami...but not part of the 3 amigos. Big Ben can do it all....and I think he`s the 2nd best roll out QB in the nation behind Brad Banks of Iowa. Big Ben can throw on the run...downfield...accross the grains...can tuck and run and of course punt. Now of course he`s only a sophomore soooo he`s still learning and by playing teams like Michigan, Iowa, and LSU that just makes him better. And he`s a great guy too!! The 3 amigos is a great combination...last night they kept on talking about Micheal Larkin.....but Jason Branch is the real deal....he`s going to the NFL with Darious. I think the 3 amigos can compete at any level of any conference. Luke Clemens proved me wrong big time.....I thought he couldnt be a quality back....but he`s proved me wrong and has done nothing but put up numbers

The defense I think is pretty good for being in this conference. They stopped Toledo dominate running game and twice on 4th and 1. What they lack is a good pass rush though....I think they get one more pass rusher and a good DB like Vince Thompson...then that D could be very good.

==============================================

Marshall - Well the offensive speaks for itself...they pass first run second..no surprise....I saw Leftwich in person a number of times and continue to be impressed with his arm and poise

There defense blows...I mean its terrible!!! Yancy Satterwhite and Orlando Washington are the only people on that D thats prevent any more points being up on the score board. Nothing much I can say on this D except they suck...

As for Marshall - they are cheaters....plain and simple...they dont deserve ANY of those MAC crowns nor the Bowl Births. They got caught once...and they got caught again...when will this shit end. I dont want the MAC to be known like the SEC...The fans are worse then Ohio St fans and they think they rule the world.

Why the fawk did they get to have 4 straight MAC Champ games in Hunington?!?! Fawk that program :thefinger

==============================================

Bowling Green - The offense is explosive! Josh Harris is a 3 dimensional QB ...has a good arm...good approach to the game....leadership...and has the ability to roll out and throw. CAn also tuck the ball...which is always good. Joe Alls isnt a bad back either...he hasnt done anything to impress me like Chester Taylor has done...but I think his success is coming from conservative defesive schemes. I like Robert Redd alot. I think he can make it to the NFL if he works on a few things and turns his routes much better...he`s been known to drop a few open ones...more then excpected for a WR.

The defense is the weakness here. No depth what so ever.....they have so many holes...you can run, pass, play action, do whatever you want with this defense....its not as bad as Marshalls buttttt people are finding ways to defeat it...just like people are finding ways to beat Va Techs D. BGs secondary is sick!!! They cant cover a kicker if he went out for a pass.

BGs special teams has improved BIG TIME from last year...kudos for them on that...

==============================================

Toledo - Ahhhh yes my home town. Well what we got there is some wierd things...Iam still upset that Miam ruined our home winning streak but nothing we can do about it. We have the biggest O-Line in the nation and I dont think anybody can stop our running game...Pitt couldnt even stop it. Some how Miami found a way and hopefully Stutz found a way to adjust to it. Our program has been known to produce an unreal amount of backs....year after year we come out with all-MAC and every other year or so we have an all-American back...recently with Chester Taylor and Weseasn Tait (best ever). Our receivers are undersized and underrated...Carl Ford has stepped it up big time and our stupidddd bubble screen that we throw on every single down seems to work every single time...which means one thing....our WRs know how to block downfield. IAm very surpised with Brian Jones...Iam impressed on his TD to INT ratio and his completion percentage....he`s a pretty good QB and people (including myself) did not give him a chance. Iam glad that he has proved me wrong...Iam excited to watch Cedric Stevens next year though.

Our D is actually not bad. We lost our entire starting 4 D-Lineman from last year including a good friend of mine, Sameer Hamood. Tom Ward has become the linebacker that we all anticipated. Iam glad he decided to go to Toledo rather then a Big 10 school. Our secondary stinks...nothing we can do about that lol

Our kicking game...dont get me started on that....

==============================================

Overlooked...

Kent St for sure...most people havent seen nor do they know who Josh Cribbs is. You being from Cleveland Iam sure youve seen him and isnt he just impressive! If Kent St had any sort of D, that would be a different team

UCF, they blow leads...simple as that. They arent discipline for shit and they run there mouths. Lately they havent said anything becuase schools like Toledo punked them and ran over 300 yards on them. Its a shame too cuz Ryan Shnieder and Doug Gabrial are REALLY good.

Western Michigan...cant look at the record here...they lost so many close games against Purdue (Shit calls), Central Florida, Western Michigan, and Northern....I love Jason Babin...he`s a great D end....as good as they get since Jason Taylor went to Akron...Chad Munson is a good young QB....had he played the whole game against Va Tech they woulda covered :mad: And what can ya say about Mobolaji Afariogun. Western just keeps pumping out NFL TEs.....he`ll be one of the top TEs picked...

just a few scattered replies:

1) re: niu defense. you were IMPRESSED with them vs wake forest? my god dude, i had northern moneylined that game at +110 and that was a freakin miracle that they won that game. wake forest absolutely destroyed northern's defense. sure they stopped em on the 2pt play, but northern got worked that game. they couldnt stop anyone. and the fact that they lost to western illinois kinda re-affirms to me that theyre not quite elite just yet. good teams dont have those slip-ups. period. niu is on the rise in the conference, but theyre not there yet imo

2) re: defensive backs. how soon have we forgotten dwight smith? easily the best mac DB ive seen in my time. just a sick athlete who did everything. and he's making plays on sundays now.

3) i guess we'll have to agree to disagree on miami. i just dont think that team is anything to write home about. good personel, but they dont get the most out of their players. miami had their best chance to dethrone marshall yesterday, and the herd took it to em again.

good points and discussion

ohh cant forget about another overloooked team..

Central Michigan...they have made me a great amount of coin this year. They shoulda beat Indiana and Marshall. Blew leads and chances...I love Derrick Vickers...he`s a baby Vick and hopefully he`ll learn. Robbie Mixon is a great back and showed it in that 377 yard performce against...*sigh* Eastern Michigan

Not to but in here (but I will anyway). Gman, you bring up NIU's game against Wake Forest......wasn't that game almost in the last century?? BTW, WF does have an excellent run game. How can you take a team that loses by double digits to Akron? I'm sure people will say this is sour grapes but I was NOT that impressed by Marshall the other night. The calls at the end were only part of it; ALL GAME LONG Marshall was getting away with murder. Realistically, since NIU's win was in DeKalb and BG has been tough all year, I think you have to put BG second. IMO, BG would definitely handle Marshall, Leftwich or no Leftwich.

valuist:

thx for reply.

re: niu defense....my comment about northern being horrid on defense was in response to hellah saying he was impressed with niu's defense vs wake forest, especially on the 2pt play for the win...as a niu backer that game, i was thrilled they got the money, but they whole night, wake absolutely destroyed niu's defense...wake's a lower tier acc team and that should not happen, especially on your home field...wake did whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted...yes the game was in the season opener...niu's defense has stiffened a little since then.

re: marshall...everyone has their opinion, but what does it say for miami when they couldnt stop marshall at all, even without leftwich?...hill had all the time in the world to throw, his receivers were getting open all night...their draw plays were getting 5-7 yards a pop...one player is not a HUGE deal, but if leftwich is in there, miami doesnt even sniff potential victory
