Marine I could be mistaken but that exact time frame (early 90s) is when the market became completely over-saturated with card brands.

over saturation with the brands and different products each brand puts out every year may very well be true. but the scarcity of youth collectors theory is not true.

the problem is with the companies needing to make their nut I think. they price their stuff so high and instead of getting an Andrew Luck autograph or something you get some fucking offensive lineman they paid 25 cents per autograph and got him to sign 5,000

yea, that's what i meant to say - right around 92-93 it went BOOM and exploded with new brands and offshoots from those major lines.

People under 40 are from the "throw away" generation. Go to most auctions and antique shows and you aren't going to see many young people. They aren't going to be very nostalgic at all. No matter what it is including cards. ..I still go and "set up" at a couple shows, but seldom see younger collectors.......Talk about over production. In mid 90's i thought I'd go collect every rookie card of local talent Joey Galloway (FB). The dude had well over 100 different cards. I don't remember who the "studs" were that year, but they probably had 25-30 more different inserts, etc....Over production and greed killed the collecting hobby

Yeah I stopped in the Mid 80's when they came out with 3 company's....I liked it when it was just Topps....Remember the error cards by Fleer in 81 ....think Schmidt and Rose was on one. Got a Bourque and Walter Payton Rookie card and think they are worth something

When ERROR cards became popular they started making more of them. :mj07:

I have a box of football cards from 20 years ago in my attic  I used to buy packs and throw away the common cards and keep the refractor cards, special cards. Haven't been to a card show or bought a pack for 20 years now. I enjoyed it back then, ashamed kids these days don't have the priviledge

I have friends with literally 10 of THOUSANDS of cards..

they can't get squat for them..

attempts to sell are not even worth the time to set up the ad.

unless they are autographed or have some sort of memorabilia on them they are pretty much worthless. unless it is very unique old card like a Gretzky rookie.

I have complete sets of Topps baseball cards from 1972-1990. At one time they were worth a serious amount of money and I had no interest in selling them.
Now I couldn't give them away and I'd like to...:mj07:
Kidding about giving them away but there is certainly not much monetary value attached to them anymore.

Back in the late 90's and early 2000's, I completed a set of 1993 Topps Finest Refractors (baseball)... only a 199 card set, but they only made 241 of each refractor. This was the first set in which refractors were available (and of course companies went crazy after this)....

Depressing - when I completed the set (all in PSA 9 or higher) it was worth $20K. Now, I'd be lucky to get $8K for it.....

Hopefully it'll come back some day, being the first refractor set - and filled with mostly star players.....

Fun set to have though!

I still get people all the time asking me about their "OLD" cards. I ask, "How old?" The reply is always late 80's early 90's. i tell them the best way is to find your local weekly live auction in your community and get what you can from them. Hopefully you can find the unknowledgable gandfather or grandmother who thinks they may end up being worth something. :0008

These two statements are contradictory.

no it isnt.

online business is very big in certain areas.

and people only want autographed or memorabilia cards. this isnt 1970 where a regular "base" card is worth something. base cards now are worth absolutely nothing. unless you manage to get the whole set of base cards from the product, then maybe youre looking at 5 bucks if youre lucky.

people join together and open cases of cards as a "group". every person pays like 1/30th of the cost and everyone gets a random team. then the guy opens the case via live stream and you get whatever cards belong to your team.

this is huge and has just recently started in the last few years.

internet business is much much more successful than brick and mortar stores.
