You can get the CO2 tanks filled at any welding supply store as well. Shell out the extra bucks for a second tank. You don't want to run out of CO2, trust me. Nothing is more fun than having to drain a flat keg with a fresh CO2 tank.
Before I moved, I had a converted refrigerator and it was awesome. I went with 1/4 barrels vs 1/2 barrels because I could always keep a spare underneath the 1/4 barrel in use. It was a tight fit, and it is slightly more expensive over the long haul, but it was worth it to never run out. Nothing worse than an empty kegerator. This is probably the best argument for the conversion kit. It is easy to install, but you HAVE to build a sturdy platform at the bottom. I used a piece of sheet metal and a wood support beam.
As for cleaning the tubes.....ummmm, I did it twice in 5 years. I'm walking and talking, so I guess it didn't hurt me.
