Jeff Fisher announced his rough plan for game

Jeff Fisher announced his rough plan for game

First-round pick eases into practice with Titans

There will be no pot of gold at the end of the week for Titans rookie receiver Kenny Britt. He won?t play in the preseason opener against the Bills on Sunday night in Canton, Ohio.Friday was at least a start. The first-round pick practiced for the first time in training camp after being removed from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Britt?s hamstring injury is healed, though the Titans aren?t going to rush him.

?He did fine and he is right on schedule,?? Coach Jeff Fisher said. ?We will get him to keep conditioning and make sure he gets exercise and we?ll get him on the practice field next week.

?He just needs to continue on track. Right now he is on track. We are not concerned with him any more.??

Decked out in his No. 18, Britt looked the part of NFL player. But the speed of practice ? a walk-through sometimes stepped up to three-quarters speed ? hardly tested him. He ran a few routes in 1-on-1 drills, but barely broke a sweat. He dropped a few passes and had a false start.

?It was a little lighter out there. I was just trying to get a feeling,?? Britt said. ?Everybody told me to calm down and stop going full speed and things like that, but I just wanted to get the feel of it.??

He was the center of attention Friday and many more eyes will be on him if he?s able to play in the Aug. 15 game against the Buccaneers at LP Field.

?You want to be perfect every day but we know that is not reality,?? Britt said. ?You just want to be out there and catch every ball and make every route look perfect but it?s not going to happen. For me, I perform better when people are watching.??

Injuries: Receiver/return man Mark Jones (hamstring), defensive end Jacob Ford (hamstring), linebacker Colin Allred (ankle), linebacker Josh Stamer (soreness), linebacker Stephen Tulloch (rest) and tight end Alge Crumpler (rest) did not practice Friday. Fisher ruled out Allred, Ford and Britt for Sunday?s game. Jones isn?t expected to play.

Playing time: Fisher said the starters, including quarterback Kerry Collins, should play a few series in the first quarter against the Bills. As for the other quarterbacks: Vince Young will be next and play into the third quarter, followed by Patrick Ramsey. Alex Mortensen could get some mop-up duty.

Most will play Sunday

Most will play Sunday

(WGR 550) -- Dick Jauron said all healthy bodies will play in preseason game number one Sunday in Canton against Tennessee. He added he'd like to get all four quarterbacks in, "Everybody that is healthy will more than likely play in this game, so all of our starters will see a little bit of time. We think all of the quarterbacks will get playing time to some degree, a lot depends on how the game goes."

Ashton Youboty may not play as he didn't practice with a groin problem. Back up center Marvin Philip left the field with a knee injury which makes him questionable for the Titans. John McCargo and Spencer Johnson limped off the field late in practice, but both seem to be OK. Copeland Bryan and Marcus Smith sat out again and aren't likely to suit up.

Most teams around the NFL don't game plan for preseason games and the Bills are no different Dick Jauron said, "We're more concerned with giving our guys a chance to play, particularly the guys we don't know. We don't want to ask them to do so much that they're thinking about what they have to do instead of playing hard and freely, so we tend to stay fairly basic and just let them block and run and throw and catch and tackle a little bit."

Trent Edwards would like to play more than a few series, but likely won't. He has an approach to these games that he uses every season "It's just a matter of getting back into the football feel, going through the mechanics of going through a regular game, putting on their regular game jersey, going through the logistics of preparing for a regular game. We don't play a real game for over a month so this is a chance for this team to get back into the flow of football, getting back into the feel of eating your pregame meal. We're only going to be in for a couple of series and last year I wasn't really happy with the way I played in The Redskins game, but it was a good chance for me to get ready." Edwards is excited about the weekend. he said he's going to try to go to the ceremony on Saturday and check out Canton with his family.

Nic Harris was taken in the 5th round this past April. He played safety at Oklahoma, but is challenging Keith Ellison for a starting spot at linebacker. Harris can't wait for Sunday to try to hit somebody on the other side of the ball, "It's going to be great to go out there on a night game and strap it up and see what my feel is. see what it is exactly that I need work on and see what I'm proficient at." Being a safety Harris was always the last line of defense. Now, he has people around him. He said, "The biggest thing I've learned is learning how to play with guys behind me. I was always the last guy and had to make the tackle. Now I'm learning to rely on the guys around me and make sure I take care of my responsibility." Lee Evans said a few weeks ago he hates having an extra week of training camp. For Harris, it's different, "I think it will be beneficial to myself. I hadn't played this position and i need that extra work to learn different keys, playing off blocks and learning QB keys."

The team will have a closed walk through Saturday before leaving for Cleveland where they'll stay waiting for Sunday night's game in Canton.

HEAD COACH DICK JAURON

Training Camp PM Practice - Buffalo Bills

Opening Statement

So, it was our last padded practice before we get to the Hall of Fame
game. We're really excited about the game. Had a couple of guys,
unfortunately, get dinged in practice. We just have to see their
condition when we get inside and Bud (Carpenter) has a chance to check
them. It's always the risk, but you've got to practice and they practice
hard. So sometimes things happen. Still haven't made any final decision
about playing time for everybody, but everybody that's healthy will more
than likely play in this game. So all of our starters will see a little
bit of time, you know, and then we'll work form there. We think all of
the quarterbacks will get playing time, to some degree. A lot depends on
how the game goes. But that's our plan, anyway, going in.

On Spencer Johnson's status and if his injury is not severe

I'm certainly hoping so. He said he felt OK at the end - just a little
bit sore. So we're hoping.

On John McCargo's injury

He got kicked in the calf. So we'll just have to see what happens as
time passes.

On Marvin Philip's injury

It was a knee and don't know about it yet.

On if there is a team to beat in the AFC East and on Rex Ryan's comments
in the media

Well, I don't really have any thoughts on that. I have no idea what he
said, nor do I know that I'd have any response to it anyway. Yeah, I
think every team, for us, is a team to beat. I mean, clearly, we didn't
do well in the division last year. We didn't beat anybody. So we're
looking at all of them and we think they're all outstanding football
teams. They're all well coached, you know, and they've got talent. So
we've got a long ways to go. We're working hard and we're excited about
it. We love being part of this division, you know. It's historical. The
rivalries are long. You know, they're good. Everybody wants to beat
everybody else. So it'll be fun. It should be a lot of fun and it's
going to be very, very difficult.

On Ashton Youboty's injury

Ashton's injury, I believe, was his groin. You know, it kind of crept
up. He was OK after practice yesterday, and then he said he just got
stiff in the morning. So we'll see what happens there.

On if there is an ideal number of snaps that starters should get

No, not really. We'll just have to see what happens. You just don't know
what's going to happen. If you said two series, you have no idea, you
know. And if you said snaps, it's really hard to determine too because
the game could start getting away from you and you want to look at
everybody. For the most part, we kind of know those guys. And if the
game starts getting away, we want to see a lot of a lot of other people.

On if the Titans' physical style of play helps the team prepare for the
season better

I would say yeah, but I don't really know any team in the league that
you'd play that you didn't feel like you were going to be challenged.
You know, everybody's really good. Tennessee's got a really fine team
and a really talented team. A fast team. So, yeah, it'll be a really
great challenge for us.

On if it is difficult to get a gauge on what's happening in preseason
games

Not necessarily, only because we're more concerned with giving our guys
a chance to play - particularly the people we don't know or are just
trying to learn about. So we don't want to ask them to do so much that
they're thinking about what they have to do instead of playing hard and
freely. So we tend to stay fairly basic and just let them block and run
and throw and catch and tackle. It's pretty basic, generally. Saying
that, you know, football has changed so much. So basic football today,
basic defensive football, really different than it used to be. Because
pressure is so much a part of everybody's plan and scheme, you tend to
see lots and lots of pressures. Twenty years ago or 25 years ago,
particularly early in the preseason games, I wouldn't see any. Both
sides would be pretty basic and let their young guys play. You know,
just to see what you have. A little bit different but that's kind of
what we try to do within the parameters of modern football.

On Steve Johnson's chances of playing on Sunday

I didn't think it would happen, but he has...I guess you come to expect
it of him, although he's so young. But he just kind of plays, you know.
He goes out and makes plays. He's a tough guy. So we'll see, you know.
We'll see how he feels. But I wouldn't rule it out, but I wouldn't say
yes either, at this point.

On Trent Edwards' comment saying he was frustrated with questions about
Terrell Owens and if other players may feel the same way

I don't know. I don't know the answer to that question. Clearly, if you
ask Trent a question he's going to tell you what he thinks. You know,
he's really a guy we all believe in. But, I don't know that it has any
meaning, quite frankly. You know, we're practicing and you all are
asking the questions. So you're asking him all the questions about
Terrell. He certainly doesn't have to answer them, and I don't really
have anything more to say about that.

On the significance of Hall of Fame weekend for the Bills

It's been so exciting ever since it was announced. And for Mr. Wilson, I
think it's just so deserved. A guy that loves the game, is loyal to the
game, has been so loyal to us and this area. A founding father of the
AFL. The 50th Anniversary of the American Football League. It'll be a
terrific day for us. And then Bruce (Smith) going in at the same time
has to make Mr. Wilson feel so proud, too. Just really excited about the
whole opportunity to be involved in it.

WIDE RECEIVER TERRELL OWENS COMMENTS

Training Camp PM Practice - August 7, 2009

On if he is ready for the first dress rehearsal:

Well yeah, I mean, it's no different than anywhere else that I've been.
Camp is camp and you always kind of look forward to kicking the season
off and knock the rust off, get the dust off a little bit as far as
getting snaps and reps a little bit so depending on how many reps the
coach wants the starters to go, then we'll go accordingly.

On if there is a different feeling with it being national television and
a Hall of Fame game:

No, I've done all of that before.

On the expectations for the offense during the Hall of Fame game:

Well no man, we're just trying to approach the game just like any other
game, get some things accomplished, get a feel for where we are, what we
need to do, what we need to do better, so we'll get a sense of that once
the game begins and as the game progresses. We'll come back here on
Monday or Tuesday, whenever that is and look at the film and I think
everybody will use this as time to assess where they are in their
abilities and what the team is capable of.

On if he will get enough snaps to make a legitimate assessment:

Probably not (laughing). I mean, that's why not only myself but guys
work so hard in practice. I know for myself I try to treat each practice
and use it as a time to get better, a time to prepare myself for the
opening game. I know there's a lot of hype and it will be a lot of hype
as the first season game approaches, and that's where my mind is.

On if he will go to the induction ceremonies:

I'm not sure; I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet.

On if he has toured the Hall of Fame:

Nope.

On if he has a desire to tour the Hall of Fame:

I guess so. My little cousin is playing receiver for the Pittsburgh
Steelers, and they got a chance to get some of the rookies to go up
there and he called me, he was very moved by the fact that he saw my
jersey in the Hall of Fame, so for me it's just a blessing - it's a
blessing just to be in there and have accomplished a feat worthy of
being in there. He was definitely excited about visiting the Hall of
Fame and actually seeing a family member's jersey in there.

On if he is curious about seeing his own jersey in the Hall of Fame:

No, not at all. I've never been curious. I think a lot of people
speculate as far as what my feelings are with the Hall of Fame, you
know; will I go in, when, and all that stuff, but I don't really think
about that.

On who his cousin is and if he is any good:

Steven Black. Yeah, he's in my bloodlines, so I'm pretty sure
(laughing).

On the Antonio Cromartie twitter complaint and fine:

I did read something about it, I think it's ridiculous. You know you're
going to get my honest opinion about it and for someone to get fined
$2500 dollars because he tweeted that the cafeteria food is bad, then
maybe they need to change it, you know? (laughing). I mean, that's just
his opinion, and I feel him. I think across the board with a lot of
teams we've been in camp situation and the food always kind of starts
off good and tapers off somewhere along the way, so what's wrong with
that? Voicing your opinion is no different than saying practice is too
hard.

Trust me, this is the best cafeteria and food selection that I've ever
been around. It's been great here and I'm not feeding you a line
(laughing). It's been pretty good.

On comparing how welcoming his teammates have been this camp as opposed
to other teams:

I mean, it's been the same, you know. As anyone tells you, I always
start good, you know what I mean? Every training camp is different,
coaching style, practice style, but overall camp is camp and it's a lot
of hard work that goes into it. There's no way around it - I've never
been to an easy camp.

On saying "it always starts good" and if that means in the back of his
head that he is thinking it could go bad:

Well you know, I'm just making a joke off the fact that people always
say that with me everything always starts rosy and then somewhere it
kind of falls off and I throw my quarterback under the bus, something
like that.

Bills set to unveil Owens, new O-line
Buffalo takes on Titans in preseason opener

August 09, 2009

Terrell Owens said Sunday night's Hall of Fame game is just another contest. Easy for him to say.

Actually, the Buffalo Bills preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans at Fawcett Stadium (8 p.m., Ch. 2) is one of the most anticipated the Bills have played in a long time.

Fans are eagerly waiting to see Owens' first game in a Bills uniform and what he might bring to a new and possibly improved offense. They are looking forward to watching a retooled offensive line ? minus one starter (injured right tackle Brad Butler) ? that includes a pair of highly drafted rookies.

There's also the fact that tonight caps a Bills-dominated weekend as team owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr. and legendary defensive end Bruce Smith were enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday. This also marks the beginning of the NFL's season-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the AFL.

Just another preseason game? Not so, T.O.

"I think if you look at our first preseason game last year versus this year, they are entirely different," quarterback Trent Edwards said. "We have some new players in here, we are on a national stage, we are the only people playing and we have our owner and a great defensive end going into the Hall of Fame that played for the Bills. I think guys will be ready. I think guys will be a little more anxious and excited about it. I know I will be."

Head coach Dick Jauron said the starters will get at least a couple of series, but added their playing time will depend on how the game goes.

Just as important to Jauron is seeing how the candidates will back up those starters in the regular season.

"For the most part, we kind of know those guys [starters]," he said. "You want to see a lot of other people."

But the majority of people in Buffalo will be tuning in to see the debut of Owens and the offense. The Bills signed Owens in hopes that he can help ignite an offense that has ranked in the bottom eight in the NFL the last six seasons. He has been a consistent target of Edwards during training camp and looks like he could be the ideal complement to fellow wideout Lee Evans.

"We're just trying to approach the game just like any other game, and try to get some things accomplished, get a feel for where we are, what we need to do, what we need to do better," Owens said. "We'll get a sense of that once the game begins and as the game progresses, then we'll come back [to camp] on Monday or Tuesday and look at the film. I think everybody will use this time to assess where they are, their abilities and what this team is capable of."

Up front, this will be the first game for an offensive line that has five players at new positions. Butler won't play because of a back injury but rookie guards Eric Wood and Andy Levitre are expected to stay on the field once the other starters leave.

Also, look for the Bills to unveil their no-huddle offense tonight. The Bills say the no-huddle is just one aspect of the attack, but considering the offense hasn't called a play from a huddle this summer one would have to assume the team will continue to work on it tonight.

Despite all the offense's potential, Jauron doesn't expect instant success.

"I'm very excited about seeing it. I'm also realistic," he said. "Things do not happen overnight the first time in a game situation that we'll see this group together. The line is brand new. Everybody has moved and it takes time. We've had all the [organized team activities], we've had a lot of work and we've had our training camp. But it's different [in games]. Hopefully it will go well and we'll take another step."

For Tennessee, the starters will likely go no more than two series. Kerry Collins will get the start at quarterback, while much-maligned backup Vince Young might play into the third quarter. The Titans' first-round draft pick, wide receiver Kenny Britt, and Pro Bowl center Kevin Mawae won't play.

"We're going to face them, obviously in the regular season, so it will be a good test to kind of see where our offense is at, our defense is at and our special teams are at," Edwards said. "I felt like we've had a really good camp so far and I think to top that off we should be ready to go Sunday night."
