You can?t even apply for food stamps until 30 days after your job loss or tragic event. Now, our gross income is reviewed every three months and our benefit is increased or decreased based on the three months before. Right now our family of five receives $250 per month. (Editor?s note: the 76 -year-old food stamp program, which is is now officially known as SNAP, or Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program, currently provides benefits to more than 45 million people.)

Any cash is used to take care of the things on our list below. You?ll notice a fast food stop for a small treat for our girls. Some might say, ?Well there you go. If you weren?t spending on fast food you?d have something left.? There is the perception that if you?re poor you shouldn?t have any enjoyment until you can afford it. We don?t throw caution to the wind but we do our best to insert a little joy into the little peoples? lives despite this harsh season.

The majority of the time we eat at home and pack snacks and even full meals if we know we will be out for most of the day. We went from August 9 to October 9 with no installment because the food stamp office had miscalculated our income. We were denied Food Stamps until we filed an appeal, which the office lost track of. In the meantime we had help from friends and family members that asked us for grocery lists and brought us the groceries. We cannot directly receive cash even if it is used right away for our needs. If we do receive cash we report it as income at our review. It may reduce our stamp total, but we?d rather be honest.

Sunday

1. Gas: $45.00

Fuel is our biggest regular expense. We need it to meet clients and sometimes pick them up for showings.

2. Scope Mouthwash: $3.73

My hubby recently had a tooth extracted. He needed the mouthwash to deal with bad breath as a result. Dealing with clients face to face means he needs good breath!

3. Lunchables: $5.00

Our older daughter goes to a charter school. Though it is a part of the public school system, lunch assistance is not in the school?s budget. So every few days we use our food stamp card to purchase her lunch this way. We purchased two, they were on sale on that day.

Tuesday

4. Taco Bell: $5.98

Long day for hubby. He was too hungry to wait until after work to eat and was too far from home to dash back to get a bite.

5. Gas: $40.00

Our second tank in a few days but I am grateful for the expense. Hubs has a new client he needs to meet with in the morning outside of the metro area.

6. Rent: $1,400

Got to have shelter. I used to dread paying rent until there were times we did not have money to cover it. I simply rejoice when we have enough money to pay.

Wednesday

7. McDonald?s: $11.47

We had a little money leftover so decided to surprise the girls after long day. They had gone without a treat. They really enjoy McDonalds and got toys. It really is the small things that make these little people happy.

Thursday

8. Tooth Extraction: $100

A broken tooth was causing my husband a lot of pain. We contacted a friend who is a dentist and he agreed to pull it. It is expenses like these that you try not to worry about, but you know they are inevitable. I just pray we have the money available when theses times come. We had the money for the extraction but it cuts into the funds we have available until the next commission check.

9. Gauze: $7.68

Hubs needed it to stuff his new mouth vacancy. It was messy. I was glad we had funds available to get it. Our dentist friend tried to give him an ample supply to avoid him having to make the purchase (he knows our situation) but the leakage caused him to go through it within a few hours. We do our best to stretch the free stuff but sometimes it?s not enough and you have to make choices.

Sunday

10. Bleach and cleaning spray: $7.78

I was flat out of both. The bleach is to keep white clothes nice and sparkly. The spray is to keep down the germs as the change of seasons bring on all kinds of stuff from the outside. Especially with a school aged child.

?

Favorite purchase? My favorite is rent. We?ve been in some tough spots and unable to pay our rent at times. It feels good to have that taken care of this month.

Any regrets? I have no regrets but much gratitude for making it another week and having our needs supplied because what we use, we need.

GOP intends to stop all this entitlement shit.

Let them live in homeless shelters.

Ted Cruz mentioned the Palin experiment.
