Ottawa Senators (0-1-0) at Toronto Maple Leafs (0-1-1), 7 p.m.

A pair of winless clubs will try to get in the win column tonight, as the Toronto Maple Leafs host the rival Ottawa Senators at Air Canada Centre.

The Maple Leafs are 0-1-1 this year after dropping an overtime test against Montreal to open the season and then losing a decision Saturday at Washington. Ottawa was handed a loss Saturday evening by the New York Rangers in its season opener at Madison Square Garden.

Tonight, Toronto will try to avoid going winless in its opening three games for the first time since posting an 0-1-2 record at the start of the 2005-06 campaign.

The Leafs were dealt a 6-4 loss in D.C. on Saturday, as Alexander Semin scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Capitals. Alexei Ponikarovsky and Mikhail Grabovski each scored a goal and dished out an assist for the Maple Leafs.

Niklas Hagman and Lee Stempniak had a goal apiece while Vesa Toskala allowed three goals on only eight shots in the first period before being pulled in favor of Jonas Gustavsson, who turned aside 16-of-19 shots over the final two frames. Gustavsson is an NHL rookie after playing the last two years in the Swedish Elite League.

"We didn't do a very good job in front of Vesa," Toronto coach Ron Wilson said. "It gave me an opportunity to get Jonas a little bit of experience in a tough building and he made some really good saves."

Wilson has not revealed whether Toskala or Gustavsson will get the start tonight.

Tonight's test marks the first of two straight on home ice for the Leafs, who will also welcome defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Ottawa, meanwhile, was handed a 5-2 setback in its season opener against the Rangers. Brandon Dubinsky had two goals and an assist to lead a dominating effort by the Blueshirts.

Daniel Alfredsson and Peter Regin scored for Ottawa, which hasn't lost its first two games of a season since going 0-2 to begin the 1995-96 campaign.

Pascal Leclaire, making his Sens debut after spending most of last season with Columbus, allowed four goals on 33 shots in defeat.

The game also marked the first games in an Ottawa sweater for Jonathan Cheechoo and Milan Michalek, who both came over from San Jose in the deal that sent winger Dany Heatley to the Sharks. Neither Cheechoo nor Michalek registered a point, and both combined to finish minus-three in the game.

After tonight, the Sens will return to Canada's capital city for a four-game homestand. The residency begins Thursday when Ottawa stages its home-opener against the New York Islanders.

Toronto won four of six meetings against the Senators in 2008-09 and the Leafs have taken eight of 11 overall in the series. Ottawa has dropped three straight and five of its last six games in Toronto.

The Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs both missed the playoffs last season. Although it's very early, neither club has showed so far that things will be different in 2009-10.

The Senators will try to end a three-game skid at Air Canada Centre when they take on their provincial rivals Tuesday night.

Last season marked the first time since the Senators came into the league in 1992-93 that postseason hockey did not take place in Ontario. Ottawa (0-1-0) and Toronto (0-1-1) both missed the playoffs and each revamped their rosters to correct that.

Those changes didn't pay off for the Senators in their opener Saturday.

Alex Kovalev made his Ottawa debut and had more penalty minutes (two) than shots (none) in a 5-2 road loss to the Rangers. Fellow newcomer Jonathan Cheechoo also failed to score.

"It's the beginning of the season," Kovalev told the Senators' official Web site. "We looked exactly like a team that was really anxious and so happy to start the season again because the summer was so long. The harder you try, the worse it gets and that's exactly what happened."

It was also a tough debut for goaltender Pascal Leclaire, who stopped all 14 shots with the Senators on the penalty kill. Leclaire, though, stopped 15 of 19 shots at even strength.

Captain Daniel Alfredsson and Peter Regin scored for Ottawa.

"It's nothing that's going to happen overnight," Alfredsson said. "It's a process. I like the feeling we have in the room and in practices, it's been good. Now we're looking forward to playing another game."

Toronto was last in the leagues in goals allowed last year and has seen those woes continue through two games this year. Vesa Toskala was replaced by Jonas Gustavsson at the start of the second period after yielding three goals on eight shots Saturday in a 6-4 loss at Washington.

Coach Ron Wilson would not announce whether Toskala or Gustavsson will start Tuesday, criticizing the pressure-filled climate surrounding the Maple Leafs.

"It's not a microscope, it's an electron microscope," Wilson said. "It's awful hard to feel good about yourself when you're always being questioned. We don't question anything about what Vesa's done.

"We're just going to put in the guy who's playing best at the moment. That's why I said you just have to come to the game and see who comes out of the tunnel first."

The Maple Leafs trailed 6-1 after two periods. Gustavsson saved 16 of 19 shots in his NHL debut.

"It's a combination of things, but it's so unfair just to point fingers at the goalie when other guys are getting beat up the ice for 3-on-1s," Wilson said. "The goalie didn't yell at somebody to fall down or make a bad decision to create a 3-on-1."

Toronto won all three home games against Ottawa last year, with Alexei Ponikarovsky tallying two goals and an assist in those games.

Toskala won two of those games, posting a 1.50 goals-against average. He's 6-1-1 with a 2.23 GAA in his last eight starts against Ottawa.

Washington Capitals (2-0-0) at Philadelphia Flyers (2-0-0), 7 p.m.

Washington Capitals (2-0-0) at Philadelphia Flyers (2-0-0), 7 p.m.

After winning their first two games of the season on the road, the Philadelphia Flyers will try to stay hot when they host the Washington Capitals in tonight's home opener at the Wachovia Center.

The Flyers began the season with Friday's shutout win at Carolina and then notched a victory the following night in New Jersey. It marks the first time Philadelphia has began a season 2-0 since posting three straight wins to kick off the 1998-99 campaign.

Washington is also unbeaten on the year, as it opened the season with a win in Boston last Thursday and then notched a victory over Toronto in Saturday's home opener at Verizon Center.

The Flyers' strong start has a great deal to do with goaltender Ray Emery, who recorded a shutout in the season opener against the Hurricanes and then stopped 24-of-26 shots in Saturday's 5-2 victory over the Devils. Emery was signed by the Flyers in the offseason after he spent the 2008-09 season playing professionally in Russia.

"That's what you hope for," Emery said of his team's first two outings. "You can't predict anything, but that's why you want to have a good camp to have a strong start, get started on the right foot. We're definitely happy winning two games in a row and having healthy bodies going back for our home opener."

Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Ian Laperriere and Darroll Powe tallied for Philadelphia in the win over the rival Devils. It was just the Flyers' second road victory over New Jersey since March 2004.

Matt Carle had a goal and one assist while rookie James vanRiemsdyk added two helpers for the Flyers.

The Flyers, who were 24-13-4 as the host last year, are beginning a three-game homestand tonight. They'll host Pittsburgh on Thursday before completing the residency Saturday against Anaheim.

Washington is coming off Saturday's 6-4 victory over the visiting Maple Leafs. Alexander Semin scored a pair of goals and dished out an assist, while Alex Ovechkin had a goal and two assists for the reigning Southeast Division champions.

Ovechkin has six points (3 goals, 3 assists) in his first two games of the season and was named the NHL's First Star for the opening week of the season.

Brendan Morrison and Brooks Laich had a goal and an assist apiece. Mike Knuble added a score for Washington, which got 27 saves from Semyon Varlamov in the win.

Knuble will be playing his first game against Philadelphia since he left the Flyers to sign a free-agent deal with Washington this summer. The 37-year-old Knuble spent the previous four seasons in Philly and recorded 114 goals in 310 games with the Flyers.

Washington's next contest is on Thursday when it welcomes the New York Rangers to the nation's capital. The Caps ousted New York in seven games during last spring's Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

The Flyers and Caps split four meetings last season, but Washington has taken eight of the last 12 encounters between the clubs. The Capitals have also come out on top in five of their last six stops in the City of Brotherly Love.

Led by newcomers Ray Emery and Chris Pronger, the Philadelphia Flyers' defense has been all but impenetrable through their first two games.

Another good performance in the team's home opener, however, could have much deeper meaning.

That's because the Flyers will be faced with the task of slowing down Alexander Ovechkin and the explosive Washington Capitals on Tuesday night at the Wachovia Center, as each fast-starting club tries to stay unbeaten.

Philadelphia (2-0-0) has reached the playoffs the last two seasons based largely on the merits of its offense, led by emerging stars Jeff Carter and Mike Richards, who've each scored a goal in each of the team's first two games.

But the club signed Emery and traded for Pronger in the offseason in order to strengthen its back end, and the moves haven't taken long to produce positive results.

Emery, a goaltender who led Ottawa to the Stanley Cup finals in 2007 before falling out of favor with the team and spending last season playing in Russia, has had a seamless transition back to the NHL. He blanked Carolina with 28 saves in a 2-0 win in his Flyers debut Friday, then stopped 26 shots the next night in a 5-2 win at New Jersey.

"He's been incredible," said rookie winger James Van Riemsdyk, the Flyers' leader with three points. "If he has had any doubters I think he's proved them all wrong now because of how incredible he has played. He made every save he should, and some saves he should not have made."

The presence of Pronger has certainly helped. The Flyers acquired the veteran defenseman and former Norris Trophy winner from Anaheim in a blockbuster trade in June, and he was a plus-three with two assists in Saturday's victory.

He'll likely share plenty of ice time with Ovechkin in just the third meeting between the two players. Ovechkin had a goal and three assists in the Capitals' 6-4 win over Pronger's Ducks on Nov. 19.

"Players like that, they want the puck, and you've got to do a good job of keeping the puck away from him and not allowing him easy opportunities and easy shots," Pronger told the Flyers' official Web site.

Washington's first two opponents haven't had much luck slowing down the two-time reigning Hart Trophy winner. Ovechkin has three goals and three assists in the victories, including the first goal in the team's 6-4 win over Toronto on Saturday.

He also assisted on newcomer Mike Knuble's power-play goal, Knuble's first tally with the team after signing with Washington this summer. Knuble didn't have to wait long for his first matchup with the Flyers after he totaled 221 points for Philadelphia over the last four seasons.

The Capitals (2-0-0) led the Maple Leafs 6-1 at the end of two periods, with Toronto coach Ron Wilson comparing the experience to being "in a piranha fish tank," but Washington had trouble closing out the victory.

"It was a great start, but we have to learn how to win 6-1 when we're in that position, not try to win 9-1. Hopefully it was a cheap lesson for us," Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said. "Our guys are bummed out because of it, because they want to take pride in their defense."

Boudreau wouldn't say who'll be in net for Washington on Tuesday. Semyon Varlamov beat Toronto after veteran Jose Theodore shut down Boston in a 4-1 victory in Thursday's season opener.

Theodore played in all four of the Capitals' games against Philadelphia last season, going 2-1 with a 1.95 goals-against average in his three starts. He gave up four goals in relief of Brent Johnson in the Flyers' 7-1 home win Dec. 20.

Philadelphia will be trying for its first 3-0 start in 11 years.

Tampa Bay Lightning (0-1-0) at Carolina Hurricanes (0-2-0), 7 p.m.

Tampa Bay Lightning (0-1-0) at Carolina Hurricanes (0-2-0), 7 p.m.

A pair of Southeast Division members seeking to turn around an undesired start to the 2009-10 season will face off this evening at Raleigh's RBC Center, where the Carolina Hurricanes return home to battle the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Hurricanes hope to rebound from Saturday's 7-2 shellacking by the Boston Bruins, the team Carolina upset in seven games last May to advance to the Eastern Conference finals, at TD Garden. That loss came on the heels of a 2-0 setback to Philadelphia in Carolina's home opener this past Thursday.

Boston jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead and converted 4-of-8 power-play opportunities on the night. Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward, making his second start since agreeing to a new six-year contract last week, stopped just 24- of-28 shots before being removed with 9:23 left in the second period. Carolina made good on just 1-of-10 chances with the man advantage in the lopsided loss.

"We were bad in pretty much every area we could be," said Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice.

Making matters worse for Carolina, the team learned that veteran forward Erik Cole will miss the next 4-to-6 weeks after sustaining a fracture in his lower left leg during the third period of Saturday's game. The eighth-year pro contributed 15 points (2 goals, 13 assists) in 17 games for the 'Canes after being re-acquired from Edmonton at the trade deadline back in March.

On a more positive note, the Hurricanes may get defenseman Joni Pitkanen back in the lineup for tonight's clash. The 26-year-old, who totaled seven goals and 26 assists and is a important part of the team's power play, sat out the first two games while recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery performed on September 10.

Tampa Bay was also routed its last time out, dropping a 6-3 decision at Atlanta in its 2009-10 debut on Saturday. The defeat was the 10th in a row dating back to last season for the Lightning, which finished 2008-09 next-to- last in the NHL with 66 total points.

The Lightning outshot the Thrashers by a 39-28 margin, but netminder Mike Smith managed to save only 22-of-28 chances.

"Disappointed, I was looking for a better start than that, obviously," said Smith afterward. "Tough one to swallow. But it's a long year, so (I'll) try and get over it quickly."

Martin St. Louis scored a pair of second-period goals to rally Tampa Bay back from a 4-0 deficit, and the Lightning pulled within one on Andrej Meszaros' tally 2:11 into the third period. However, Atlanta responded with goals from Rich Peverley and Ilya Kovalchuk over a span of 1:23 to thwart the comeback attempt.

The Hurricanes dominated the 2008-09 season series between these divisional foes, taking all six matchups. In addition, the Lightning have lost in each of their last six visits to the RBC Center and seven in a row overall against Carolina.

Considering the Tampa Bay Lightning were one of the NHL's worst defensive teams last season, it wasn't surprising that they struggled in their first game of 2009-10.

The Carolina Hurricanes' defensive issues in their road opener were much harder to see coming.

The Hurricanes try to bounce back from their worst defensive performance in more than a year Tuesday night when they look for an eighth consecutive win against the visiting Lightning.

Carolina (0-2-0) allowed the eighth-fewest goals in the league a year ago with goalie Cam Ward enjoying the best season of his career, but hasn't gotten off to a good start to 2009-10 on either end of the ice. The Hurricanes lost their home opener 2-0 to Philadelphia on Friday, then gave up 42 shots Saturday in a 7-2 loss at Boston.

Carolina hadn't allowed that many goals since a 7-1 defeat at Buffalo on March 14, 2008.

"We were bad in pretty much every area we could be,' coach Paul Maurice said.

To make matters worse, Carolina will be without one of its potential top scoring threats for at least a month. Erik Cole, who was reacquired from Edmonton in March after spending his first six seasons with the Hurricanes, fractured his leg in the loss to the Bruins.

That leaves star center Eric Staal without one of his linemates, but for the foreseeable future he'll be flanked by Sergei Samsonov and Tuomo Ruutu - his wingers last season until Carolina traded for Cole.

"I'm not worried," Staal told the Hurricanes' official Web site. "Obviously (Cole) is a good player and he brings a lot to the table, but I can still be successful whether he's on my wing or not. We'll obviously miss him when he's gone, but we'll be alright without him."

Staal shouldn't be too concerned about facing the Lightning (0-1-0) considering his team won all six meetings against their Southeast Division rivals last season. The former second overall draft pick was one of the biggest reasons why, scoring eight goals and assisting on three others, highlighted by his first career four-goal game in a 9-3 win at Tampa Bay on March 7.

Only Toronto, Atlanta and the New York Islanders allowed more goals than Tampa Bay did in 2008-09, and there didn't seem to be many signs of improvement in its first game of the new season.

The Lightning added defensemen Mattias Ohlund, Matt Walker and Kurtis Foster in the offseason in addition to No. 2 overall draft pick Victor Hedman, but couldn't seem to stop Atlanta on Saturday. Tampa Bay outshot the host Thrashers 39-28, but lost 6-3.

"Obviously, we were expecting a better result,' said winger Martin St. Louis, who had two goals on five shots. "We're not going to let this define our season. There's no need to panic.'

Hedman assisted on one of St. Louis' goals for his first career point.

St. Louis had two goals and an assist last season against the Hurricanes, while Vincent Lecavalier finished with three goals and two assists in the season series.

The Lightning have lost six straight games at Carolina, last winning in Raleigh on Nov. 8, 2007.
