Coach Pat Riley announced that Mike James will start at point guard tonight with Travis Best out with a sprained ankle.
Riley is a big supporter of Anthony Carter, but Carter is inferior in shooting percentage and assist-to-turnover ratio to both Best and James. James averages 8.7 points and 2.8 assists per game as a reserve, and should improve slightly on those numbers as a starter.

Desmond Mason will start for the second consecutive game tonight.
Mason started for Rashard Lewis (flu) in the last game. Lewis is back tonight, but Brent Barry will miss the game with patella tendinitis. Kenny Anderson was a possibility to start in place of Barry, but Mason will get the nod.

Coach Doc Rivers said Hill will return either Saturday or Monday, while Hill himself said he expected to be back Monday or Wednesday. Hill has now missed a week, and is still experiencing some pain in his ankle.

Dale Davis missed Thursday's practice in Chicago for unspecified reasons, leaving his status for tonight's game in question.
Team spokesman Mike Hanson said Davis missed practice because he was sick and did travel with the team for tonight's game in Boston. If coach Maurice Cheeks decides to hold Davis out of tonight's game, Arvydas Sabonis would get the start at center.
