Delaware seeks to stop five-game losing streak in CAA matchup
Its lopsided win Jan. 15 in Newark notwithstanding, Delaware is in no position to take James Madison lightly in the schools' Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball game tonight in Harrisonburg, Va.
Delaware (7-14 overall, 4-6 CAA) takes a five-game losing streak into the JMU Convocation Center for its 7 p.m. encounter with the Dukes (4-14, 2-8).
The Blue Hens haven't won since their 75-40 rout of JMU at the Carpenter Center, their most decisive win in four CAA seasons. JMU's 40 points were the fewest scored by a Division I opponent against Delaware since Colgate had 39 in a Dec. 27, 1985, loss to the Hens.
"We expect Madison to be competitive and ready to play,'' Delaware coach David Henderson said. "It's been a while since we've gotten a win, so we have no reason to be complacent about anything. In this league, you don't get a night off. We know we have to compete.''
Since its defeat in Newark, JMU has pulled off the CAA's biggest upset, stunning Virginia Commonwealth 66-58 in Richmond three days before VCU handed Old Dominion its first league loss.
"It's going to come around as long as we stick together and coach still believes in us,'' Delaware junior guard Rulon Washington said. "It'll be a tough one. They're doing better. We've got to come in hungry, like that [Jan. 15 win] never happened.''
JMU is led by sophomore guard Ray Barbosa (15.3 ppg) and sophomore forward Cavell Johnson (9.6 ppg and 5.9 rpg). The Dukes are last among the 10 CAA teams in scoring (58 points per game), field-goal shooting (40 percent) and rebounding (32 per game).
