Hop on Hop off is the best way although my wife and I rented a car for the four days we were there only because we wanted to tour the east coast wineries. We didn't have much trouble parking around DC. You just have to pay for it.

Thanks Joker ! We are not planning to venture out of DC. Hop on site sez $ 55 ea. for 48 hr. pass, seems reasonable. Parking at the hotel is $ 30-40 ea. day ( that stings a bit ) Hope to see as much as possible with out killing ourselves.
Sport give me your buddies name & number I will look him up, maybe we can just drop our bags at his place.

We used the metro system. Goes near all the major attractions, very easy to navigate.A $14 day pass has unlimited use. Expect to do a good deal of walking around the National mall though. We saw parking available too but only for 2hr terms. Have a good time!!!!

Thanks Cricket ! We are thinking of doing Hop On 1 day then using the Metro the next 2 days. Looked at the National Mall looks overwhelming, I know after about 6 hrs.out & about I start to fade away.

Did a long weekend in DC last summer. It is fucking HOT and Humid, bring Gold Bond, cause its a lot of walking too.

WE did the Hop On/Off deal the second of our 3 days and we liked it. If you want to use it, it is there, if you want to walk, great. Also, it was great to get to the further out places like Arlington. Plus, some of the guides inform you on some interesting "facts".

My favorite thing was the Newseum. It was awesome. I could have spend an entire day in there reading the articles from papers across the country. The display they had for 9/11 was unreal and they had a sports illustrated exhibit and movie that was fantastic.

As for dining, I enjoyed the Washington Harbour area and the Georgetown waterfront . The food wasnt to die for, but the beer tasted great and it was a fun atmosphere and right on the water. Plus Coeds.

I kicked and screamed like a little baby when my wife decided to we were going to spend a long weekend in DC, cause I had already done it in high school, but it was a good time and Id go back.

My last tip is people love FREE shit, so the free museums are always jammed packed. We waited at one of the Smiths forever just to see the First Lady dresses throughout the years, yes this was obviously my choice.

Hey have fun. Also, there are some great bars in the Dupont circle area.

Finally, the Metro is very easy to use to all of these areas.

If you like awesome upscale Mexican food, try Rosa Mexicano on 7th street. The first time I went to DC I rented a car and they upgraded me to a Crown Vic. Trying to find a parking place for that boat was brutal.

I just use WMATA system ever since. Kind of sucks when you are lugging a suitcase and computer around but I would not rent a car there ever again. Taxi or trains.

Have a great time!

Thanks Pepper & Hed ! We are staying near GW Univ. looks like a metro station is fairly close but everything looks close until you start pounding the pavement.
Hedman part of the deal is that we spend a couple of day's in Cooperstown one of my favorites.

FYI ....The Metro station is in the middle of the National mall. It's probably a good mile walk each way from there to the Lincoln memorial on one end and another mile to the Capitol Building on the other end. You can't get in the Capitol Building without some sort of pass from your senator or something, so don't walk up the hill for nothing like we did. The space center was pretty cool but school was still in session so there were only kids from school groups and not all the vacationers.Natural History Museum was worth it too but took a few hours. Metro stops at Arlington that has a trolley tour and it stops at various parts of the cemetary. You dont want to climb around there on foot unless you're twenty something. Felt safe and everything on the metro
,it's pretty quick, exchanges are all color coded ,there is plenty of info on routes and it's only crowded during rush hours so you might have to stand and hold on. We we're there for 2 days and didn't see everything cause our feets couldn't take it.
