Well I can tell you my dad fought the good fight for years walking on nothing but bone on bone. A few weeks after his knee replacement, he was mad at himself for not doing it much sooner. My FIL just had hip replacement a few weeks ago and they had him up and walking within hours and he did not even need pain meds after the fact during rehab. Hate to see people suffer needlessly, good luck man!!!

Why are you so adamant about not having it done if it will improve your quality of life?

Hips are easy, knees are hard. LMK if any questions; I'm well versed in both procedures and recovery.

my Dad will be 76 in 2 weeks and is in the AL Hall of Fame from 35 years of officiating high school football ... he has had BOTH knees replaced ... still has Bama season tix and drives from Huntsville every home game, tailgates and walks to the stadium, up all those ramps and his seats are 3 rows from the top

my mother had it a few years back and she still does national level orienteering in her age group.

because of our healthcare system whole operation was free and only thing it didn't
cover were new running shoes with 1/3 inch higher heel... care covers just one shoe pair/year.
she runs now better than ever and i can't keep up with her at all, she's +60...

My 83 year old grandfather had both knees replaced. He could not play golf or go up steps without discomfort until he replaced his knees. Two weeks after surgery he was chipping golf balls in backyard and played 9 holes about a month after.

A year later he shot his age for 18 holes.

I'm curious as to why it is not an option for you? Do you despise mobility?

this is a rarity to have such a quick recovery, especially for knees. like six five said knees tend to be much worse than hips. recovery depends a lot on pain control and activity/therapy tolerance. I have worked in several short term rehab facilities and have worked with both quite extensively. Some people do great and others not so much just like anything else

Oh ok. Maybe old school has heard a lot of long term recovery experiences then.

probably but i bet he can handle it, he's young enough. some people are afraid of going under. I didn't want it to sound like it's dreadful, it's usually a bit longer recovery than your grand father but most do have beneficial results

I fear never coming off the table...

plus 90days of rehab for the knees and it will drive me insane...

would rather work then ache than go 90 days without doing what I love to do..

have been asking about the knees for years..

lotta stories about painful rehab..

maybe one day...but for now will live w/the screwdriver sticking in my hip and knees pain for now.

This is true. I had a hip done and it was super easy. I have heard a lot of tough recovery stories about knees, and knees tend to hurt more at least I've heard.

kneifl

In most cases, people who need knees replaced are obese. Their mobility is impaired anyway, and when you add a big ass knee immobilizer brace to it that will cause back pain or make existent back pain worse, a lot of people don't do well. A total knee replacement is also fairly bloody, and many become somewhat anemic which leads to more problems. My experience is that patients with bmis of 30 or less and without co-morbidities usually do fine and have a good experience, and I think OS probably fits this category. It's not a magic fix, so the 350 pound old women who can't walk and have a total knee are probably going to only see negligible results.

Hip replacements are even better now bc the surgeons can often use an anterior approach and avoid cutting all that big lateral leg musculature which improves recovery times.
