You were a big help in the HDTV thread so hopefully you know about this DVR thing as well. When I set it to record something and then try to change the channel it says it will stop recording if the channel is changed, WTF is that about? Can I really not watch one thing and record another? Am I doing something wrong, if not this thing is going off somones head at the cable place on my way home from work tomorrow, I mean how generic is that?

Any advice?

don't try to watch tv on your dvr, they are made to record and watch recordings, the worse thing you can do is try and record something and watch it live on the dvr.

Flip back over to your hdtv box and watch it on there so you can change the channels. I have a replay and I don't ever watch tv on my dvr.

With our DVR we can watch 1 thing and record another...only time it does what it did to you is when we are recording two things. Then we must watch one of them or cancel. If your DVR doesn't let you watch another channel that is a sham.

Exactly, I just got back from the cable office and they say it is a problem with the TV guide channel they use to send recording info to the DVR. Makes sense to me since everything I see calims it can do everything I want and then some. Cable rep said they would have it woriking correctly in about a month. fair enough considering it's only $1 a month, we'll see if that stays the same when it's working properly or if they jack that price up on us.

Thanks again guys.

bsucards-

Thanks for the link to the HDTV forum. It has a ton of information (and complaining) about the Motorola 6412 which Comcast is cuurently installing. I had this installed last week and so far am far from impressed. Common complaints on the board are same as mine, loud whirring sound, sudden shut-downs and reboots, channel freezes, inability of the guide to determine "First Runs" so it records repeats of shows that are on other stations (CSI for example). Also, the remote control that I got was not the right one. It did not have the swap button. After reading the directions, they kept referring to the swap button, which I did not have. I called Comcast and the person I got laughed and then told me how to program the remote to allow me the swap feature. Why was it delivered like this in the first place? Why didn't the installer tell me about this?

On another note, I found it kind of strange that Comcast sent someone out to the house two days later to get a report on how the installer did. I was not home at the time of the installation and the follow-up visit but my wife called me at work to speak with the follow-up rep. I told him about the remote problem and some other issues and he thanked me for the information and that was it. Why not send me a new remote?

glad your enjoying the HDTV recorders forum. I don't have hdtv yet, but probably will in the next year. I don't think I like these cable companies dvr's since I have a stand alone dvr now. Replay doesn't look like they want to put anything out there in a mid to low price for an hd dvr so I will probably end up with a HD tivo next year
